Artist Profile:

Band/artist name: Mark Talley
Genre: Indie rock
Formed: ?? 1988, at birth, I suppose - weird question. I started playing music in 2003 and went solo in 2012.
Age: 25
Song Count: 1
Followers: 2,641,889
Likes: Music, blogging, live crowds, collecting guitars, coffee, cigarettes and apples (the fruit, not the technology).
Dislikes: Drugs, alcohol (just for me, others can do as they like), cats, pears, and Apple (the technology, not the fruit).

Artist Says:

"Hi. For those who have stumbled here by accident, my name is Mark Talley. I am 25-years old and I am the (soon to be former) guitarist in death metal band Blood of Wecz. I also play some indie rock on my spare time that I am soon to take a lot more seriously. Planning to bring about a big change in my career over the course of the next few years with some albums, EPs and tours coming your way. However, I am something of a prolific writer, and I quite often just write songs off the bat when I've got nothing else to do. So, I thought, there's no point in wasting those tracks I write and don't want to use on my albums for whatever reasons, right? Correct. So, I've set myself up with this little Soundcloud page to indulge my own musicianship and songwriting addiction more than anything, but also hopefully for you guys to come along, hit play and enjoy hearing some of my music in a less formal setting. If I had a big head I'd say this is my way of giving back for all the love you have all shown me over the years, with some free streams and downloads of some Mark Talley exclusives.

We're calling this "Mark Talley: The Acoustic Sessions" for reasons that are far more obvious than I need to explain - but allow me to anyway. I write most of my stuff on my acoustic guitar, but I've rarely recorded anything, band or solo, on my acoustic, so I wanted to take this chance to do that and provide something a little different. The songs you will hear on this page are going to be a result of my 'acoustic sessions'. These are just going to be stripped back recordings with myself and my guitar that I've recorded myself. No mixing either. These will be posted as recorded - raw (in a way) and live (when recorded anyway). I'm hoping you all like the tracks. Most are pretty rough and ready as I'm just going to record them as I write them and hope for the best. Rather than the polished finished article that you will see when my albums start coming out, this will be more like part of the early process. You'll be hearing some prototypes, some soundbites, some failed songs and even some full tracks that I've written and just chosen not to use for whatever reason. Think of it as an audio notebook. These are my scribblings and etchings, but with sound. Themes will be random, different, satirical (at times), topical and probably a bit more fun and loose than in my professional work.

I think when you've worked in music as long as I have, it almost becomes like an unhealthy necessity. In a way, as cheesy and lame as it may sound, music becomes like oxygen when you get into it so early. I've been a fully-fledged professional touring artist since just after my 15th birthday, and in many ways that can totally screw with your brain. Surrounded by artists, musicians and music from that age for a solid decade gives you the sort of feeling that it's all you have to exist for. And, professionally at least, I suppose that's true for me. This is the only thing I'm good at (chiefly because I've never tried anything else), and I sometimes get scared that if I should ever stop then I'll end up with absolutely nothing to offer the world.

It's a labour of love as well, though. Over the years, I've worked with, toured with and recorded with artists in death metal, indie, punk, jazz, folk and most recently pop. What it's done is broaden my horizons and made me appreciate so many different kinds of music. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for you to see me listening to like Necrophagist one minute, then Arctic Monkeys or PURE and then GirlSpice or Hannah Beth. I just love music, and I listen to so many different styles that I love to experiment with my own music. I'm primarily an indie artist, but I want to use this page to experiment a little. What you'll hear will be 90 per cent indie rock, but I might occasionally drop a casual poppier effort on you, or something a little jazzy. At the end of the day, I just want to have a bit of fun and come up with what I come up with. Experimentation is the mother of discovery, is the mother of all art.

Anyway, I'm not sure there is much else I can say. I've started this Soundcloud from a tour bus that is on its way to a Australian airport so we can fly to our next destination on the last Blood of Wecz tour. Hopefully the songs will start coming soon and you guys can start to hear a bit more from the mind and music of myself.

Much love forever,

Mark(us)"

