2. "Living in Fairy Tales"
Released: November 25, 2013

Background and recording

In August 2013, Traveling Tales was announced after little known about the album, opting for a soft release, with the first single "Going Down to the River" released on digital outlets and to radio a few weeks later. Hernandez has called the album having a "Sunday morning vibe", hinting many people to believe that the record will likely feature a gentle, acoustic-driven sound, although the singer himself has stated that it includes a complement of both acoustic and electric guitars.

The new album was mainly recorded at The Village in Los Angeles, California, where Ryan Ross Hernandez purchased one of the studios for his personal use, with additional recording, mixing, and mastering of Traveling Tales taking place at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood, California, and Electric Lady Studies in New York City, New York. Despite having built a recording studio soon-after the release of Break in the Clouds, in his Bozeman, Montana home, it was not used for the recording process of his new album.

Traveling Tales is the singer-songwriter's first album following his second throat surgery that was done in August 2012, leading him to remain silent for months after a dose of botox surgeries that froze his vocal chords. The botox treatment that helped in terminating the granuloma growth on his vocal chords was still wearing off during the recording of the album, leading to a huskier tone, opting for melodies that allowed for his controlled singing approach.

Hernandez has mentioned that Traveling Tales is the "natural progression" from his previous album, Break in the Clouds, following in the musical direction of incorporating a sound built around popular Americana music of the 1960s and 1970s. The sound on Traveling Tales leads to a more set direction to toward a rotation of acoustic and electric guitars, featuring more musical breaks and instrumentals, invoking less harmonica than his previous album. Furthermore, he has stated: "I had no plans to step back into the studio a year after Break in the Clouds was released, but as a musician I knew I couldn't sit on these songs an entire album cycle. Once I got together with a group of musicians, many of which are currently on the touring band, it was time to get into the studio and create this album." In a rarity for the singer-songwriter, he opened the door to write and collaborate with a rap verse from hip-hop sensation Matt "Matty" Young, featured on "The River." The famed guitarist also steps away from his talents behind said instrument, when he plays behind the piano on another song off of Traveling Tales.

Promotion

The main promotion towards Traveling Tales has previously been stated as being the World Tour that Ryan Ross Hernandez is currently embarked on. A new string of Fall dates are expected to be released around the album's release date, in addition to more international dates on a later date for 2014.

Honor: You were one step away from naming your song 'Mary Jane' and being a cliche. But I'm interested in hearing this, especially you and Serenity's song ;)

Ryan: I do know a girl named Mary Jane though, so it wouldn't have been that far from a cliche if I had called it that. She visits every once in a while and we visit forests together. She's a very good friend of mine. Yeah, I do imagine the duet with Serenity Scott will surely throw some people off, but that's not a bad thing. She knows Mary Jane too. We all should know Mary Jane and climb trees.

Ryan Ross Hernandez 'Traveling Tales' Review | Album Review | Rolling Stone

Ryan Ross Hernandez
Traveling Tales
North Hill

Rolling Stone Rating: 3 in a half out of 5 stars
By John Harris
October 18, 2013

Ryan Ross Hernandez is one of the most polarizing figures in the music industry. Whether you love him or hate him, it seems that everyone has an opinion on the just turned 36 year old musician. In more recent memory, Hernandez has grown up in keeping to himself and as a recording artist. Traveling Tales continues his autobiographical journey, where these days it's the only place to find just what is going through Hernandez's head.

Traveling Tales seems to be the next chapter in him as both a man and musician. This time finding him in a relaxed, hopeful frame of mind, with the music complementing that. With two throat surgeries behind him, his voice coming back to shape, and his time as a bad boy, tabloid fixture coming to an end.

This release comes 16-months later after last year's Break in the Clouds, where Hernandez keeps most of the same musicians who helped craft the previous, acclaimed album. Hernandez and company follow in the same footsteps, going deeper into American roots music of yesteryear. Many southern rock, folk, and country influential sounds found throughout the forty-five minute ride.

The charming opener "Going Down to the River" provides a getaway into the simplistic approach the singer-songwriter has taken in composing this record. The first single taking from Traveling Tales is a fun, breezy track that features bluesy guitar lines and a foot stomping, hand clapping chorus that is sure to be a fan favorite live. The highlights here are when Hernandez keeps the laid-back licks and strums, with lyrics that complement both his talent as a guitarist and sensitivity as a songwriter.

His widely known love life that features many equally, or even more famous ex-girlfriends come to focus a few times here. "A Song in My Heart" features his presumed latest girlfriend, pop singer Serenity Scott. It's a full-on love duet that will be sure to gets divided opinions on. While it's charming enough, having the aww-factor makes it a bit too soapy for some. Despite that, it's almost certain to be a single somewhere down the line. "Living in Fairy Tales" and "Our Storybook Ending" both have enough hints that could be pin-pointed as responses to his ex Nadia Berry, whom he has kept mum about. "You're the type of girl that lives in fairy tales in her head / You may live like a princess but there's no prince charming waiting by your door," he sings, providing just enough wit for it to be pleasing enough.

