It hasn't been too long since iconic girl group GirlSpice dropped their latest #1 album Make a Scene, but it appears the girls seem to be more interested in their own lives these days, what with Nadia Berry hurrying onto announce her own album, and now Sophia, who's surprisingly dropped a brand new single out of nowhere. Perhaps the passion is no longer in the group, and is now just used as a mere marketing tool to get their own names out there to promote their own stuff. Whatever the case, it looks like GirlSpice's lovable ditzy blonde is back with a new album of her own on the way, following on from her critically panned debut The Beauty Within. Despite having a catchy song or two, most critics slated the star for lack of depth and generic dance tunes. Surprisingly, the album racked up sales of over 1.7 million worldwide, possibly down to the die-hard fan base GirlSpice have formed over the years.
However, that hasn't stopped Sophia returning with what seems to be her most brash, eccentric dance song to date, and seems like something that would have fit nicely on GirlSpice's most recent effort. Whether it's a reject from the album is yet to be known, but it's a notable step up from her last album, so it's enough to impress us. With its pulsing synths and huge bass drops, "Handle It" is far from what most would expect Sophia to release over the holiday season, compared to last year when she released Christmas song "Warm You Up". However, it comes at a perfect time for the upcoming New Year celebrations, because we can certainly imagine this track playing in clubs all over the world. Sophia's name may be on the track, but don't let that fool you, it's a great club song that shows you Sophia definitely knows a thing or two when it comes to putting out a pop song. We think she's an evil genius behind that facade of hers.
Vocally, Sophia has never been one to impress and is often considered the weakest vocalist in GirlSpice, but at least she knows it. She's never been the type to go out of her comfort zone vocally, and that's okay, plus much appreciated. I doubt anyone would want to hear her attempts at an Alicia Lena classic, and you certainly won't hear that on "Handle It". She presents the lyrics in a half-talking-half-singing style and lets the beat to the track do most of the work, which probably means more hate from pretentious music critics, but if you're an avid pop fan, this one won't disappoint you.
