"New Year" is a song written by rapper-songwriter/recording artist Sonyae and Perry Stone and is performed by R&B artist Alicia Lena and Sonyae. The song was written and recorded in late 2013 by the two at Avatar Studios in New York, New York. The song was produced by label co-owner and producer George King, who have produced hit songs for Teen Titans, Joey, and Serenity Scott in the past. He also worked with Sonyae herself on her debut album "Pinkprint" which was released worldwide on December 22nd, 2013.
"New Year" is of the R&B and hip-hop genres and uses elements of pop and has a 'drumming' beat to the song - perfect for a fierce anthem. Lyrically, the song is about pushing forward in life and during the new year. Both Alicia and Sonyae intended on putting together an inspirational song about aiming for the positive energy rather than the negative. The song means absolutely nothing more than to let go of the past and aim for the better in the new year.2013 has been different years for both artists Sonyae and Alicia Lena. Alicia have not released any new material since 2012 when she released her sophomore studio album Reign Over Me which topped the charts worldwide. New Year is the first time we heard her golden voice on a record since then. Meanwhile, rapper Sonyae on the other hand recently released her debut studio album Pinkprint on December 22nd, 2013, which scored three top five singles since its release thus far. Nonetheless, the two urban artists joined forces to create something spectacular and phenomenal and we certainly never heard of a single like this before - at least not recently.
During the last quarter of 2013, Sonyae was unexpectedly one of the few urban artists who've dominated the urban scene. Other urban acts that reigned within the urban communities were Kidd Amaze, Aubrey Mikkel, Liyah, Lotus, and Rum & Coke. During that same quarter, Sonyae was steadily breaking records. She became the first artist to have four appearances in the top 10/20 of the Digital Chart simultaneously. To add to the list, she also scored four consecutive top four songs on the chart, one going number one, and three consecutive top two hits on the Airplay Chart. Although she only marked her debut during the last three months of 2013, she enjoyed success. She placed herself within the top ranks of the urban world and with this song, she solidifies her position within the top ranks. Last year was a proud year of hers, but with more releases like this, this year can be even prouder for the rapper.
Alicia Lena has made a significant impact in urban music and in music in general! With hit albums under her belt which includes her 2011 debut album Waking Up and 2012's Reign Over Me which have earned multi-platinum certifications, she's proven to be a force not to be reckoned with in this industry. She has a countless amount of classic hits under her belt. 2013 was just a vacation year for Alicia however. But she's back and she's back with a force with Sonyae. However, we aren't too sure on whether or not Alicia will be releasing an album this year. Nonetheless, we're too focused on hearing her voice on a new record.
The two couldn't have been any fiercer and couldn't have made this song any fiercer either. This is more of a different piece of music coming from both artists, even though Alicia Lena's very own Drop The Needle and Pray which was one of the many hits of hers in 2012. Together, Alicia and Sonyae blends together extremely well. With Sonyae's quick delivery flow and rhymes and Alicia's mind-blowing vocals, it's undeniable that the two fit perfectly together. Not to mention, the concept of the song is flawless too. New Year is the best single to kick of 2014 and every upcoming new year and it definitely has heavy potential to become one of the highlight singles of this year.
Alicia Lena, R&B beauty, opens up the track with her flawless vocals singing the opening chorus of the song after the instrumental plays on for a few. Alicia was never the kind of artist who had to use any form of auto tune to make her sound better. She has a remarkable voice and sounds just like her records when she's performing live. She continues sings effortlessly and flawlessly before Sonyae checks in and starts spitting nothing but truth. Sonyae's known to have her wacky and humorous - although still 'tough' - flows every now and then, but on this song she raps straight through in one of her best deliveries that she's offered thus far as a rapper. Alicia then enters the chorus once more and the repeated cycle occurs throughout the second verse as Sonyae spits her bars before Alicia sings the bridge and gets into singing the chorus for the final time.
In conclusion, this song is a highlight in both Alicia and Sonyae's careers. Alicia Lena has racked up memorable hits in the past and this one adds to her list of that collection while this adds to Sonyae's list of hits and is a career highlight song of hers as well. As big as Sonyae has become in recent times, this song gave her her wings and with the support of Alicia, she's undoubtedly solidifies her reign at the top thus far.    Sound Alike:
