The song is longer, slower, and more of a variation from standard Reported Failure and the album thus far. Full of ambient noise, obsolete arrangements, and a unifyingly haunting aesthetic, the song brings the album in to another world. Lyrically the song has gained controversy since its leak earlier this year. It isn't clear whether Beckett is giving worship or committing blasphemy and he hasn't been specific as to which one it is. Recorded at Sundlaugin Studio in Iceland, "When I Talk To God" sets the tone for where the album will go for the second half. Creating "When I Talk To God" Writing Finally as "Rome" reaches its second half the true theme of the album is brought into light. Why are we here? What is anyone's or everyone's purpose on this earth? It is a question that Billie Beckett has been investigating for years through his music and now with "Rome" he is seemingly building up to an answer. "Really the third section of this album says, if you are reborn and given another chance at this life, then why? what would anyone be saved to do? If we wanted to die but didnt then there must be a reason? If we even ever were born then there must be a reason right?" says Beckett. Thus "When I Talk To God" came about as the first of many songs dealing with this very problem and question. The story of the song really begins with Billie Beckett's greatest trials in 2011. "Darkness" is an album documenting Beckett's fall and attempt to end his own life and thus "Rome" must be his struggle to recover. "In the aftermath of that hell I went through nothing really got better immediately. I had to think and wonder and find my way to get it to be better. That's where the thoughts that became this song began." says Beckett. "I wasn't raised with god. I never found him after I was an adult. But in that moment of terror and of utter personal peril I wanted to believe god to be there and to be real if I only could. That's where this song took shape." As questions built and Billie began writing a coexistent theme arose. "For me god became more an idea than a being. Just the idea that everything would be ok. I think that's the true purpose of what religion seeks to accomplish and beyond that any difference in text and belief seems irrelevant. I wanted to capture that and so I wrote the verses as a way to make the song more about the question of god and searching for that rather than in worship of the god of any specific religion." Beckett wasn't done there. He wanted to still build a hopeful song. A major theme of the album is hope. Thus the chorus came along as well as the line "I fell to love again." "Upon finding my way out of such a bleak circumstance I realized the true power of my will and my strength with or without divine intervention. I realized I had the power to change my life for the better and that I could make a difference and I could be in love and be content. Thus I realized I had to suffer to be in love. I had to fall to love again. The chorus then came along because I knew I had the power to in some aspect be a savior for myself for the people I love and for my son." Recording With such an intimate and personal subject matter, when Reported Failure went in to record "When I Talk To God" they needed to keep a calm, intimate sound. At Sundlaugin Studio in Iceland the band began work on the song in isolation only with producer Avil Hartman and Vin Peters's spouse Elton Walsh. Immediately Vin Peters went to work on the overall tone, atmosphere, and aesthetic of the song. Different keyboard sounds were tested as well as classic guitar ambience. Soon after this work started Peters had the idea of adding a subtle choir. They recorded backing vocals throughout the song as Peters's composition skills were set free upon Beckett's song. Reported Failure's isolation was broken as musicians were brought in. Peters had someone record the same melody with water glasses, even getting samples from an orchestra to mix in. Finally it seemed like the rest of the band's time had come to add what they could to the song. The song for the most part remained untouched after Vin Peters and Avil Hartman had worked on the atmosphere. Matt Collins barely added bass which ended up being mixed more into the background of the song subtly with a more sweet keyboard bass sound mirroring it. There was no room for guitar outside of Vin Peters's random sweet, subtle tone that had already been worked in. Drums were left out completely so as to keep the song calm. With everything worked in just right Billie Beckett added vocals on the last day for recording of the song. In a high voice he sung the song in just a couple of takes adding in more echos and quiet harmonies later leaving the final mixing work to Avil Hartman before the song would be fully done. Finished Product A single soft tone begins striking like the first gleam of an oncoming sunrise. The pitch varies creating a soothing melody. A cool, crystal sound builds the serene atmosphere. Echoing with sincere divinity a choir is barely made out from the background as Billie Beckett, like the sun