The other guest on the album, rapper Matty, drops a good verse on "The River." The problem with the song is that it does little to enhance the record in a positive or negative way, serving more as a strangely placed interlude with its just over two-minute run-time. On the tail end of this record is where Hernandez seems to reach the full sonic sound he was aiming for in the previous nine tracks. "Welcome to Adult Reality" serves as a near ode to country legend Marty Robbins, the closes Hernandez has touched the genre. "Where I Belong Is Where I'm Going" references getting back on the road (the singer currently in the middle of his first worldwide tour in three years), while looking back to say his goodbye to past troubles. "I bought a gun, I don't know why / I don't let my mind visit those dark hallways inside it anymore" acting as one of the most honest and resounding lyrical highlights found here.

Hernandez created another warm, pleasant record and we should all take it as that. The singer-songwriter/guitarist continues his traveling tales with a self-aware outlook on the past, but an even brighter, hopeful road ahead of him.

1. Going Down to the River

Lyrics

We're going down to the river
Where the moon meets the water
While the seasons a-changin'
The summer sun is settling, find your lightweight coat for the Fall
Let's start a bonfire to keep us all warm
We'll invite all our friends
I'll grab my guitar, we'll sing a tune we all know
So strap on your dancing boots, I'll wear my golden hat
This is the kind of night that the Western winds brings you

You got your pretty hair down, down
In your favorite party dress
I can watch your beauty and raven hair run wild with the breeze by the river

Won't you sing, sing, sing, like this is a familiar song?
Everyone going down to the river, gonna lose yourself tonight
I'll trade my day to feel this free by the river every night

There's no need to bring your worries here
Loneliness has lost its beauty
A Christian girl filled that vacancy, she the only beauty I need
Now she and I dance to old time records, no more Blue
You can fall asleep on my chest and listen to the music in my heart
If you want, just pack a suitcase, it's all you'll need
'Cause this is the kind of night you only hear about by the Yellowstone

You got your pretty hair down, down
In your favorite party dress
I can watch your beauty and raven hair run wild with the breeze by the river

Won't you sing, sing, sing, like this is a familiar song?
Everyone going down to the river, gonna lose yourself tonight
I'll trade my day to feel this free by the river every night

You got my soul singin' a different tune in another key
A song is all you need to keep your love where the light is
Where the moon meets the water
You'll finally learn
I love you further than the map can go
Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah

Won't you sing, sing, sing, like this is a familiar song?
Everyone going down to the river, gonna lose yourself tonight
I'll trade my day to feel this free by the river every night

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"Going Down to the River opens up the album and rightfully so. I think it earned that title for the vibe it leads the listener into. Usually there is some grand meaning behind the songs I right, but this one is just a fun track. To me it's an ear-pleaser as soon as I hear those opening chords. There's such a Summer vibe in that. I thought it was a cool idea to release a Summer sounding song in the Fall. It made sense to me because I feel in September and October, people are still shedding Summer skin, there's some longing for that feeling you're leaving behind. "The summer sun is settling, find your lightweight coat for the Fall," the lyric sums up both the lyrical content and general feel for the song. It's leaving a season behind and welcoming the next. I didn't want to overthink myself with the lyrics, I just went for vibe the music gave me. I wrote the lyrics around the melody I already had recorded. I guess they turned out in a imagery driven path. I've found with Traveling Tales and Break in the Clouds that there's nothing wrong with writing simple lyrics, there's a beauty to them. There's a reference in there to the Yellowstone River which is the river I think about in my head when I sing it. The Yellowstone actually runs through my backyard in Montana. There's a fun fact for you all. From a musician standpoint, I just love playing the song. I love the feel I get when I'm playing on stage. Sometimes that's all you need, people."

2. Staying Love

Genre: Americana, folk rock
Length: 3:59

Sounds Like:

Lyrics

It was a September night in the city you're from
I took a couple shots and I knew it was wrong
When I reached for the phone, calling you just to hear your voice
I wished for the whiskey to take me anywhere else
But there are signs in your blue eyes like a constellation at sea
Connecting each star to find where our paths shall meet
I'll say it once in a moment of clarity
But I'd rather just show you what that phrase means to me

Staying love
Staying love
I want a love that stays with me
A staying love
A love I can carry in my heart wherever I go
Say you'll catch the longest flight just to spend a day
A day to get lost from everyone we know
Say you'll stay, love
My staying love

It was the coldest night this Winter had seen yet
We couldn't just run off to escape the world
Everyone was still around us
But your eyes read like a book cover to cover
You wanted me but without the weight of my past
I could make you a promise in every tongue
But my mind still drifts off to think what might happen if I had met you at another time
Hell, you might have been the greatest love to be mine
And I might have grown old with you
Yeah, that's a pretty dream
But you won't be the last and only to love me
And I wasn't the first to love you

Staying love
Staying love
I want a love that stays with me
A staying love
A love I can carry in my heart wherever I go
Say you'll catch the longest flight just to spend a day
A day to get lost from everyone we know
Say you'll stay, love
My staying love

Staying love (with you)
Staying love (with you)
Staying love (with you)

When all you want is uncomplicated, you got me all wrong
I just want a staying love, someone that can fill the gap between my teeth
One day you'll come to figure out why I cannot stay
When all I want is a love that never leaves my heart

Staying love
Staying love
I want a love that stays with me
A staying love
A love I can carry in my heart wherever I go
Say you'll catch the longest flight just to spend a day
A day to get lost from everyone we know
Say you'll stay, love
My staying love

Ooooh
Ooooh
Ooooh
[til fade]

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"I had a conversation with a friend over drinks, we were talking about life and relationships. I remember saying 'I want a love that stays with me, a staying love.' That kind of made the songwriter part of my head spark and get the idea for this song. It's about fleeing love, but pleading for it to stay. It's a song that has a beginning, middle, and end, which I really like. The first verse paints the picture for you, the chorus is the plot, and the second verse kind of gives you the answer to the first verse, the bridge is almost the fade out. It's not about having a person you love physically with you at all times, but more of a staying love in your heart. You always want to feel in your heart that love you receive from another human being. When that feeling is lost, it's over."

Lyrics

I wanna build my perfect life in a house within a picket fence
Where we can spend the rest of our lives making memories
And when the days get rough, you can go for a swim, while I play my guitar

When you see yourself in a perfect scenery with me, baby
When the love I give is returned to me in equal proportions
When you stand by me when the rest of the world gives me its back
When you move all your things into my place and decide to build a home with me

I'm at a standstill
Between knowing what I need
But never home enough to build anything more than distance with phone calls
Maybe I'll finally stop questioning everyone's intentions
Now that I notice myself growing older each day

I'm at a standstill
Between my own blinding pride
And your lovely voice telling me
"I don't care who everyone thinks you are, you're the feeling I just can't let go of."

When you see yourself in a perfect scenery with me
When the love I give is returned to me in equal proportions
When you stand by me when the world gives me its back
When you move all your things into my place and decide to build a home with me

Don't love me if you don't wanna
Don't love me if you don't wanna love me everyday

I'm at a standstill
When this love is inked into our hearts and can't be erased
When we're both in our fifties, the kids have left home

Can you tough it out, baby?
Can you put up with me on my off days?
Will you still love me when we get into tiny arguments that make us wanna sleep in separate rooms?
Will you hold my hand and love me a little more today if I asked you to?
I'm at a standstill for today

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"When you're single after a while and going out, just talking with women, you are treated like garbage a lot. I was treated garbage by a lot of women who don't know me on a personal level but just say, 'oh no, you're that guy.' As if there's a certain way talking with me has to happen. You know, I know nothing I can say is going to change your mind, so just do it and move on. It was turning a negative into a positive by way of going home after one of those nights and writing this song. It's kind of the twisted logic of writing about someone you haven't meant, yet having enough hopefulness that she's coming your way, you just have to cross paths. It's telling your future wife, 'it's not gonna be easy, but hopefully when you step back and look at what we've built together, it outweighs both our flaws.' I have 'home life' tattooed on my arm because I want to find that median where I can be both a musician and have a home life and family of my own. I want to lay down my own stones in life and cement myself as a human being. Personally for me, I think it's one of the best songs I've written. It has a very peaceful vibe to it, even the solo in the middle of the song has that shimmering, warm sound to it. A few years ag I would have never allowed myself to write a song where I long to be older, because for a long time I use to fear growing older, I only knew how to be and act young. But now that I'm more into my thirties, mid-to-late thirties, I am much more comfortable with my age and the fact that, yeah, I'm going to be forty in four years. Bring it on."

Lyrics

Oh Mary Ann, I see those times you shut down on me
We're both hard-headed, neither willing to compromise
I know I'm not the only one who sees this building collapsing
Just stop trying to hold the walls up around us and let the storm do its worse

Oh Mary Ann, I forget my troubles when you hold me closer
I don't think prayers work, but I find myself praying for something more
I know we both see this wasted breath
Just stop trying to love us for the both of us and let this love fade away

Blame me, I know it's my fault if I call this over
Blame my heart that always bails right before the good part
My love is like quicksand, it'll catch you and pull you in, make it harder to move on
But once I let you go, I'm just a vessel lost at sea
Waiting for the next island that'll let me wash up to its shore

Oh Mary Ann
That day was suppose to start the rest of your life
You went to Europe and flew in all your friends and family
On such a blessed day, I shouldn't feel this heartache
Just stop trying to have a perfect day and call this day a bust

Oh Mary Ann, I'm sorry for the tears I cause you
Your friends were right, just in-delay
Now wouldn't you wanna runaway and throw these infinite rings into the ocean?
Just stop trying to make believe a ring means anything more than a piece of jewelry

Blame me, I know it's my fault if I call this over
Blame my heart that always bails right before the good part
My love is like quicksand, it'll catch you and pull you in, make it harder to move on
But once I let you go, I'm just a vessel lost at sea
Waiting for the next island I'll meet

My heart, it always bails right before the good part
Our love could last the rest of our lives
But what is the point, if we'll still be seeking more?
They say time has a way of making these things feel less painful
Find something new to believe in
Something new
Something new
Something new
Something new
Something new
Something new
Something new
A faith that will not fail you

And now I sleep less than I use to
Watch our dreams burn up in the fireplace
The roots are cemented in the ground
My heart is still a believer, so nullify my plea
This love is yours, so keep it

And now I sleep less than I use to
Watch our dreams burn up in the fireplace
The roots are cemented in the ground
My heart is still a believer, so nullify my plea
This love is yours, so keep it

