OOC: Precisely my thoughts. Great to see you back. Loving the new FC.

Vin: This is fucking great. I was afraid 2014 would be a drought for great rock music, but now I have restored confidence. Its brilliant to see your name around again, my friend.

Ryan: I look forward to seeing what comes out of Jason Smith's latest project. This is one man I didn't think we would hear from again in the industry. Nice isolated cabin beard you grew out there too.

Jason: Hey, I thought the beard was quite a nice touch personally! Thank you both very much, it means a lot that you two still remember me and stuff, considering that you're two of my favourite artists and I would consider you both friends of mine. And yeah, I miss Eric so, so much. Barely a day goes by where I don't think about him.

OOC: Thank you both! I don't really know EXACTLY where I'm taking Jason yet, so I can't wait to see where he ends up either

MISSION STATEMENT

Hey it’s Jason here. I am aware that I have a lot of questions to answer and a lot of problems that need addressing that I have sort of neglected over the past year or so. Some of these I will have to deal with in private but some of them I hope to be able to answer right now. The reasons, or excuses rather, why I had to leave are complicated but I will try to talk about them as clearly as possible.

I think the first thing I need to discuss is why I left everything behind; my perfect life and perfect family. To be frank, this is out of a mixture of cowardice and drug addiction. I don’t think I was ever ready to be a father, or maybe even a husband at all for the simple fact that I can’t handle stability; it just doesn’t make sense to me. Above all, it required me putting something above music, which is something that I never ever wanted to do but was sort of thrust into. Obviously my children mean a lot to me (despite what you may want to believe) but I am, at heart, an extremely selfish man and I essentially just could not bear parting with my music even if it means I have to endanger or destroy the lives of others. I grew bored and increasingly villainous as time went by. In addition to this, I was still addicted to heroin at the time, although I had lied about it to pretty much anyone. You have to give me credit for this; I am a pretty good actor, I had you all fooled into believing I was clean. I genuinely am clean now however; I discovered that if you truly put all your energy into making music, you don’t need any other drug. One final reason to explain my absence may just be that I’m completely fucking unpredictable due to my bipolar; I think Eric’s passing may have just tipped me over the edge. I certainly haven’t been the same since anyway.

The next thing I need to explain is exactly where I have managed to hide all this time. As some have noted, I have grown a rather noticeable beard which has disguised me throughout, so keeping my identity hidden wasn’t really that much of a problem, I just had to find somewhere to go. For the first few months of my absence, I fleed the ranch I was residing at in Texas and hopped over to the wild bayous of Louisiana, staying in a small cabin with an old friend of mine who schooled me in the art of Cajun music. The landscape heavily inspired my new album, and elements within it such as the presence of accordions and the odd fiddle. I occasionally visited New Orleans to get some supplies, and some musical instruments to write songs on and I quickly fell in love with the city and its fascinating musical heritage. So then on after I lived in a flat in the French Quarter of New Orleans, and started to reconstruct my life a little bit after I had sort of disintegrated it. It was a very exciting time of my life, but one that had also brought forth tragedy. It had been a while since I’d heard from my friend, so I decided to go back to the bayou and visit him. Upon arriving, I had discovered that he’d overdosed on heroin; seeing his limp, pale body in death is what made me finally decide to kick the habit once and for all and, thus far, it has been relatively successful. His death also accidentally inspired the rest of the songs on my new album, as strange is it may seem. Death is a surprisingly good catalyst for creativity. I moved up to Nashville after this to rent out a studio and finish the recording of my album, and that is where I currently live.

