Tracklisting 1. Colors 2. Brand New Silence 3. Take Take Take 4. The Girl Who Stopped Thinking 5. Less Sympathy 6. Parachutes and Broken Things[/center] 1. ColorsOverviewThe first song of any album sets the tone for what is to come. The title track of "Colors" is no different. It delivers the first taste of what, if all goes well, will be a successful career for Clara Thompson started by her first album. With a steady beat and Clara's vocals it sucks the listener in for what is one of the more seductive songs on the album. Produced by Katie Coyle the song is likely to be a single down the road. Lyrics/ThemesBlue is like the ocean I'm here to cross it Red is like the lipstick I'm wearing to the opera Yellow's like the sun up there I'll never let it leave White is like the paper I'm using to guide me Silver's like guitar strings and dimes from green skies
Sing for the colors in the dead night sky Sing for bark and green Sing for blue and white It's all swirling around in me The world is peach and red Its just gold and bright
Paint my sky Paint it bright Paint around Slip and slide let it all rain down Paint my head Paint it shades of pink and red Paint all around Dont let it dry let it all rain down
Red is like the apple; I'm Eve with a new tattoo Green is like the place I've had to leave White is what I'm always supposed to be But there's so many shades of red and pink
Paint my sky Paint it bright Paint around Slip and slide let it all rain down Paint my head Paint it shades of pink and red Paint all around Dont let it dry let it all rain down
Dont white out I want to be red and gold and green and blue and brown Dont white out I'll be singing this til times come to an end
Paint my sky Paint it bright Paint around Slip and slide let it all rain down Paint my head Paint it shades of pink and red Paint all around Dont let it dry let it all rain down The first song is really an introduction to Clara as a person and as an artist. The album itself portrays her as colorful and this song documents it. Clara is singing about her life through colors. "I see the world for all of the colors in it. Not always the visual aspects but the different shades in people or just of the world and I really just thought about how beautiful that is when I was writing this song and this album and I wanted to express my separate shades and make this album a biography of all my colors" says Clara. The song accomplishes this well and states the purpose of the album and details Clara's life in colorful metaphors even alluding to Eve and the Garden of Eden. Music/Sound
The song begins with Clara singing high and muffled chords in the background. She sings high and then a bit lower creating contrast as the chords, loaded with reverb play in the background. Bass and a subtle drum beat join in quickly with quiet lead guitar setting the mood in time with the drums and building through the first two verses. When the chorus arrives the guitar goes into overdrive as Clara sings with harmonies in a slightly lower register making the chorus distinct from the rest of the song and very powerful. Then things return to only the guitar and Clara as she breaks the melody for the first verses in what is the most memorable song as if the chorus was a phoenix burning but now Clara was reborn from the ashes to continue the song in a new melody. The instruments build slowly again to the next chorus after which Clara goes up very high singing the bridge softly as the guitars play a memorable riff into the last chorus which is overlayed with lots of "ooh"s on vocals. Then everything fades out and the song is over. 2. Brand New SilenceOverviewThe second song off of her debut album "Colors", "Brand New Silence" is a more concise song than the first track. It lacks the random melody variations and uses a full band for the full song. It was first released in the form of a video Clara posted on her website. The lyrics have changed since then and now the song has a full band behind it but most else is the same. The song was produced by Katie Coyle and written by Clara Thompson. Lyrically it's about a releationship that was great suddenly turning sour and ending. Lyrics/themeYour skin is smooth and warm Like the day we first met Your eyes like a thunderstorm Like my new regret It's louder than thunder That maybe I'm not meant to be here
The bread staled The rain turned to snow Instead of washing the hurt It just gathered dirt It just gathered dirt
I tried to listen But you let without a word Last kiss on the cheek And I'm standing like an idiot Wondering how Wondering where And why we stopped speaking
Your smile's so nice Like the first few weeks But our love turned to ice Just like the creeks Frozen my heart til it shattered Just another disaster
I just thinking What if it was all better But life just keeps stinging Just like a beehive Honey comes with a price Some sweet things have a disguise
I tried to listen But you let without a word Last kiss on the cheek And I'm standing like an idiot Wondering how Wondering where And why we stopped speaking
I tried to listen But you let without a word Last kiss on the cheek And I'm standing like an idiot Wondering how Wondering where And why we stopped speaking