And now I sleep less than I use to
Watch our dreams burn up in the fireplace
The roots are cemented in the ground
My heart is still a believer, so nullify my plea
This love is yours, so keep it

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"I just need to get out of the way before I get asked in the future, that no, Mary Ann is not an actual person. It's a fictional story I thought up in my head about a couple on their wedding day, where everything is supposedly picture perfect, but when you go inside their minds, they have some serious fears. It's from the point of view of the man, who isn't having a case of cold feet, he seriously is just seeing all the reasons why this doesn't feel right, the feeling of more out there. There's a lyric in the bridge, 'Our love could last the rest of our lives / But what is the point if we'll still be seeking more?", which describes it perfectly. You have just enough love to make it last forever, but you'll constantly be seeking more to try to feel fulfilled. That's where the latter of the part confuses because he's nullifying his plea and saying 'This love is yours, so keep it,' it sounds like he's faking it at that point. Or maybe the first part was just a dream that didn't actually happen. I enjoy songs that confuse to an extent, I like writing stories within a song that only I know the true meaning behind, but the listeners can still take it and make these songs their own. That's really how I enjoy to take my music. I don't need the author's exact meaning behind their work, I rather build my own thoughts and ideas."

Lyrics

Darling you should try a different city with me
Just pack up your pretty dresses and high heel shoes
I'll watch you dance around the backyard in your favorite cocktail dress
It sure was cloudy when we moved
But your smile brightened the day

We'd put up decorations to fill the emptiness that comes with winter's cold
We never spend much time there any more
It's becoming a hiding place when one of us need the space
My love hangs on little strings of hopefulness
Your love always unbalances the beam

You're the type of girl that lives in fairytales in her mind
You may live like a princess but there's no prince charming waiting by your door
It blinds you from seeing the real love in front of you
Honey baby, you should be an actress and live out your little girl dreams on the screen
You're just made of porcelain
If you fall you'll break in half

Roam the world and purchase the most lovely clothing your eyes have seen
And try on that beautiful ball gown for the gala
Romanticize the idea of when you meet the love of your life
You might as well hold an audition to find your soulmate
Every outing feels like a test to see if I'm the one
And I miss the simple dates

You're the type of girl that lives in fairytales in her mind
You may live like a princess but there's no prince charming waiting by your door
It blinds you from seeing the real love in front of you
Honey baby, you should be an actress and live out your little girl dreams on the screen
You're just made of porcelain
If you fall you'll break in half

Edit out the parts that you dislike from your life
And use your imagination to draw a painting of what you want
If I put a diamond on your finger and it don't feel right
Throw it away and believe better love is coming your way

You're the type of girl that lives in fairytales in her mind
You may live like a princess but there's no prince charming waiting by your door
It blinds you from seeing the real love in front of you
Honey baby, you should be an actress and live out your little girl dreams on the screen
You're just made of porcelain
If you fall you'll break in half
You're just fragile porcelain
Who fell and broke in half

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"Living in Fairy Tales, lyrically, is built heavily on imagery. There's beautiful imagery in that song. Almost like you could close your eyes and envision this playing out in your head. From a sonic standpoint, I know some people are going to be like, "oh his guitar work is so simple!" It's suppose to be simple and playable to other people. I've reached a point where I just do what sounds good to my own ears, that was my attempt with this song. It sounds like a lullaby in a way, but in that same vein when you go deeper than the sounds, it's kind of my little twisted take, with some cynicism in there too. This song is the next single, it'll coincide with the album release. I already have an idea in my head for what the music video will be. As a child, even as you grow up, you are kinda of built or inserted into your head this idea of what love is suppose to be, what true love is. Once you reach a certain age or level of maturity you realize that idea is not realistic. Love is never going to be like a Hollywood film, and if you constantly seek that bullshit version of love, you're going to continuously keep disappointing yourself. There is no such thing as a perfect love story in real life, there is going to be a low for every high you experience."

6. Our Storybook Ending

Genre: Folk rock, southern rock

Lyrics

Just gather all your broken pieces and take the ending as a lesson learned
It's so easy to throw the blame of us failing around
You call me difficult, I know I am
I say you should get off from your throne
The one sitting on the highest peak
We purposely try to see who can hurt the other more
But it doesn't do us both any good

If we were happily married, I'd treat you like the light of all I've ever seen
And I would send you flowers each day I'm away, it'd be a constant reminder that I never forget
I could face all my fears
And you'd be willing to compromise where you need to for me
Instead we'll both be fainthearted and never give each other all that we can
Our love will fade with the season and reignite in the Summer
If I could be someone worthwhile, I wouldn't be alone at this age, that's what you said
We were the greatest of lovers, but only between the sheets
We'd give each other all that we have
If only we could be that grown up

It takes two sides to every story
Ours wasn't that much different
I owned up to my responsibility of the pain I've caused you
But don't try to act as if it was all my fault
You should take a day to place together how we were built up and broke down
You'll see the ending comes to an even blame game between you and I

I've grown up over the years, yeah I feel exactly my age
You proudly carry the subtle shots
I'd rather you just own up to your part too
You can't keep ignoring our love
It's a crumbled diamond inside your chest, you're not gonna replace it

