“One Life To Live” is an E.P by American alternative musician ‘Alex Simms’. It marks the first collection of music to be released from the musician since his successful debut album ‘Enigma’ which was released back in June 2013. The E.P consists of five tracks written between August and October 2013, tracks include two collaborations from Simms, both of which have seen Alex take criticism from some section of his fanbase due to the fact that the collaborators are both very much mainstream pop musicians, the title track “One Life To Live” features ‘Jennifer Armstrong’ and the other “Forever Yours, Never Mine” which features ‘Nadia Berry’, the latter was released as a single and peaked at number #2 on the singles chart, proving the song to be a success. Following the release of the collaborative track with ‘Nadia Berry’, Simms opted to write a blog which addressed the criticisms that he received, and made a bold statement which declared that he refuses to be confined to just the alternative music scene
“I should point out that I believe that there should be no limitations to your creativity and to your art. I mean if you’re gonna pass up the opportunity to work with someone so hugely talented just because you think it could p*ss off a small minority of your fans then I hope you enjoy stagnating because that’s what will happen if you have nothing forcing you to reach the next level.
And for the few of you out there that claim to be ‘real-punk’ and will refuse to listen to the music of a sell-out, you may want to avoid the next single as it features the wonderfully talented ‘Jennifer Armstrong’! But may I just ask, what is the point in there being stars, if everybody is afraid to reach for them?”The outcome of this appears to have had a positive impact on Alex Simms, he may have lost a few of his fans that weren’t happy with him “selling-out” but his fanbase has grown even more as an outcome, his music has now begun to reach a far greater range of listeners, to the point where it’s not just the alternative or the scene fans that are finding his music but instead just the general music fan.
The E.P features a much more softer side to Simms’ music, it still features energetic electric guitars but with more of an emphasis on the melodic sense of the music, with the words dictating the feeling of the song rather than the instrumentals throughout the E.P, just one of the other reasons why he has been labelled a sell-out. But it appears that he is ready to break free of the shackles of the alternative genre and prove himself as a musician more than just a Rockstar.
The E.P was recorded at Half-Moon Studios in Las Vegas, Nevada between September and October 2013, the E.P was produced by Alex Simms and Faith Browdy. It is thought that there could be another single released from the E.P but with recent announcements of a possible project with ‘Julia Volkova’ it would appear that his attention may have turned to an alternative route, but the E.P will be available online as a ‘pay-what-you-want’ sort of release, it will be released on December 1, 2013 through ‘Songs to Love and Die By!’