I learnt many lessons from my time away, the most important of all being that I can’t really handle much human contact at all. People around me either end up dead or seriously damaged and that’s something which I never set out to do. It’s understandable that people want their rockstars to have relationships and mingle, go out drinking and taking drugs and the like; it makes them seem more human, like anyone could be a rockstar if they tried. But that isn’t something I want to do anymore. I want to transcend this, for my music to be music that I want to make, not something that appeals to the hoi palloi just for the sake of appealing to the hoi palloi. I don’t want to be Mind. I don’t even really want to be Jason Smith. I just want to be a musician. I want to create an album that defines an age, I want to influence generations of young musicians, create a new genre, and be an embodiment of music itself. This will obviously be difficult, but I’m going to give it a good fucking go. Being remembered for having large hair (which is admittedly something I perpetuated) and making “totally epic” masturbatory progressive metal music is fun, but it isn’t something I can be proud of. It may pain my fans to hear, but that’s not the person I am anymore, at all, and that whole thing bores me now. Jesus, I'm pretty much 30 and I'm still not really satisfied with anything I've done. I want to make something that people will speak fondly about over the ages, a musical zeitgeist, and I won’t stop creating until I achieve that. It’s why I came back.

Happy new year everyone, and sorry I was away for so long.

Jason Smith

More news to come soon.

End transmission.

Okay I couldn't wait. I'm gonna give you a little teaser of a song from my upcoming album. The song is called tentatively "Swamp Song" and yeah. These are just the lyrics, I'll be releasing the actual song at some point in the next few days.

Enjoy.

Jason Smith.

Swamp Song
I lie here then I’m gone, I slumber,
In a horseshoe formation, a horseshow a light in the darkness,
Lying to shed some light on this situation,
I know that you’re faking the reason, I know you don’t wanna go,
And maybe I’ve been being too harsh lately,
My mind changes like the season, or maybe more like a month, I dunno.
If words do not harm then how comes I feel like I’m having to cover up bruises?
I wear my heart like a sweater, when I’m talking to you.
Your love bites are still warm on my neck, they’re warm like the waters,
Whatever, I don’t know.

But babe I’m not stubborn I’m only tryna shed some light on this situation,
I get kinda funny when I’m talking to you.
And why do the flies come out when it’s dark, and sleep in our mouths,
And light all their lights by the bayou,
It gets distracting when I’m tryna talk to you.

Lay me down, father.
Lay me down, I wanna go to sleep.

Lay me down, father.
Don’t let me down when I’m tryna talk to you.

It’s like a diamond cocoon you tie me up in,
But I hatch into fireworks, I just wasn’t made for this world.
Maybe nature’s just playing with me, I’m it’s toything and it’s teething,
On the marrow of my very soul,
Or maybe I shouldn’t try to talk, maybe I should just shut up,
Maybe we were never made to be,
Maybe it’s convenient for convenience sake, maybe I love you,
Maybe I don’t, what do you think?
Maybe I’m there, mon cher, my love, my dear,
Maybe I’ve a long way to go,
I can’t really be seen to talk if I don’t know.

Lay me down, father.
Don’t let me down when I’m tryna talk to you.

I try to do the best that I can, I try not to fuck up,
It might lead you to seeing me fuck up again,
I try so hard and it’s to no avail.

But maybe you wouldn’t mind seeing me so fucked up,
I fucked up,
If it ever meant that we could fuck again,
I know how much silence turns you on.

UNCANNY VALLEY
THE NEWEST ALBUM BY JASON SMITH COMING SOON

"The uncanny valley is a hypothesis in the field of human aesthetics which holds that when human features look and move almost, but not exactly, like natural human beings, it causes a response of revulsion among some human observers."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNdAIPoh8a4

This album is the musical version of this phenomenon. It is something which appears to be human, but not quite human enough and, likewise, it has a sort of revolting beauty in how alien and how completely and utterly unnatural it sounds. Uncanny Valley is such a radical departure from my previous work that it is impossible to compare; there is very little similar to anything I have ever done before. I have explored metal and rock to the best of my abilities and now that period of my life is over so, as a result, this feels more like a debut than anything. It is time to stretch out my wings and go into a dark, unexplored place musically. Imagine something sort of like musique concrete, psychedelia, 20th century minimalism and electronica meeting at a circus after it's closed and everyone has gone home and you will have some sort of idea as to what this album sounds like.

TRACK LISTING
1. Swamp Song (6:49)
2. Battle Flavour (6:04)
3. Tonguebird (4:55)
4. Lemony Ripple (7:10)
5. Is a World (3:21)
6. Madame Fire (9:45)
7. Oymyakon (6:48)
8. There Yonder (3:20)
9. Red Elv (3:18)
10. You Hurry Past (3:37)
11. Baltimantra (Using Hands as Fingers and Vice Versa) (5:52)

So yeah, the first single will be released at some point in the next few days. Hopefully. I dunno. Anyway, let me know if there's any tracks that particularly look exciting to you or whatever.