If we were happily married, I'd treat you like the light of all I've ever seen
And I would send you flowers each day I'm away, it'd be a constant reminder that I never forget
I could face all my fears
And you'd be willing to compromise where you need to for me
Instead we'll both be fainthearted and never give each other all that we can
Our love will fade with the season and reignite in the Summer
If I could be someone worthwhile, I wouldn't be alone at this age, that's what you said
We were the greatest of lovers, but only between the sheets
We'd give each other all that we have
If only we could be that grown up

If I'm a lost cause
A hopeless man who all he can do is break hearts and cut ties
Then scream it from the highest mountain, no one's gonna hear you
I'm lost for a cause
And I have enough hope that I'll find someone who will take me as I am

If we were happily married, I'd treat you like the light of all I've ever seen
And I would send you flowers each day I'm away, it'd be a constant reminder that I never forget
I could face all my fears
And you'd be willing to compromise where you need to for me
Instead we'll both be fainthearted and never give each other all that we can
Our love will fade with the season and reignite in the Summer
If I could be someone worthwhile, I wouldn't be alone at this age, that's what you said
We were the greatest of lovers, but only between the sheets
We'd give each other all that we have
If only we could be that grown up

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"The chorus of Our Storybook Ending is the most bombing, loud moment on the album. Everything else on the album follows a pretty peaceful, mellow sound, except this song. I even sing a pitch higher than all the other songs on Storybook Ending. I told Aaron, the drummer, to just play heavy. I wanted to create a moment that could be played live and everyoe would be singing, I think the chorus is strong enough for that to actually happen in the future, I hope it does. It's not a song I'll play every night, it's not that type of song. But man, when the moment is right, this song is huge. Lyrically, I think anyone who has been through a break-up that's not quite civil, will very much relate to the subject matter. Wouldn't it be great if you break up with someone and it's like, "Hey, both of us could have done more, it just isn't working anymore," and the other person goes, "Yep, I agree. Lesson learned." But in most cases it's not like that, it's more so a blame game to be played where you are out to see who can hurt the other more. It's not healthy."

You got me dancing right along to the song in your heart
You got me dancing right along to the song in your heart
You got me dancing right along to the song in your heart

My girl, she's the one I've dreamed about for so long
A girl born and bred in the Golden State
With raven hair and a heart of gold
A face that would make any man fall in love
And the timing isn't great, yeah
We both got battered hearts, their as blue as her eyes
But when we're together our hearts are as bright
As bright as a burning fire that keeps us warm

No matter where we go, our love will never leave us
We've set it in stone on the walls of our hearts

Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the girl in a little black dress
Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the boy in a denim jacket
Close your eyes babe, let me show you how it feels to be in heaven
Say my name, say my name, and I'll come to wherever you are
Our love will make you dance to the song in my heart
Our love will make you dance to the song in my heart

Oh, love is that slow dancing, Sunday morning, kind of feeling
Love is that song that gets you singing to its beautiful melody
Love is the cement that repairs the cracks in your heart
Love is that dream that not everyone wakes up and falls asleep to
We're the lucky ones

My boy, he's the one I've dreamed about for so long
He's got a racing mind
A heart that's been put through the wringer too many times
There's so much lying behind those warm brown eyes
Yeah, his love is kept under lock and key
But when you break that lock it flows just a river
The most beautiful river you have ever seen
And you'll never want to experience another kind of love

No matter where we go, our love will never leave us
We've set it in stone on the walls of our hearts

Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the girl in a little black dress
Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the boy in a denim jacket
Close your eyes babe, let me show you how it feels to be in heaven
Say my name, say my name, and I'll come to wherever you are
Our love will make you dance to the song in my heart
Our love will make you dance to the song in my heart

Love is that song that gets you singing to its beautiful melody
Love is the cement that repairs the cracks in your heart
Love is that dream that we wake up and fall asleep to

Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the girl in a little black dress
Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the boy in a denim jacket
Close your eyes babe, let me show you how it feels to be in heaven
Say my name, say my name, and I'll come to wherever you are
Our love will make you dance to the song in my heart
Our love will make you dance to the song in my heart

Oh, you got me dancing right along to the song in your heart
You got me dancing right along to the song in your heart

Yeah, we're dancing right along to that song in our hearts

Oh, you got me dancing right along to the song in your heart
You got me dancing right along to the song in your heart

Yeah, we're dancing right along to that song in our hearts

No matter where we go, our love will never leave us
We've set it in stone on the walls of our hearts

Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the blue-eyed girl
Take my hand, I'll steal a kiss from the brown-eyed boy
Close your eyes babe, let me show you how it feels to be in heaven
Say my name, say my name, and I'll come to wherever you are

