SONYAE|Early BeginningsSonyae Martha Maraj was born in Saint James, a suburb of Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago on December 8th, 1988 to parents Carol Maraj (mother) and Vincent Maraj. She is mixed of Indian and African-Trinidadian ancestry and has two siblings. As an toddler, Maraj and her two other siblings resided with their parents and grandmother in Saint James - all sharing a medium-sized house. Her family would often struggled to make ends meet every now and then. When Sonyae was of the age of 4, her parents moved to Brooklyn, a borough in New York, in order to make a better living and to start fresh. They left young Sonyae and her siblings to live with her grandmother until they were financially stable enough for them to have Sonyae and her siblings to live with them in New York. When Sonyae was soon to reach the age of 6, her parents brought both her and her siblings to live with them in New York.
When Sonyae moved to the United States with her parents, she adjusted to the new life and the different environment quickly. Shortly after, she began to attend PS 152 - an elementary school in the borough of Brooklyn.. While enrolling in an elementary school, Sonyae's parents had an abusive relationship towards one another. Her father would often abuse Sonyae's mother whenever he became intoxicated. Soon after, he became an alcoholic. In hopes of nurturing Sonyae in a better environment, her mother Carol moved to Queens, another borough in New York, taking Sonyae with her. There, she enrolled in another public elementary school before graduating and enrolling in a middle school where she learned to play various instruments such as the clarinet and the flute. After graduating from middle school and advancing onto high school, Sonyae enrolled in LaGuardia High School - a high school that's mostly known for it specialization in music and the visual and performing arts. Sonyae enrolled in the school and excelled in her classes. At the time, she wanted to become an actress and a novelist. She enjoyed arts and literature and ancient Greek mythology. She graduated from LaGuardia High School after enrolling for 4 years.After Sonyae graduated high school and a fail attempt at launching her acting career, she began to work as a babysitter and soon after - a waitress and Applebees in Downtown Brooklyn.

Sonyae signed to indie label 'Dirty Records' in 2008, in high hopes of launching a rapping career. By then, she already had a new mindset in having a career in music. She started to record mix-tapes and would sell them in various locations throughout the different boroughs in New York City. Shortly after, Sonyae made a name for herself in the underground rap scene and in 2009, she appeared on a popular street DVD known as 'Dirty Records Comeup DVD'. Sonyae continued to release more mix-tapes over the years and started performing at different clubs and tiny venues throughout New York City.
Sonyae's main influences consists of artists such as Lauryn Hill, the Fugees, Foxy Brown, Jay-Z, Madonna, and Missy Kim.
In late 2011, Sonyae decided to leave 'Dirty Records' after both her career and the indie label failed to take off and described this decision as only "business and nothing personal". Til this day, Sonyae and her former label CEO remain close friends. In early 2012, she began to perform at different venues within New York City once more and recorded more mix-tapes and released them independently. She began to become popular in her local area and as time flew by, her revenue and mix-tape sales began to slowly increase. She would often shoot videos that were funded by an indie production company and would upload them onto Youtube. She soon became popular on Youtube, generating over 3 million views of her videos on average and local radio stations would occasionally air some of her songs off of her mix-tapes. SONYAE|Debut Studio Album-PresentIn 2012, Sonyae began working with famous producer and also co-owner of Tric-Jam Records Layla Raine on her debut studio album. In November of that same year, she released a promotional single titled 'Taste of Perfection' while she was still working on her debut album. The single reached the top 20 on the Digital Downloads Chart and became an urban hit, despite only being released for promotional purposes. Since then, Sonyae has been recording in the studio working on her debut studio album which is slated to be released soon, according to Sonyae's manager SaFari.