itself, makes his first appearance in the song. High pitched and passionate he is haunting as a subtle string arrangement begins as if he has shed light upon other aspects of the song previously dormant. The choir stretches ahead of Beckett in pitch as if casting light on the path the sun would take up into the sky. In such a soothing way the song continues. Very quiet bass joins in later. Guitar noise is added but cooly and smoothly not over-driven or dominating. as the warm sunlight of Beckett's vocals continues it casts light farther as melodies overlay upon melodies and all aspects of human emotion seem to be captured in a somber, yet uplifting and chilling and calm joy of the song. It is slower and more ballad-like than most of the rest of the album. Built off of an acoustic guitar track the song is highly emotional. It continues to built the album towards its ultimate conclusion through the rising action. The song is reminiscent of earlier Reported Failure acoustic hits such as 2009's "Hope to Get Out". The song was written by Billie Beckett. It was recorded as part of the Sundlaugin Recording Session in Iceland and produced by Vin Peters and Avil Hartman. Creating "Arctic Stars" Writing "Though many of us love short term adrenaline and thrills, I believe in the long run we all search not for a thrilling, dangerous kind of love even if our love starts there, but for a comfortable, blissfull kind of love" says Billie Beckett in explaining the beginning of how "Arctic Stars" came about. "But in many ways we know that a love like that is hard to come by that creating a clam, safe place out of love is probably the most difficult task most couples will face in their lifetimes and maintaining it after that is just as hard." It was with these types of thoughts that Beckett began writing "Arctic Stars" late in 2012. "THere's something magical about wintertime" says Beckett. "The snow and the cold inspires songwriting in me that no other conditions can inspire. at the same time I was falling in love again and holding a lover through the cold is really where this song came from." Beckett is known for creating a whole image and landscape in his songs rather than a string of angst and blurred or distorted thoughts. He set the song in the arctic as two lovers have just found eachother and made love but the reality that they are freezing in the arctic then sets in playing to Beckett's original thoughts about how difficult it is to create a lasting, comfortable love. Thus the stark contrast of eden versus a frozen tundra was created through the song as Billie pleads that the love he is creating could be pure and everlasting. 'The religious allusions and struggles in this album were already a clear theme and by the time I wrote this song I felt very comfortable with making the contrast between Eden where we could live together content and comfortable forever, and somewhere like the arctic which would be beautiful and wonderful but we would freeze to death there." This contrast dominates the song. It expands the themes of searching and struggling for answers and purpose and seeking a greater meaning out of an ordinary life as Beckett questions which ind of love is best and whether the wrong kind of love could be deadly. Recording "As a band we've always had an emotional, kind of nostalgic connection with acoustic guitars" says Billie Beckett. Some of Reported Failure's first hits were songs built around acoustic guitars. After "Landslide" which was purely acoustic but a cover Reported Failure wanted more songs on "Rome" that were acoustically driven. Thus as they went in to Sundlaugin Studios to record "Arctic Stars" everything started with Billie Beckett and Vin Peters playing with acoustic guitars. With an acoustic backdrop the band worked a couple of demos and then began recording. With a soothing, cool acoustic track building everything the song carried on very naturally and smoothly. "There's something very romantic about building a song, especially a spiritual song like this off of an acoustic guitar. It seems like everything just flows smoothly and beautifully after that and the song is effortless and glorious." says guitarist and producer Vin Peters. Being familiar with eachother and at this point in a recording zen, Reported Failure spent a sleepless night recording. Such a sleepless night worked well. The song was recorded largely from 7:00 PM until 5:00 AM one day. Breaking his normal routine Beckett recorded the song with no break. He layed the final vocal touched on just minutes after the final electric guitar track was added. "As our music has become more spiritual I think the way we make it also has." says Beckett. "I just wanted to keep going and not lose that magic that we had going because it was amazing and indescribable." Thus the song was off to Avil Hartman's mixing before completion. It was released as a single on May 21st. The song was written specifically to only have the basic instruments of a rock band: drums bass and guitar. as recording took place at Sundlaugin Studio in Iceland the band stayed