Title: "Make It Right"
Album: Diamond in the Rough
Label: Diamond Records
Production: Jared Nevo, Nadia Berry
Lyrics: Nadia Berry

UserPostedImage

After a break away from her solo career, which some would go as far as to call a fairly lengthy one due to Nadia's workaholic reputation, the "Records On" hitmaker is back with brand new studio album Diamond in the Rough and the premiere of its lead single, "Make It Right". For Nadia, we're sure she's had a lot to write about over the past year, what with the breakdown of her relationship with long-term partner Ryan Ross Hernandez. Of course, with that came Nadia stepping down from her position at North Hill Records and terminating her own contract, as well as forming a new relationship with Blood of Wecz guitarist, Mark Talley.

With no label to support her, Nadia has set up her own with her manager to assist, Diamond Records, solely in support of her latest album. The move is a risky one and will see Nadia's music made and distributed in the way that she wants, having full control over the whole process, which she confirms she didn't want to miss out on if another label took her on. However, promotional plans are not going ignored and Nadia and her team are making sure word will get around on her new music, striking a deal with Clear Channel Outdoor to display advertisements for the new single at hotspots around the world. Features in Rolling Stone, UNITED and Cosmopolitan are also lined up for next year, which include exclusives interviews with the songstress.

Nadia rather unexpectedly dominated last year with the critically acclaimed Open Heart Surgery and Hera, the latter going onto break first week album records. For an artist who was used to sharing the spotlight with three other girls in GirlSpice, Nadia proved she could do it all on her own and racked up the hits to put out The Collection, plus her own insightful documentary to support the release. In album sales alone, she's racked up 13 million and shows no sign of slowing down with her upcoming release. More recently, she went out on her own sell-out arena tour around North America, and rumours suggest the star could be travelling the world in support of Diamond in the Rough.

With the soft rock vibes of Open Heart and the more pop/electronic oriented feel to Hera, Nadia confirms she went back to her roots with this new album and wanted to make almost the sister record to Open Heart Surgery, something raw and honest, but with a totally different story to tell in the lyrics. "I feel like I've finally found my sound," Nadia reveals when talking about her new album, "I've experimented with a variety of genres over the years and this album just came very naturally to me, both with the sound and the lyrics. I knew what I wanted it to be like before I had even made it."

From the sound of lead single "Make It Right", Nadia has definitely accomplished that raw feeling, stripping away the electronic, computersed beats on the majority of Hera and putting out a single more authentic within itself, a cheerful and upbeat indie pop sound that keeps that vibe of her Open Heart Surgery record, but expands on it and shows a clear growth with both her vocals and the lyrics to the track. The song itself has an almost 80s feel to it with its funky basslines and handclaps, it's a retro sound with a modern twist and fuses slight R&B with gentle rock sounds, powerful live drums adding into the track around the mid-point to add a new lease of life to the song and kick up the tempo a notch.

Vocally, Nadia has never needed some autotune slapped on top of her to sound good on record, she's a better singer than most would suspect for a GirlSpice member, and is more than showing it with the new single. She's never sounded better and her voice sounds completely untouched, furthering the vintage, old school vibes as she sings effortlessly over the funk-rock groove to the song. "Make It Right" opens gently, Nadia delivering the first verse in almost spoken word, before the chorus kicks in, diving straight into singing and additional vocals from her add into the background. Once the live drums add in straight after, her voice builds with power in the second verse and keeps that force throughout the song and into the following chorus, where her vocals layer on top of each other to add strength to the track. A simple bassline plays underneath her voice for the middle-eight and the delivery of the lyrics is once again gentle and it almost feels like Nadia's holding back for just a moment, before giving her all in the final chorus, belting out the lines as stronger drums burst into the song, before it draws to a slow close, a simple handclapped outro heard before its end.

Lyrically, "Make It Right" is fresh within its sound, but familiar enough in its lyrics to satisfy her long-term fans, whilst drawing in new listeners. Nadia has often sung about love and and sex in artistic ways to avoid making her lyrics generic or played out, her song "Records On" as an example, used to unite love within a relationship and her love of music. "Make It Right" however, lyrically deals with the unexpected turns and troubles within a constant off-on relationship that often gets patched up by getting "straight to loving" as she sings. However, it's in no way a sexual song with raunchy lyrics, and although it may be about the making up after a heated argument, it's in fact bittersweet for the most part, as she proves with the line "Love and hate ain't very far from one another". Later on in the song, she sings "There's a fire in your heart that I'm yet to ignite" almost in a sad tone, her emotion felt in the delivery of the line, suggesting that the other person may not feel as strongly about her as she does for them, and that they'll never make it right, but the highs in the relationship keep them together for the time-being.