1. Tonguebird (4:55)
2. Tonguebird (acoustic demo) (5:19)
3. Tonguebird (noise mix) (14:03)
4. Tonguebird (instrumental) (4:55)

Music:

A layer of ambience is cut through by a solid, simple rhythm on the drums with a lot of echo and delay making it sound very spacey and rather futuristic. Occasionally, during this intro, a sound which can only be described as sounding like someone tearing a piece of metal juts into the frame for 1 or so seconds before quickly receding and resuming back to the ambience and the drums that were before. After 2, short rounds of this intro, a synth and a guitar come into the frame and start playing the main melody of the song, which is tense and unusual, sounding like a mixture of “Teddy Bears Picnic” and early 90s alternative rock music, like one of the catchier melodies by Pavement or Weezer. The melody gives off an uneasy, almost creepy vibe and sounds quite robotic, despite the typical Jason Smith ambience that backs the repetitive, mesmerising drum beat and distorted guitar line in the background. This simplicity sets up the basis for almost the entire of the song. The melody is extremely catchy, despite its oddness and uneasiness, and will soon worm its way into your brain. The lyrics eventually come in after a while of the melody being played, and Jason sings it in a relatively high pitched voice, with the words being accentuated on every note of the melody. Echo plays a huge part on this song, and that is also evident with the effect it has on Jasons voice, which is distorted almost beyond recognition. It makes him sound like he’s trapped in space or underwater, and the desperation with which he sings the lyric only seeks to perpetuate that. The chorus provides a slight change of melody, with it becoming upbeat for the first couple of lines, before eventually delving back into the normal melody of the song. After the first chorus, a swirling synth sound can be heard in the background and the initial synths playing the melody are brought further up into the mix so that they are now louder than the guitar. In the background, very distantly, Jason can be heard to squawk “stave!”, but not in a typical rock or metal style. It sounds like a genuine cry of anguish and humanity, which contrasts with the nature of the song.

For the second verse, the melody continues as usual, with more and more layers of synth being gradually introduced at a higher octave, to make the song sound panicked and dynamic. However, on this verse Jason sings in a slightly lower pitch and a little quieter in the mix as well, making it sound as if it’s the result of speaking after you cry or something. The vocal melody is also different; Jason sings far more quickly and fits more syllables into each run of the melody. Things return to normal with the chorus, which is exactly the same as the first one, with a slight hint of accordion now gracing the background far into the mix. The only true melodic change in this song comes in the bridge, where the synths play a low drone as the guitar slowly plays a worn out arpeggio, which could almost be seen as a parody of Jason’s earlier work. Vocally, it returns to the second chorus, except even lower pitched, and with Jason harmonising with another mix of himself, making it sound eerie. After this bridge, Jason does one more cry of anguish and horror, which is far more audible this time, and it returns to the melody and then one more repeat of the chorus. The last segment of the song has Jason quietly mutter-singing words to himself quietly, for the first time, in a non-echoed voice as the synths play the rest of the song out and it fades back into the drums that introduced the song, before ending with an echo.

Story:

"I first had the idea of Tonguebird after I quit drugs, which is unusual, because it sounds like one of the more “trippy” songs on this record. I was living in a small apartment in New Orleans at the time, and it was carnival season, you know, mardis gras and all that. I wanted to go out and celebrate with other people but I was too anxious that someone would recognise me (as arrogant as that may sound) and, you know, report me as a missing person or whatever and that I would then have to be made accountable for all my actions. I could see all the celebrations occurring from outside my window, and it pained me not to be able to join them. I wanted to celebrate. I wanted to go out again without fear. That sort of inspired the music of this song, which sounds paranoid and conflicted, and very distant and afraid at times. It builds up to a crescendo, before eventually fading away, and that essentially represents me taking my meds and calming down, going to sleep. I only had the most basic of utensils to create this song, which is why it is so minimalistic. The original demo was just a guitar and synth. I added some sampled drums, and an accordion here, but aside from that, it remains almost exactly the same as how it originally was."