true to that. Lyrically it is about conquering and committing even to the point of death. Continuing with the theme of seeking purpose in life, Beckett identifies love and family as a key part of that purpose. The song is consistent musically with much of the rest of the album and an obvious favorite to play live as well as smart choice for a single. Creating "Frosted Peaks" Writing "One of the most sickening, yet exciting and unmistakably distinct feelings is that of realizing you're in love and not knowing what to do about it." is what Billie Beckett said when we first got to talking about "Frosted Peaks". For Beckett it was falling back in love with the woman he had a child with who had broken his heart but this time committing to her and their family. "I just imagined a mountain ahead because thats what its like to just want to stay in love with someone that it is hard and scary to love so much. That's what its like to just be a man looking at his own future as a father and one day a hopefully a husband and its terrifying but exciting and thats where this song came from." The song progressed from there to encompass an entire image and evolution from just the cool soothing feeling of love and physical bliss to then realizing that there are consequences to that and having to face those consequences. "This song really became about committing to suffering in order to reach something that needed to be reached." says Beckett. From there Beckett was able to do something that has characterized his lyrics since the early days of the band: take a specific concept and make it apply to the general and relatable whilst still remaining specific and personal. The way Billie Beckett did this was through the metaphor of the frosted peak. It became a challenge that anyone faces. Yet not just any challenge but rather the challenge of their lives. As the last verse shows Beckett would be fine to die atop the peak for he had accomplished what he set out for leaving his friends and risking everything. "What I had to reach was a sure love and trust for my family. Because I reached it nothing else at all mattered. Nothing else matters." Recording "For Frosted Peaks we knew from the beginning that we wanted to stick just with the basic instruments of a rock band and just make the best song we possibly could with those options." says guitarist and producer Vin Peters. As recording began it became apparent that Reported Failure could create diverse and haunting style arrangements with nothing more than a couple of guitars bass drums and vocals. Soon the band decided not to really open up the song to the full band immediately as to add the impact when they finally did. "It really just made sense to start with only a guitar to keep the beginning calm and then expand the sound later. I felt like it fit with the lyrics very well." says Billie Beckett. THis meant that guitar was the first instrument to go. Beckett, himself, began working on the tone, adjusting the pedals, and finally finding a clean but slightly crunched tone that fit the mood. A riff was quickly arranged that was catchy and easy to duplicate live. The rhythm guitar draft track was done. After the basic guitar had been added the weight went to Robert Edwards and Matt Collins to build the spine and structure of the song with drums and bass. The best word to define their contribution is power. The two added the power to the song that let it take shape. From there though more pwer even so was added as a slight overdriven rhythm guitar joined the mesh of instruments. All of this layed the groundwork for the vocals and lead guitar to take the dominant foreground of the song. Reported Failure's most outspoken members creatively, Vin Peters and Billie Beckett, take center stage. Vin Peters gives classic Reported Failure fans a taste of the loud, distorted, heavenly punk guitar sound that he is in high demand for. Just a few takes and vin got a guitar track that he, Reported Failure, and Producer Avil Hartman were satisfied with. Finally, it was time for Billie Beckett and the vocal magic that makes him one of rock and rolls greatest modern, contemporary vocalists. He and Matt Collins rehearsed twice to get the harmonies right and one take later the song was ready to be mixed. Finished Product Like steady footsteps on soft, snowpacked ground a simple guitar riff starts the song. Adding personality and tone to this footprint Billie Beckett begins singing smoothly but shyly as if afraid to hurt someone's feelings. Quietly honest he sings over just the guitar. Joined soon by harmonies as if to echo his point the vocals become more of a gospel preaching an unwanted truth. Suddenly drums join in the pounding of a racing heartbeat and the footsteps turn into a jog. Beckett picks up the confidence in his vocals yelling the line "but there's a frosted peak On the path up ahead". Then as he goes into the next line the jog becomes a sprint. The guitar joins in distorted agony like snow being pushed and moved by the new sprint. Bass and drums pound away driving the song forward through the