Mark says: "This is a song that's a bit of a double-edged sword. It was the first one I wrote with these sessions in mind, really, when we had just arrived in Japan on the Wecz tour. I decided I wanted to do something that would let me set out my stall as a solo artist, and for that, I thought what better than to just have a Soundcloud page full of examples? So more than any other, this is like a demo of the demo tracks, and yeah, like I say it has a bit of a double meaning behind it. On one hand, it's about crime and the underworld, and someone running away from their past and all the evil things they've done. But on another level it's all about commitment issues, and people who are scared to put their neck on the line for someone else. In short, if someone would rather run than stay around and face the music with you, then they are not the right person for you. It sounds quite serious, thematically, and quite morbid, but honestly, I was a happy happy soul when I was writing this one. I'm not really much of a literal sort of musician. I know a lot of people like to write about experiences in their own love life - some people have made whole careers from their own colourful romantic liaisons in fact - but for me, I like to write about proverbial or imagined situations. I mean, I doubt Donna Tartt ever really slayed any of her friends. I think, listening to it back as well, that this is probably the most simplistic you'll ever hear my lyrics, but I think it works along with the sort of feel and theme of the song. Normally, I would be a bit more adventurous with my metaphors and my thesaurus, but I wanted to explore a new style of lyrical writing. Like I say, this page is like an audible notebook, and I'm pleased with the way this first proverbial scribbling turned out, myself. But yeah, musically as well, this is quite a light hearted and upbeat one, even though the theme might not be - it has a sort of fresh and airy ominousness to it, in a way. Refreshing. And I think I'm confusing everyone, including myself, right now, so I'll wrap it up. I wrote this quite quickly, and it's just a simple little indie track without any bells or whistles. Hopefully it comes across alright.

Track: //Beg//Steal//Borrow//
Genre: Indie
Length: 4:47
Artist: Mark Talley
Recorded: Osaka, Japan

At the back of another darkened coffee shop
You were twisting your words while we were running from cops
Another chance to duck and weave, construct an alibi
But they'll never believe until you look them in the eye

A chance to run, another gap to step into and flee
Just duck and dive, it's a side of you I never wanted to see
Just turn your back and walk away, don't around again
Don't let the door strike your back as you continue to pretend

Beg, steal and borrow, take another dime from the box,
Clouds, rain and sorrow, this key fits but the door never locks
Where did you come from, what's the chance you'll never return?
No smoke without the flames, you play with fire, so how you scared to burn?
Beg steal and borrow, clouds rain and sorrow
But I've never seen that look, like the way you tell me you'd never leave me

She never dealt with the indignity of a consequence
Listened to the reasoning without desire to ever make sense
She walked a tightrope but she never played the game
No safety net to stop her fall, no harness could ever tame

Love everyone, trust a few but do wrong to none
It's just a prose, another play, well I hope you had fun
I'm not upset you lied to me, I just long for the day that I could trust
It's hard for you to grow in a world forged from lies and pixie dust

Beg, steal and borrow, take another dime from the box,
Clouds, rain and sorrow, this key fits but the door never locks
Where did you come from, what's the chance you'll never return?
No smoke without the flames, you play with fire, so how you scared to burn?
Beg steal and borrow, clouds rain and sorrow
But I've never seen that look, like the way you tell me you'd never leave me

When you look into my eyes what can you see beyond the shade?
I hope you've got a memory, because this love's begun to fade
Lust is not worth cherishing when it's such a fleeting notion
To be loved is to trust what a rainfall is to the ocean

Beg, steal and borrow, take another dime from the box,
Clouds, rain and sorrow, this key fits but the door never locks
Where did you come from, what's the chance you'll never return?
No smoke without the flames, you play with fire, so how you scared to burn?
Beg steal and borrow, clouds rain and sorrow
But I've never seen that look, like the way you tell me you'd never leave me

The last words you spoke were the last to give me hope
The ones that saw me swinging from a length of my own rope
The first day that I felt alone was the first I didn't believe you
That moment I could see in your face there was no way I could leave you

Beg, steal and borrow, take another dime from the box,
Clouds, rain and sorrow, this key fits but the door never locks
Where did you come from, what's the chance you'll never return?
No smoke without the flames, you play with fire, so how you scared to burn?
Beg steal and borrow, clouds rain and sorrow
But I've never seen that look, like the way you tell me you'd never leave me

Mark: I agree sir. I think the term "guilty pleasure" is very disrespectful and I hate when people use it. I merely love bands like Girlspice. Also, be sure to check out the first track above ;)

Mark: Why thank you, Mr Hess, I'm very glad you liked it. And I could not agree more. If I'm sharing Brylcreem with someone, I need to know they have my bacl ;) It's always good to know a German has your back by the way. They show some terrifying loyalty....or did at one point in history. I thank you again very much, you are much too kind to me!