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"Serenity and I met up in the studio over the summer. I had about a two week break from touring and she came into the studio in Los Angeles. I had this half-baked song, where I almost had the entire chorus written and this bridge, which sort of turned out to be the pre-hook instead. I liked what I had written down to that point enough for me to demo it and I had this very melodic, groovy sounding song. And for it to be a love song, which I really don't write true to the heart love songs very much. I knew I wanted it to be a duet, but I did not want to record it with someone people would expect me to make a duet with. I wanted a fresh voice on it. So, I had kicked around a few names and then I told my manager, 'what about Serenity Scott? Would she want to come into the studio?' I had met her at events and stuff before, I really just love her voice. She has this contralto vocal range that you don't usually find on the radio these days. But anyways, she agreed to come in and we spent most of that first day just writing. I showed her the demo I had so far and 'he liked it, so we kind of said, "okay, wouldn't it be cool if we each wrote a verse and made it personal?' You know a painter gets their muse, the person models for them and they draw them. That's pretty much what we did in the verses each of us wrote, we made it about each other. We had a good conversation and by the end of the day we had the song written from top to bottom. I gained a lot of respect for her musicianship as well because she wanted to be involved in all aspects. It took us about another two days to record the song and she was there bright and early every day. She very much committed herself to making this duet sound as best it could."

"I love how it turned out. In modern era, the digital age we live in, it's a very sweet sounding song. You can do so many things by yourself and you can keep yourself occupied on other things, but this is a bend in just a pure love song. There is no hidden message just love the person you love. The basic human feeling for loving someone else in 2013. Serenity was my first choice, because like I said, her voice is so cool and so different from the pop norm in this current era. It was a lot of fun to write together in the same room, you don't get that authenticity much anymore. You get both sides of this relationship, yet still remaining universal. It's one of my favorite songs on the album, if not my favorite. It's a special moment on the record. I think this one is going to be a single next year, so I'm excited to hopefully play this song live with her."

Lyrics

This is your burial site for memories clung onto
Everything that you once were is the building of what meant something one day
Now they are nothing more than thoughts thrown out that brand me
I use to wish to be more than myself

I'm a sailor without a lighthouse to guide me
I'm an author who's replaced water with rum
I keep wasting time along the dreams that no longer fly high
It's the life of a traveling man like me

I'll slow down once I've seen the peak of every mountain
I'll slow down once I've made it to the end of my run
I'll slow down when I can see the finish line and someone's waiting on me
I'll be more than my past can attest

I've seen the highest consumption of that little drug
I've gotten the life I want, the panic attacks are the side effect
And the foundation of her figure is built on someone I have only seen in fantasies
While my trust is built on a fragile heart

I'm a sailor without a lighthouse to guide me
I'm an author who's replaced water with rum
I keep wasting time along the dreams that no longer fly high
It's the life of a traveling man like me

I'll slow down once I've seen the peak of every mountain
I'll slow down once I've made it to the end of my run
I'll slow down when I can see the finish line and someone's waiting on me
I'll be more than my past can attest

I'm a sailor without a lighthouse to guide me
I'm an author who's replaced water with rum
I keep wasting time along the dreams that no longer fly high
It's the life of a traveling man like me

There's a reason a traveling man never stops running forward
I was born to be a man of the road
Catch every freight train that leaves town
Catch every strong breeze that's leaving town
Catch every trail that'll lead me to the end
And I feel someone will be waiting for me

I'll slow down once I've seen the peak of every mountain
I'll slow down once I've made it to the end of my run
I'll slow down when I can see the finish line and someone's waiting on me
I'll be more than my past can attest

I'll keep going like a rocky stream
I'll keep going until the sun meets the moon
It's the life of a traveling man like me
It's the life of a traveling man

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"Traveling Man of the Road was the stepping stone to making this record. I don't think I would have been as inspired to create an album out of this batch of songs, had this song not be written. I had been messing around on the piano for a while, I always did some extent of playing on the piano, but this is the first time I built a song around piano and makes it on an album. I don't have a ton of songs on me that I can write off a piano, I'm not a technical pianist, I just go with what sounds good to my ears. It was a good challenge for me to construct a song around the piano, since it's always been get a melody on guitar then go from there. Also lyrically, it fits well with the traveling tales of a traveling man. I think to some extent I see myself as a musician from yesteryear, who just found himself driving for hours to make it to the next gig and passing all these dirt roads. I personally think it's a beautiful song. I'm very proud of it. I look forward to dragging a piano out on tour and play this song on the piano."

9. The River (featuring Matty)

Genre: Americana, hip-hop, acoustic
Length: 1:28
Writer: Ryan Ross Hernandez, Matt Young
Producer: Ryan Ross Hernandez

Lyrics

Matty = Red
Ryan = Black

Rest your head on my shoulder
We'll sit by the river and share tales of where we've been
And where we come from
The full moon creeps at the corner of our eyes
We smoke up on the porch for the first time in so long
My heart is filling up more with each day you love me

You lost your mind for a little while
I lost mine a few years ago while I was traveling the country
You're a beautiful girl from a place I do not know

One night long ago in Nashville
Everyone around me feared I'd kill myself
I considered it for an hour before having no fight left in me
I made a list of everything that was still missing in my life
True love, a wife, a home, and kids somewhere down the line

A truckload of roses could make you stay
Tear off the pedals and throw them into the river
Watch the strong currents take them away from us
But only the road can take me away from you

From the bottom of the road, to the bottom of my heart,
I swore I'd never see the day, where you and I would ever part,
Walking hand in hand with the river by our sides,
Taking each step together, on this roller coaster ride -
That we all call life; Girl you should've been my wife,
I should've dropped the knife, and gone and taken the dive,
But it turns out I was right, I knew that you'd come back,
I just didn't wanna fight, girl you complete my pack,
Our love ain't going nowhere, girl we're set in stone,
We'll grow old together, til we're only skin and bones
Because I love this girl, more than words can say.