storm. Beckett and Collins both sing with confidence in the fury of hushed desires as the rest of the instruments scream around them. in this manner the song continues in a desperate sprint through all the lyrics finally slowing over the tone of Vin Peters's distorted guitar until it stops. It finally reaches the divine appeal that the past three songs had been building to. At almost seven minutes it is one of the most powerful and emotional songs on the album. With a moving instrumental arrangement that flows and evolves eventually to a full rock and roll, powerful, heavy moment backing him up, Beckett is able to spew the most emotional confessions of longing and reflection upon his past. The song is absolutely an album highlight. It was recorded in May 2013 at Sundlaugin Studios in Iceland. The lyrics were written by Billie Beckett and the song was produced by Vin Peters and Avil Hartman. Creating "Land and Sea" Writing "Love needs so much to last" says a very sober Billie Beckett. "So much goes into it and even then after you seem to have reached the greatest state of love and security with that love there needs to be something more. Some greater power keeping that love going. Maybe that power is love itself and love simply needs to be accepted and nurtured, maybe its just a mutual agreement never to give up. Maybe it is divinity. Maybe it is god. Regardless it needs to be expressed and found." It is this realization that sparked "Land and Sea" for Billie Beckett. For while searching for answers about love and life he realized that even after reaching whatever was meant to be reached there was still more to go. For some time now Beckett has been living in a beach-side home near Santa Cruz, California. He's been seeing his son and her mother Sarah, the girl portrayed so negatively in the band's previous album "Darkness". Thus Beckett has had to try love again and again. "Raising a kid isn't easy. I've had to fight to be a part of his life. Then I've had to fight again to stay there. And through it all I've found the love I lost so long ago. That's where this song started. I need that love. I need it to last and to stay." says Beckett. "So I just started writing about how I wanted love to stay not even knowing yet that I was writing about a higher power than just humans and our lives. I didn't realize then that I was in fact talking not even about love but about our entire meaning and our entire purpose in life." "I was outside my house sitting in the sand when I started writing this song. I was frustrated. So frustrated with everything. The waves were washing up just touching my ankles. Thus I was literally where the land met the sea. That's when I started writing this song." what Beckett would write down in a mere twenty minutes was the perfect accumulation of all the songs he had been working on for months. It was the answer to all the songs about his frustration with love and life and parenthood. THe song was a plea. "It was at that moment that I realized whether you believe in god or something else until you understand that divine power you cant be fulfilled you can only be desperate. So the song became about begging finally for that understanding to come." Recording "This was a song where we had to work hard to make it walk the line between being a layed back, quiet acoustic song and being a hard hitting heavy rock song because really with the lyrics it has neither of those would fit and it had to transcend and not be perfectly defined by either label." says guitarist and producer Vin Peters. This began with finding the right guitar style to go along with Beckett's vocals. The band tried acoustic and electric guitars alike, reverb and delay petals, muted and unmuted patterns, but it was to no avail. "Finally me and Billie just started messing around." says Vin. "Eventually we were just both playing two different patterns over eachother just for fun and I just stopped and said 'That's it.' and we went and recorded a demo ten minutes later." With guitar all but handled the song started taking shape. "I think Vin and Billie with the guitar basically nailed what the song needed to be and from there me and Matt were just faced with the challenge of how to make it more than just a guitar jam without ruining it." says drummer Robert Edwards. The answer was subtlety. The band worked making the song blend well. Recording and re-recording until they felt satisfied. "We managed to make it so that the song sounds much more immense than it actually is. It sounds like there are more than just four instruments being played yet it still builds and flows and isn't just hard-hitting from start to finish." says Vin Peters. With several days of endless work Reported Failure had a song they were proud of and it was ready for Billie Beckett's renowned vocal magic. Starting in the afternoon Beckett layed down one take and the whole band fell silent. "I knew right then that we had not just a great take but we had the next great Reported Failure song." says bassist Matt Collins. By late afternoon Collins had added the harmonies and the