Title: "Garden of Love" Album: TBA Label: North Hill Records Release date: February 17, 2014 Genre: Synthpop, electronic Production: mISTER_b, Vanity Lyrics: Vanity
Sounds similar to:
Dropping a brand new single from almost out of no where, Vanity further cements her status as a powerful, eccentric woman in pop music who's managed to rack up hit after hit through melodic music, shocking outfits and iconic performances. It all started back with her very first album Prisoner, a hypersexual dance-pop extravaganza which helped to craft her own unique identity in the mainstream market. Over the years, she's experimented with various different styles and sounds and kept herself fresh in the ever-changing music scene, going from the gothic inspired looks and dark pop music from Vampiric and Dementia to the artist she is today. Vanity's now a fully fledged pop superstar who's last album The Sound of Living broke records for most consecutive weeks at number one, and presented a much more joyful sound to the masses, mixing progressive house into her music, a direction she's continuing to push on her upcoming eleventh studio album with production from mISTER_b and Vanity herself.
"I'm very excited for everyone to hear the album that myself and mISTER_b created together, I really think it's going to blow peoples brains out," says Vanity on their collaboration. "I love to work with the biggest producers out there and bring them into the world of Vanity, a mind frame where we don't think about what's playing on the radio right now and what's going to sell. We communicate with the inner musical senses inside our souls and exhale into sound what feels natural to us. What feels right and what sounds good, quality is always what's key and if I don't like it, then it's likely my fans aren't going to like it. Luckily, myself and mISTER_b were able to really connect on that level and craft something that's unexpected and extremely different. You hear it and you're not sure what to think, at first it sounds like noise, but then you really start to analyse it and appreciate each layer and the beauty of those sounds. This album is complex in that way, where you'll always hear new stuff jumping out of the songs, and I think 'Garden of Love' introduces my fans to this new journey that we're about to embark on."
In comparison to some of the music featured on her previous album, "Garden of Love" has a more darker feel to it and expands on what was previously heard on her Tease EP which was released some months ago, featuring raunchy lyrics with experimental electronic music. Vanity previously stated she wanted to make her own Erotica record with her own twist, and she seems to be fully sticking to that idea with the release of "Garden of Love". The lyrics show Vanity's desire to turn her back to all that restrains her, whether that be people, religion or pressure from being in the spotlight 24/7. "Garden of Love" is a huge release of sexual desire and shows a careless Vanity singing "Turn your back to all that defines you / Just let the garden of love find you" in the song's chorus. The overall feel to the song is very reminiscent to some of her earlier, darker pop music near the beginning of her career, but expands on it with a less mainstream twist, focusing on a harder beat and gloomy synths, pairing up with her sexual lyrics to make for a dark and seductive track that sits well in Vanity's discography.
Vanity's vocals are mostly distorted throughout the duration of the song, adding a slightly mysterious feel to the track, as she delivers the verses in spoken word. In typical Vanity style, she's probably going to draw some controversy from religious groups for lines such as "Jesus preacher, let sex be your teacher", a lyric that'll likely be censored on radio and in TV performances. She follows with "I don't shy away from human instinct / Live my life like the red light district" in the pre-chorus as she embraces her sexual freedom, before the song's melodic, hard-hitting chorus comes in, Vanity singing powerfully over the layers of haunting synthesizers. Following the second chorus is a fitting moment in the song where Vanity recites the William Blake poem, "The Garden of Love". The song's instrumental becomes quieter as a simplistic loop plays, while Vanity presents the poem in an extremely passionate, almost bizarre tone, she moans sexually after and the final chorus leads the song to its end.
Overall, Vanity has given us the unexpected and her die-hard fans will most likely be pleased with the fact Vanity has changed up her sound again and explored deeper into a darker sound with the help of production from mISTER_b. However, in terms of mainstream success, it's hard to predict whether this will alienate the public or if they'll embrace Vanity this time round like they have in the past. It's certainly different to everything on the radio right now, but time will tell whether the risk pays off or not. In the meantime, you can catch Vanity's interview and world exclusive performance of the track next week on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
You can't restrict me cause you can't please me I let nature be what it wants to be Repressed desires and twisted thoughts Won't tangle me up in rules and small talk Bear with me cause I'm walking bare Expose yourself and let your body be shared Woman of a shielded life, say your last prayer
We hide ourselves behind fabrics and insecurities Zippers and buckles and immaturities I don't shy away from human instinct Live my life like the red light district Don't survive the temptation, give into what you're craving I'm waiting and my body's up for taking
Let yourself take whatever you anticipate Pleasure awaits at the open gates Turn your back to all that defines you Just let the garden of love find you And guide you to a feeling second to none We'll unwind as we let ourselves come undone Mouth to mouth and tongue to tongue Turn your back to all that defines you Just let the garden of love find you
Jesus preacher, let sex be your teacher Search within to find your desirable creature Touching with fingers and blushing from whispers Let the inner animal paint your fantasied picture Men in suits and girls in boots Find the beauty in your hidden prostitute
We hide ourselves behind fabrics and insecurities Zippers and buckles and immaturities I don't shy away from human instinct Live my life like the red light district Don't survive the temptation, give into what you're craving I'm waiting and my body's up for taking
Let yourself take whatever you anticipate Pleasure awaits at the open gates Turn your back to all that defines you Just let the garden of love find you And guide you to a feeling second to none We'll unwind as we let ourselves come undone Mouth to mouth and tongue to tongue Turn your back to all that defines you Just let the garden of love find you
I went to the Garden of Love And saw what I never had seen A Chapel was built in the midst Where I used to play on the green
And the gates of this Chapel were shut And ‘Thou shalt not’ writ over the door So I turned to the Garden of Love That so many sweet flowers bore
And I saw it was filled with graves And tombstones where flowers should be And Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds And binding with briars my joys & desires
Let yourself take whatever you anticipate Pleasure awaits at the open gates Turn your back to all that defines you Just let the garden of love find you And guide you to a feeling second to none We'll unwind as we let ourselves come undone Mouth to mouth and tongue to tongue Turn your back to all that defines you Just let the garden of love find you |