Ain't our love going away
Ain't our love going away
We're going down to the river
Where we watch our love blossom into a garden

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"Matt Young was an interesting choice, I think. I had this song and I knew I wanted it to serve as kind of an interlude between the first seven tracks and the last three, I feel the last three songs are different enough that this serves well as a transition towards that side. But I wasn't totally convinced that to even be the right choice, to even have it on the album. Until somehow I came in touch with Matt Young and I think it was by way of a mutual friend, I called him and told him, "I'm making an album, I have a song that you might wanna drop a verse for. The studio doors are open just stop by." Which he did maybe two or three days later and in an hour he had written a verse, which blew my mind. It even had to cut some of it from the album version, but it's a great verse. I never really thought I would have a rap verse on one of album's but I guess you never know. It was cool to collaborate with someone who is not in my artistic range. Maybe I'll return the favor and do a song with him for one of his records, that would be a cool experience too."

Lyrics

It's heart-aching to see such a pretty girl like yourself crying so much
Your make-up is running and you need not be alone
Well sweetheart, glad to see you've made it to my front steps
All I have to say is
Welcome to your adult reality

You invest your trust and they just end up letting you down
You have such a brilliant mind, Who would ever dare hurt you this way?
Who just may cause tears fall from those once ocean blue eyes?
Which fool has hurt the queen of this state?

I've heard these folk tales about people spending their whole lives happily and feeling full
Well if there's real people out there who never had a broken heart
I'm glad to say that did not happen to you and me
It's so adoring when someone has a beaten down, patched up heart
Just ask all the music greats

Your eyes are the most colorful I have ever seen
They are so bright and so full of life
Now you've learned what a vicious cycle it is out there
You're a little more like me now, so we can share war stories over drinks

I'd advise some alcohol for a minute
We all gotta learn to drown our sorrows
You should never try to hide the pain in a broken heart
Embrace it, then let the light in once you're over it
You will never feel such happiness than when you're over someone

I know a girl, her name is a secret around this town
She's a young one with strands of hair covering her face
She's waiting on someone to come and pick her up
The boy's been through all life has to offer and he'll teach her some too
It starts with a welcome
"Little lady, welcome to your adult reality"
Welcome to adult reality
Welcome to adult reality
Welcome to adult reality

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"Now we get to the latter part of the album, where I would say things get a bit more country. I wouldn't say it's full-on country, I don't think I'm the kind of artist yet who can compose country songs in that true fashion of country. It's more as my take on country, how I feel I can do it. I do love old-school country though, I love Marty Robbins, John Prine, Ray Price. I really dove deeper into that catalog of music while I was making this album. Welcome to Adult Reality is this story about a man who kind of talks this young woman through her first heartbreak experience in a relationship. This older man with a lot of wisdom on subject, passing it on to this girl, almost like a teacher-student kind of thing."

Lyrics

I'm packing my bags for the first time in so long
Hitting the road with a new suitcase, ain't nobody waiting for me
Living as free as a man can live, living with no worries in my head
I haven't seen the country in three years and I'm not waiting anymore
I've been watching the world move, not being a part of it for too long now

I'll take a couple of hats, my pair of boots and denim jacket
A few watches to know what time I'm living in, guesstimate where I am
I'll be back home by Christmas time, I guess

All a man like me needs is his guitar and microphone at hand
I'll sing the songs they know each night, it's where I feel as happy as I've ever been
I'll take all the nights alone to get to where I'll be tomorrow night
Some people like comfort
Some people may like stability
But I was born to live through the music you hear
Ain't nobody waiting for me when I'm sleeping in a hotel room

I'm a screw up, what can I say?
All my friends know I tried investing my heart
It all ends the same with drama I do not have the head-space for that no more
I'm a screw up, what more do you want to hear?

I bought a gun, I don't know why
I don't let my mind visit those dark hallways inside it anymore
I've found a reason to stay and front the blizzard on my own

All a man like me needs is his guitar and microphone at hand
A crowd that still thinks I belong on a stage
I'll take all the nights alone just to have the peace of mind
If you ever feel like visiting again, I'm where the wind takes me
You were an angel in a tunnel
But once I saw the sunlight, I had to take my life back
Return to where I belong
Somewhere east of Los Angeles and west of Tokyo

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"Where I Belong Is Where I'm Going captures the longing I had for the road while I was unable to tour or sing. It's one of the more dated songs, aside from Living in Fairy Tales and Staying Love, both of which were written in the Summer of 2012, this song was written in October or November of that same year. I said I was never going to write about the throat problems, I'm still not going to, so this is as close to that frame of mind at the time. 'All a man like me needs is his guitar and microphone', I'm so happy every night I'm on stage. I hope to be happy in other aspects, I'll never have to trade that in because I don't think I'm capable of it. I've been doing it for twelve, thirteen years. The lifestyle of a musician is mostly being alone and away from home, but once you adapt to it, for me personally, I love those moments. As long as the moments I'm home, as long as the moments of being with the people I care about and love, who also care about and love me, are enough where I can keep those memories fresh in my mind while trying to fall asleep in a hotel room somewhere in Midwestern America or Norway or whatever. It was important for me to write a song that's just me, a guitar, a mic. That's it. That's how we recorded it in the studio and we didn't have a lot of takes either, we mostly kept it on the demo we first messed around with, you can hear the guitar slightly off-tone and everything. It's almost a confessional within a song."