song just needed to be fully mixed and just like that Reported Failure was well on their way to finishing their masterpiece, "Rome'. Finished Product Beginning like drops of water guitars play over eachother creating a smooth surreal quality. bass drum thuds joined by a bass itself but slow and mysterious. It is built into the atmosphere though as if it is the shaking of ice forcing the droplets that are the guitar notes to fall off the edge of a monstrously large glacier. Beckett's voice floats in as if from a wind. He sounds bigger than the song itself as if his voice transcends all instruments and lives apart from the song in its own everlasting world. Random echos from the guitar are like random flashes of sunlight or crashes of the ocean. drums still build the steady but quiet greater foundation of the ice. Beckett's voice seems to get closer and more prominent with a god-like presence with all the song built only to compliment and fulfill him. Harmonies come in. Drums build. Bass thuds. Guitar flows. Slowly and surely the dripping quickens. It quickens and quickens and quickens. Then crashing chunks of ice off the side of the glacier as the whole song seems to be surrounded by the water of noise and bass and guitar and drums as Beckett sings in full glory and emotion. The flood commenced and continuing on even after Beckett had left the water rose and flowed and sang in beautiful melody. The most powerful feelings we experience in our lives can never truly be put into words. They can't even be put into lyrics. A melody speaks greater than anything else ever will. Sometimes melodies that are meant to purely express something are twisted to express something else by the words associated with them. These melodies are pure. They have no explanation. They are the feelings I had and that we all had when we went into the studio. They are uncorrupted by words. Their full power is just as it is. The listener may reach whatever emotion or conclusion feels natural from these songs. They represent my enlightenment to me but may represent anything to you." - Billie Beckett OOC: Here is my grand experiment. Please excuse my novice piano playing. The point isn't to make the songs something brilliant. The point is to try something new that I've never seen done before: create actual listenable songs for these artists. So listen and then feel free to tell me how you feel about the idea and the execution of it. The band collaborated with Brandon Caulfield as a producer and guest vocalist to create a fiery acoustic track destined for airwave success. Lyrically the song concludes the album with Beckett applying his "Enlightenment" to his everyday life. The song is Reported Failure's "Call to action". The folk influences and Caulfield's vocals make it one of the most memorable tracks on the album. It was recorded in May 2013 at Sundlaugin Studios in Iceland. As well as Brandon Caulfield, Vin Peters and Avil Hartman also worked as producers. Lyrics are written by Billie Beckett. Creating "Rome" Writing "We had to end big right?" says a joking Billie Beckett. Looking at the band's past albums, he is right. THe band always goes big for the last song. In this case Billie Beckett started with fury. "Think what you will of the album but overall it is about discoveries but mostly personal ones. For the last song we knew we wanted to take those discoveries and revelations and see how they could actually apply in the world." says Beckett. "This started with me just thinking about all that was wrong with the world and all that I wanted in the world. So these thoughts that were happening really at the end of the writing process for this album are what drove the title track." From there Beckett spent a lot of time trying to write the song. "I dont think you can write great lyrics in a studio. Or at least I cant." he says. The result was breaks from the studio. the frontman insisted on a few breaks from Sundlaugin to just wander around the countryside. "Iceland is really beautiful. I think absolutely that recording there influenced the sound of the second half of the album. And in some cases it influenced the lyrics too." Finally for a couple of days while wandering around Iceland beckett had a hook he was satisfied with, and the rest of the song began coming from there. "Really it was easy once I started with something I could work with." says Beckett. "I had been through my own enlightenment, as we'll call it. So really I just had to ask myself how that felt. The whole album is leading up to that enlightenment but this song gets to reflect upon it and say 'what now'. So part of everything was that I resolved that, contrary to popular belief, life is pretty great. Or at least has the potential to be great. but it also has the potential to be terrible. Part of our purpose in this life is to uphold it and make it as great as can be so thats where the idea of Rome came in because it is the most glorified bit of ancient culture yet it fell. Thats where this song comes from." Recording "This song feels like a call to action." says guitarist Vin