“As a rule, the winner’s single from the X Factor is usually an extremely predictable and easily digestible song. This year it’s only partly true, yes the song is very easily digestible but the song choice however is slightly more unpredictable. The fact that this group of four lads from the south of England have chosen to cover a high-pitched electro-pop song and turn it into a pop-rock anthem is a pleasant surprise to those of us that have been disenchanted by the X Factor product for many years now. But they have done something a little different to the mould and expectations, boy bands are tailor for ballads and that would have been the obvious direction to go in with the winner’s single for ‘RADIO:ACTIVE’, but instead they have attempted to break the mould somewhat, let’s face it … their song choices on the show were often unexpected, (Love On Top during Beyonce week, anyone?). And this appears to be a recurring thing for the lads, it’s obvious that they will have always gotten the young female vote, but also their use of ‘real’ instruments showed a side that X Factor usually avoids.
Nevertheless, the track that they have decided to release is very easily digestible, it’s catchy chorus is one that will be struck in your head for days and therefore you will find yourself thinking, “Turn this crap of already”. But the fact is that on one or two listens, this is a very good winner’s single and it may have given the talent show the change that it needed. 2014 could be a very big year for these four young men”