Overall, it's a beautiful return for Nadia Berry and she shows with ease that she's more than evolved as both a singer and songwriter. It's by no means a shocking comeback with a total new direction, but we think she's achieved the right balance and is making a smart move with this track marking her return to the scene.

Another night spent in different beds
With an imaginary gun pointed to your head
All these thoughts that you make me discover
Love and hate ain't very far from one another
And babe, it's our greatest talent
Each day brings a new challenge
A kiss could turn into a word-made war
But we always get past it all

Stupid, stupid games that we've always played
We fight to look forward to the making up
So I'll kiss your lips to keep your mouth shut
Stupid, stupid games played in our own special way
Cause tonight, we're gonna get straight to loving
We'll make the bad between us fade to nothing
I just want you to go and dim the light
Cause tonight, we're gonna make it right

Make it right, oh, oh, make it right
Tonight, we're gonna make it right, make it right
Make it right, oh, oh, make it right
Tonight, we're gonna make it right, make it right

You and me, we're far from the ordinary
Said you and me, it always felt so legendary
So let me loosen up that heart made of steel
We're hurting from meaningless curses, but we'll heal
The truth lies in your eyes, that's why I'm still here
Your loving always helps to seal the deal

Stupid, stupid games that we've always played
We fight to look forward to the making up
So I'll kiss your lips to keep your mouth shut
Stupid, stupid games played in our own special way
Cause tonight, we're gonna get straight to loving
We'll make the bad between us fade to nothing
I just want you to go and dim the light
Cause tonight, we're gonna make it right

Make it right, oh, oh, make it right
Tonight, we're gonna make it right, make it right
Make it right, oh, oh, make it right
Tonight, we're gonna make it right, make it right

I'm gonna make it right, tonight
And when your mind's screaming out for help
I'm gonna make you see, make you believe
That there's no need to be scared
Dim the afternoon sky into a starry midnight
There's a fire in your heart that I'm yet to ignite
So I'll take out the dark with the brightest light
Start a wildfire to burn away these lonely nights

Stupid, stupid games that we've always played
We fight to look forward to the making up
So I'll kiss your lips to keep your mouth shut
Stupid, stupid games played in our own special way
Cause tonight, we're gonna get straight to loving
We'll make the bad between us fade to nothing
I just want you to go and dim the light
Cause tonight, we're gonna make it right

Erich: Nadia is the kind of woman who will inspire a suicide cult. A suicide cult you'll WANT to join.

Ryan: Nadia has proved time and time again that she is at the forefront of pop music and in my own humble opinion, the leader. It's so refreshing to hear pop music without some sort of ridiculous electronic bass thrown in somewhere. I'm absolutely loving this and you have once again made me ever envious of your song writing ability. Long may the 80's pop revival continue because this right here, is massive. Standing ovation from all of PURE.

OOC: Cracking RP and the lyrics are up there with your best. Really, really good! I'm seriously jealous of your lyrics.

Katie: Damn it Berry....I put a song out at long last and then you just come along and totally upstage me D: I'm just kidding sweetie, you know I love you and I love this track. I'm so happy you've found your true self now and this sounds so genuine and pure. Love the indie vibe behind it and I love how you always manage to grow in your music. You're the star of the pop world! :)

Mark: Hmmm....this is Berry Berry good....buuuut bad puns aside, this is truly exceptional, beautiful. Really something else. The rest of those pop girls will have a job keeping up with you. Really love the song and your lyrics are so deep and meaningful as always. Someone's the full package, indeed ;)

Ooc: totes jell of your lyrics as always ;) your work for Nadia is always your best imo and this is up there with your best lyrics :)

Nadia: That means so much coming from an artist like you, Ryan. I've followed your music from the very beginning to where you are now and I'm a huge fan, so I definitely value your opinion. Not only are you very talented, you're an amazing writer, so no need to envy me at all. I definitely agree though, the 80's is where it's at! Sending all my love to PURE. :)

OOC: Thank you very much! I have a lot of favourite writers on here and you're definitely one of them.

Over the years, you've definitely helped shape my sound and taught me a lot, so I have you to thank! And thank you Berry much, Marcus! Hehe. I'm so glad you like it though, considering you're one of the people I was hoping would. Aww, I am?! At last, I've finally reached the Talley level, yay! ;)

OOC: It's great to see Nadia back! What I love about this record in particular is that it's quite different from her previous works and continues to show exactly why she is such an innovative pop star on here. Your best work also seems to really come out with Nadia and this is certainly no different. This RP is ace and the lyrics are perfect. Amazing work here, can't wait for her album!

James: Now this is the type of pop music I can listen to and enjoy, oh Nadia, why aren't there more stars like yourself? Please, keep doing what you're doing. It's a shame that you're no longer with North Hill Records, but I certainly wish you the very best of luck in your career. I know it will continue to flourish :)