Production:

"I opted for a minimalist approach to this song, so it would allow the listener to create their own stories and space to go alongside it. As I have mentioned, there are only about 4 instruments here, and all are either played or sampled by me. The vocals are still the same as the day I first recorded it; it captured an intensity of such magnitude that I couldn’t bear to rerecord it. I did, however, have to distort the vocals so it would go with the rest of the song. You can hear me cry occasionally during this song and those are genuine screams of agony, on the day that this event happened to me. I left it in because, obviously, it sounds pretty damn intense and also to parody those who just want me to do screamed vocals. Here, here is your scream. Now shush and don’t complain. The guitar was a typical electric guitar that was so generic; I’ve forgotten the name of its make. All the effects were done post-recording which is why it sounds so unique and full of distortion. At the time I couldn’t find a drummer that I thought would add anything productive to the song, so I just sampled an old African record and added a shitload of echo to that and, voila, you have a song."

Lyrics:

Is it wrong to fly with the tonguebird?
Spitting prose onto those unconquered?
All the little people they look like ants,
All the little people want me to make them dance.
Don’t treat me like I’m not always there,

You can be certain I will watch from afar,
That doesn’t mean I’m always there,
I’m human simulacra,
I’m simulacra.

(Stave!)

I don’t wanna be the dots on your painting,
I always admired the simplicity of the framing,
You can lock me away and throw away the key,
But you know that it’s difficult to keep away from me.
Face.

Don’t treat me like I’m not always there,
You can be certain I will watch from afar,
That doesn’t mean I’m always there,
I’m human simulacra,
I’m simulacra.

Stave me,
Pierce my heart with your own,
For it is sharp and misgrown.

Stave me,
Put me off, I’ll go home,
Just please don’t leave me alone.

YAH!

Don’t treat me like I’m not always there,
You can be certain I will watch from afar,
That doesn’t mean I’m always there,
I’m human simulacra,
I’m simulacra.

I’d advise you not to take things so seriously,
It’ll damage you in the end.
I’d advise you to drop the ball and stay with me,
Before I break and bend.
I’d accept if I were ugly,
But I know I’m so pretty,
I’m so pretty damn ugly,
I know that I will fade.

Lyrical explanation:

"The lyrics here are a reflection of me coming to realise what my fans truly made of me. They only know a media projected version of me, and will either love me or hate me based on that. Some of these lyrics may seem like they’re written to one particular person, but they’re not, they’re a call to everyone to sort of… I don’t even know, I guess I’m just trying to say that I’m dissatisfied with how I’ve been portrayed in the media. I deserve some of these portrayals, but it really gets me down sometimes. The first verse is, obviously, me telling people that I’m here to satisfy my own needs, not theirs and that I’m not going to make music solely for them, I will make it according to how I personally feel. Yes, there is a sense of egoism with me saying that everyone “looks like ants”, but that’s the character I play throughout the whole album, one of immense pretension and delusions of grandeur. It is only fitting that, after that verse, this façade breaks down into sadness and pleas for help. The last part of the song is of particular interest to me, because I wrote it stream-of-consciousness. It’s a war between part of me saying “yeah I don’t deserve all of this crap” and part of me saying “wait I’m a totally shitty human being” and eventually coming to the realisation that, if I don’t address these problems soon, I will just fade into anonymity and nothingness. So yeah, very happy."

Sounds like:

OOC: Great job with this, I actually understood it very well :) It's very well written, especially the lyrics and the meaning.

Pixie: I absolutely adore this, Mr. Smith. You know sometimes I think people don't know whether to think our songs are what we think of ourselves or if we're just playing a character for that particular song or album, and then we get put into this box of who people think we are. I think this song is marvelous because most will think just what you said, that you're being cocky by referring to everyone looking like ants but that's the beauty of a good song. It's all about interpretation. I personally do not know you but I don't think you're a bad person at all. The media definitely makes some look like monsters and the monsters like saints.