Lyrics

The Summer showers are no longer hitting your window pane
The warm sun is closing shop for the year It's saying goodbye, until next time, my friend
We were running on a high only found when it heats up
We never kept our watches on the right time zone, it didn't matter how time was rolling

It was in the Summer when your mother got sick
It broke you down, but you kept moving forward
The next Summer didn't get much better
Another tour, another heartache, now I became
You'll feel better come October, no more birthday to celebrate
Your finger no longer carries a ring, I no longer hold you back from what you desire

But just take a look back to remember where you came from
We can hold each other for another night and won't feel so alone
It might take a month, year, or lifetime, but you'll realize why
We might go 'round but we're always on the same wheel

You'll find your love in colder weather
I'll find mine in West Coast sunshine
Your shoes have traveled as much as mine, probably even more
How are those heels treating you?
Sometimes you just need to wear a pair of boots to haul yourself around, baby

Take a look back to remember where you came from
We can't hold each other for another night and I won't feel alone
Just go on and travel the plains I never dared cross
I'll see you in six months before I lock myself up again, if you don't hate my guts

Life is a funny time, you got your dream and nobody to share it with
Life is a lovely time, just get past the dark hallows and find yourself your forever

It might take years and years before that someone comes
But I'll keep waitin' for her to show up

Take a look back to remember where you came from
We can go our separate ways and you'll never feel that lonely no more
If you ever don't feel right, just runaway to Big Sky Country
It's my favorite place to hide when the air gets heavy in the city
And the day I find that I have nowhere else to roam
I'll find myself a wife and have kids with her someday
That day's not today, I got roads left to travel
But a little bit of dreaming can be a beautiful thing

Ryan Ross Hernandez's Commentary

"I had a tough time deciding how I wanted to close out this record. Until I had written Seasons Changin' I kept changing my mind and thought about maybe bringing back songs that didn't make the last record and rework them. But Seasons Changin' came later in the recording process, it was the third to last song written toward it. Once I had written it down though, I knew this was going to be the perfect song to end the album. Just close it out and a lot of hopefulness. It's not a booming closer nor is it a ballad. It almost takes a little elements from the songs prior to it to create this Fall-ish, Winter vibe of embracing the colder weather and having a positive outlook on what's to come in colder seasons. It's a very personal song lyrically, I enjoy hearing it back because I remember where every line comes from in my head. I absolutely love it. It's also the only song to have harmonica on this record, I almost thought it wasn't going to get in there, but it made it on this song. I'm happy with Seasons Changin' closing off the album. For me at least, it leaves me feeling warm. I hope it has the same effect for the listeners when they get through the album. A little bit of dreaming can be a beautiful thing."

OOC: well this is just incredible.

Matt: Ryan, it was an absolute honour to work with a musical legend like yourself. This is an incredible record and I am honoured to have worked with such a genius. If ever you need me to throw another rap verse into the mix somewhere, just call me.

Ryan: Thank you very much. I don't consider myself a legend though, but thank you for the very humbling complement. Thank you for coming on a track and dropping a verse for it. You know not many people would agree to be on a song that lasts a minute in a half, but you were all behind the idea. I don't know how many more songs I have in me that may require a rap verse, but I will be sure to keep your number close by for if that day arises again.

OOC: Thanks! I don't know how I feel about it yet, but it's nice to hear compliments from others enjoying it.

OOC: I think you always do a wonderful job with albums and singles, nothing new here :P I've always had mixed feelings about Ryan personally but his music is always top notch which can be very hard to do on here, staying consistent with the quality and all that. Overall, it's another great album :)

"My God! We truly are a talented bunch. The fact that we write entire albums all on our own while the biggest stars in the world have 45 co-writers on ONE track?? Where the hell are OUR record deals and GRAMMYS?" -BrownSugar

OOC: Haha, why thank you! :P Yeah, even I have had my mixed feeling about Ryan's personality. I'm trying really hard to make people forget about his past-jerk ways, but I've noticed it's really difficult to change people's perspective. Thanks, I've tried to make the album threads I do for RRH the best I can. I am proud of this one. :)

OOC: Just as I've stated in the past; it's glad to see Ryan back in action. It feels like he hasn't been around in ages, haha. I think you did a fantastic job overall with this album. The lyrics and the descriptions were great. I also love the lyrics you wrote for Serenity's verse on track 7. Really great work here.

OOC: Thanks! I never consider an RP I write amazing or anything, but I'm just glad to see others taking the time to read it.

OOC: Haha, to me it doesn't feel like he's been away that long. I've kept him around in some capacity, but I did not write an album for him since Spring 2012. Thank you, glad to hear other's opinion on it. It took me months to write "Song in My Heart," it had about four or five complete lyric changes before I was happy enough to include it, but I am happy with how it turned out. Thank you for the very kind words.