Sometimes winter seems neverending Sometimes spring is too good to be true Sometimes bees sting and we keep forgetting That our lives are all we have to doAt this point in the album Clara has moved from the first track which was basically introducing herself and her album now to the first real taste of what she will be like as an artist. Full of similes, "Brand New Silence" shows the calmer side of Clara's songwriting. Before she was "Eve with a new tattoo" but now Clara has settled painting a scenario of her as the passive girlfriend who wants things to work but the spark between her and her partner has gone and its ending. Full of metaphors the song is bound to be a fan favorite as it shows the innocent side of Clara. "This was one of the first songs I wrote for the record. I kind of wanted to start the album with one of my sweeter songs where although I was sad I wasn't too emotional. I knew things had to end with this particular relationship and I was just dissapointed that they did." says Clara. The song points the way to what is bound to be an emotional breakup record but this song starts things out light. Music/Sound
The song starts immediately with Clara singing in a mid tone as a hi-hat based beat and bass play in the background. The bass drives the song as piano joins in. the atmosphere has been crafted with these intruments as Clara sings the first verse. Then for the prechorus her voice goes higher but she is still in control as the drums and piano both climax before the chorus. Guitar tones comes in and power chords separate the chorus from the rest of the song as Clara sings the smooth melody with harmonies faintly being sung in the background. Then it's back to form with the drums and bass but the piano does switch playing more in the foreground of the song. This continues with the guitar coming back for the chorus as the drums get louder. In the bridge the guitar and piano both play a melody with the drums and bass driving them in an instrumental section. At the end all but a piano and bass stop as Clara sings a different, soothing melody to end the song. |

3. Take Take TakeOverviewThe third track from Clara Thompson's debut album "Colors" is a radio-ready song called "Take Take Take". It is certainly the most poppy of Clara's songs with heavy synth and a catchy hook. Clara wrote the lyrics. Most of the album was produced by Katie Coyle, but this song as well as a few others were produced by Avil Hartman. The song is about a non-functioning relationship in which the man is simply taking everything he can out of the relationship leaving Clara with nothing. Clara has confirmed that this will be either the first or second single from "Colors". Lyrics/ThemeMy story starts alone 'til I heard your guitar tone The apple for my Eve After Adam had to leave You held me You fooled me You made me cry til I'm dancing on my own
It didn't take long For the cigarette to burn One more puff of smoke An I'm like ashes on the floor
You can take take take all my life You took my innocence you took me for a ride you just take take take all the time Take my lungs Take my heart Take my body for a ride You just take take take all your life You left me helpless You burnt me alive You take take take for yourself Take my breath away Take the rest of my life Take my body as you did that night
Pulled me into the game Now I'll never be the same Drunk on your touch the hangover is too much Because I made a bad bet Its over I cant pay my debt
Before too long You wore off I let you go But there are still scars below
You can take take take all my life You took my innocence you took me for a ride you just take take take all the time Take my lungs Take my heart Take my body for a ride You just take take take all your life You left me helpless You burnt me alive You take take take for yourself Take my breath away Take the rest of my life Take my body as you did that night
So I leave you alone I cant stand your name Never want to hear your voice Because now I know Our love was a game A game A game And I lost
You can take take take all my life You took my innocence you took me for a ride you just take take take all the time Take my lungs Take my heart Take my body for a ride You just take take take all your life You left me helpless You burnt me alive You take take take for yourself Take my breath away Take the rest of my life Take my body as you did that night"This is one of the most emotional songs on the record" says Clara. Most of Clara's album deals with anger, dissapointment, and desire but this song is all about regret. Clara hasn't commented but it's fairly obvious that the song is written about Mount Olympus singer/guitarist Wil Reasons whom Clara was dating last year. she didn't confirm that but did say: "It's about a relationship basically with a guy who is using you and seducing you into his world which really isn't as great as it was made out to be. Because drugs sex and rock and roll is exactly that: drugs sex and rock and roll. This song is about falling for a guy who wants that lifestyle and wants to bring the girl into it with him." The song itself takes some of the innocence out of Clara's persona as their are several sexual lyrics. Clara also cleverly plays with the idea of having her breath taken away by a guy which is usually supposed to be a bad thing but she turns it into a horrid image of suffocation and literally taking breath away. Music/Sound