Mark: Nadia, you are far too kind. As sweet as you are beautiful. And with all due respect to everyone else who has commented, can I just say that your feedback means so much to me. You know how nervous I've been about getting my own music out there, so to know that you like it makes me smile so much - I'm so glad you liked it. Thanks so much, beautiful. Mark says: "Evening all. This is the second song of my acoustic sessions, and although it's not exactly up against any stiff competition yet, I have to say it's definitely my favourite. I wrote this when the tour rolled into Germany, but I came up with the concept aboard the 14 hour flight that brought us here from Melbourne in Australia over the weekend just gone. It was a result of my having very little to do except look at Twitter and see what the celebrities of the world were up to. This is the result, and it's basically some sort of critique of the way celebrities conduct themselves and what, I suppose we, as a collective, look for - I'm not even excluding myself from this. The song is sort of a parody of what we want in life. You can be the purest artist on earth, making your songs for yourself without any want to be famous or rich, but the second you get a sniff of fame and fortune, it becomes a different beast. This is basically a look at the way we all battle to be the one who gets noticed - to be the top dog. As musicians, and I guess as celebrities as a whole, we rely on fame - it's like our lifeblood, and in the world where social media has become one of the most important ways to stay relevant, the fight for fame and attention has become so much more intense, and even more necessary than it's ever been before. So yeah, I wanted to pen a track that looked at desperation for fame, the fight to be noticed and the need to be more famous than the person that came before you. In a way, I'm experiencing it on a far more personal level than I ever imagined I would at this very moment, although the less said about that the better, to be honest...haha. Musically, this is something different again, and it was something I wanted to reflect the sort of fast pace of life as a famous person and the frantic nature of trying to remain relevant in a pacier and far more fickle world than we've ever had in the past. Whereas the first two songs I've done as a solo artist were quite slow and measured, this one has a bit more of a high tempo to it, and it sounds a lot more scathing with it, which I felt was quite appropriate in relation to what the track is. Again, I had a lot of fun doing this - I'm loving doing my own music, and I definitely feel totally at home as an indie artist. This was great to write and record, and I almost want to get back on the guitar right now. But that's all from me for now. More soon, ladies and gents. Adios. Mark(us)."

Track: highonlife.
Genre: Indie
Length: 4:57
Artist: Mark Talley
Recorded: Frankfurt, Germany

Sounds like

I'll take my chance on a fight for the top spot,
It's dog-eat-dog and the world will never stop,
Stand back-to-back with your pistols drawn
Take ten steps and pray you'll see dawn
Never looked like you were set to leave
I've poured you a nightcap, awarded reprieve

But she's still giggling, thoughts in the air
Eyes dyed blue, is that even your own hair?
Dancin' on your stilts with your head held high
How do we all look from your throne in the sky?
Gimme a flame, cos I wanna spark something bright
This isn't a game, ring the bell, it's time to fight

The beauty queens and lovers wandered into the square, a marketplace
to cast another shadow puppet
The talentless and desperate took a shine to your lair, down on their
knees, given life to a muppet

I'm high on somethin' but it's not what you're thinkin'
I ain't paid for nothin' and I'm not even drinkin'
Not looking for love, but I'm here for the attention
Hashtag, I'm on trend, no time for a mention
Still in short pants but you're on a race to a headache
Your impact's seismic, love, a disaster, an earthquake
I'm the judge and the jury to your social disgrace
Now allow me to throw the Book at your Face

Chalk up another one a notch on the bed post
Getting nowhere without a blowdry and a spitroast
As fast as you're up, keep your feet on the ground
Gravity's a goddess and we're all heading down
Take another hit put your head up in the clouds
Resurrected so fast they'll give you your own shroud

This is an incentive to centre your options
Put your tits on display, vrginity to auction
Your innocence spoiled by the glitz and the glamour
Brought back to earth with the back of a hammer
Eyes so dead and your lips have gone cold
But that won't stop the kisses til your act gets old

Made up, dressed up, fly towards fame
How long til you do the next walk of shame
Eyes filled with hope and a trust for the pack
The wolves who are happy to swarm and attack
Will I get shut eye and a chance to breathe easy
Or am I just another zombie with a virus, sleazy?

I'm high on somethin' but it's not what you're thinkin'
I ain't paid for nothin' and I'm not even drinkin'
Not looking for love, but I'm here for the attention
Hashtag, I'm on trend, no time for a mention
Still in short pants but you're on a race to a headache
Your impact's seismic, love, a disaster, an earthquake

Erica: you're a sly rox, mark. Who knew blood of wecz was holding onto one of the best song writers ever? Though for the record,my tits have never been on display...well,consciously at least.

Nina: first she has to grow some, love. Then I wager she'd never get them out of everyone's face.

Ryan: Fucking A. This song screams festivals. It's such an anthem. Its a refreshing approach to lyrics, you've got that 'I don't give a fuck' attitude, which I love. Plus, any song with the word muppet in it is a winner. I have heard a few of your unreleased songs before, but this is an early standout for my favourite.

Honor: There's Mark Talley and then everyone else. Congrats, you just shitted on everyone else in 3 songs (including your Silver Linings debut).

Mark: Had to keep it tucked away all these years so I didn't overshadow his lordship, ya know? I'm joking, of course. Thank you, though. That is far far too kind of you. And I believe you, entirely, Ms Kobayashi. I imagine there are some things you have to keep for the wife, eh? ;)

Harsh, Nina. Funny though, haha.