One of the most radio-friendly songs on the album, "Take Take Take" starts with very bright electric guitar chords with a simple bass drum supplying the beat. Clara sings in the middle of her register in a cold, reflective tone. Soon bass joins in supplying root notes in 1/8 time with the drum beat as the melody opens up and Clara begins holding the notes a little bit longer. Soon a snare drum joins in with the bass drum as Clara reaches her signature falsetto as the first verse begins to end. The drums fade in the prechorus as Clara's voice is highlighted with just ringing chords and a soft, echoy piano in the background. But soon the bass drum comes back building faster and faster in perfect time with a bass synth that also builds up to the chorus. Then the chorus comes with the synth playing a heavy role as the sweet bass sound dominates with the piano and guitar playing only a minor role as Clara sings the catchy, passionate lyrics while a slow dance beat is played. The next verse continues the pattern of the first but with the piano echoing a gentle melody until the next chorus comes just as powerful as the first. During the bridge the piano plays a major part as the drums fade out again. A smooth, fading electronic sound also plays the root notes as Clara sings with no guitar bass or drums. Her voice is highlighted again. As the bridge ends Clara hits a fairly high note, not the highest she can hit, but the highest of the song which transitions to the final chorus. 4. The Girl Who Stopped ThinkingOverviewAfter a very catchy and produced track loaded with pop sensibility in track three "Take, Take Take", Clara steps back for an acoustic track with only vocals and guitars. "The Girl Who Stopped Thinking" is the simplest song on Clara Thompson's debut record, "Colors". It was produced by the legendary Katie Coyle and written by Clara. The song is a play on girls from fairytales making them the villains and the more rebellious girl who loves a good fight the hero. Lyrics/ThemeShe was laying there on a hill He was handsome with dark eyes I was watching from up in my tree Just as he was passing by He looked up and smiled at me And I never said goodbye
We had a house in the valley We were dancing all night The girl on the hill slept all day And he never saw her sleeping But one day in her sleep she swept him away He left with the girl who stopped thinking
I never cry I never cry I just go to wars I put on my armor and sigh That all fairytale girls are whores
He put his love in a sleeping beauty Though her body was well awake I brought my sword up the fight He didnt care that my heart was aching He told me to get out of sight He stayed with the girl who stopped thinking
I never cry I never cry I just go to wars I put on my armor and sigh That all fairytale girls are whores
And ohhh though I never cry I just wish it wasnt so And oh I wish he'd know That while he was blinking He fell for the girl who stopped thinking He fell for the girl who stopped thinking
I never cry I never cry I just go to wars I put on my armor and sigh That all fairytale girls are whores"The Girl Who Stopped Thinking" is the song on Clara's debut album that really makes a story better than the other songs which are more results or causes or snippets of a story. She builds the romance between her and the man but then has him snatched away by a Sleeping Beauty character. Just as she did with the third song she again plays with what is usually a positive concept and flips it making it sinister. She does that while making a song that is essentially about jealousy and dealing with it. "I've had men stolen from me a few times. It sucks. This song is just about the stupid blonde bitch who steals your man just because she has bigger breasts and will slut it up for whoever they can. And then it puts the contrast of the more quirky, adventurous girl who is ready to fight Sleeping Beauty. The sleeping is a metaphoric sleep basically meaning shes a bimbo whore who doesn't know how to dress or what 2+2 is. It's just a fun song. I love it and I hope you do too. I wont go into more detail because I'll get pissed off and start ranting. Haha." Music/Sound
The song begins with Clara singing calmly over appregio style guitar chords. The recording is meant to be very organic as every sound of every time Clara's hand slides on the strings can be faintly heard. As the verse carries on Clara plays muted chords releasing them to ring at every full note. As she does this her voice gets higher showing off her range even in a very quiet tone. As she approaches the chorus a few "ooh"s are sung in the background still in a high voice. Clara sings the memorable chorus as she strums openly on the guitar letting the chords ring. She mutes and then releases the chords after the chorus for a measure transitioning back to the verse. Her tone is high and calm still but there is more anger also. she seems more bitter and upset than the first verse and this continues into the second chorus. Then a very quiet but fuzzy electric guitar comes in adding more depth to the song as Clara reaches the bridge singing very high still. The guitar plays open chords then muted plays individual notes. It continues alternating throughout the bridge. Then the chord progression builds with random vocal "ooh"s and "aah"s in the background until the final chorus comes with both guitars playing. |