Peters. "Because of that we knew it had to sound nothing like the rest of the album. We want fans to love the entire album. But we care a little bit less if they love this song. I love this song and we all do. But we mostly care that they remember this song. That whether they enjoy it or not it sticks with them." Part of how Reported Failure did this was by bringing in someone new to work on the song: Brandon Caulfield. The singer-songwriter superstar hadn't worked with Reported Failure before. But quickly they hit it off. "Before we went over to Sundlaugin we just met up with Brandon and had some drinks and talked. By the end of the night we all agreed that we would absolutely like to work with him. He's full of ideas and could bring us to a place musically that we've never been to before." With this in mind, when Reported Failure began wrapping up the final songs of the album in Iceland, they decided that for the title track they wanted Caulfield. Within days he was in the studio. "He brought out the more folky acoustic side of us instead of I guess the emo acoustic side of us." says bassist Matt Collins. Within a day of recording he had Vin Peters, one of rocks biggest guitarists trying to shred on a banjo. Caulfield ended up creating the arrangement for the song. After a couple of demos the band was ready to record. Matt and Robert were first laying down tracks for drums and bass. Then came the acoustic guitar which allowed Vin to play a very hard, fast acoustic track. A professional was brought in to record the banjo for the song. Then finally Beckett and Caulfield started working on the vocals. "I just kind of looked over at Brandon who we didnt really know whether he was just going to produce or not and I just said 'Do you want to sing?'" says Billie Beckett. From there the song took shape with Billie and Brandon harmonizing or switching off vocals. Eventually they found which parts made sense for each of them to sing with Billie singing the more aggressive parts and Brandon singing the softer parts with them both singing the end. Finished Product With the spitting, snarling sound of harsh acoustic guitar the song begins. Thundering bass and drums over the sparks of a banjo join in to the folk-rock storm of powerful, acoustic noise. Beckett's voice comes in like fire spewing a hot rage of malcontent over the aggressive musical backdrop. As the music fades to calm, cool, sustained chords even joined by a piano, Brandon Caulfield begins singing much more softly as the ice to Beckett's fire. In this way the song switches again with Beckett screaming and shouting in the raucous downpour, then Caulfield's composed vocals over the soothing background. Finally they both sing. with the instruments picking up after Caulfield's vocals. The last lines are repeated with both singers harmonizing over the louder arrangement. FUCK YOU. Alright. Here we are, ladies and gentlemen. Reported Failure's Rome. Unless you've been living under a rock, you know all about this album. If you haven't picked up a copy, then you've definitely heard about how cool it is from all your little friends. Let me give you some advice, kid: It's just as cool as your friends are telling you it is. In fact, probably cooler than what they say. I mean it. Album of the year already. What month is it? June? Don't care. Album of the year. Go home, bitches. Reported Failure nailed it. I know, guys. I know what you're thinking. "Awww! But you're Alec Holter! You're not supposed to like anything bleh bleh bleh!" Nope. Shut up. This is it. If Rome doesn't hit #1 for at least four weeks, I'm quitting as a critic. I mean that. But I guess until society as a whole lets me down again, I'm reviewing this. Part 1: Change & Rebirth Yes, the tracks come in four parts. Seems weird, huh? Totally different than anything else? A little unexpected, but not totally unwanted? Rome.general. Part 1 consists of three songs: Days Spent in the Dark, Lunar Utero, and The Day After Forever. These songs are not completely unknown to us. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of these songs were the main reason why you bought the album in the first place. They're great songs. All of them are A-plus-pluses. And depending on which interpretation you take on the album, this beginning could be one of the most important parts. Oh, didn't I mention that before? Yeah. Get ready for Rome to get ten times more complicated: Think of some of the most complex topics that can often be found in graduate level Philosophy classes. Did Plato come to mind? Maybe, reincarnation? Hmm? Yes? Well, lucky for you, all of these themes and more can be found as interpretations of Reported Failure's Rome. Sadly, for most of you who can't think for themselves, I won't be telling you my interpretation of it because 1.) it's time you figured out life for yourself, and 2.) this album is so full of twists, turns, and thoughts that any theory I could give you on my interpretation of it could easily be swatted away by another just as well thought out theory. That's one of the great things about this album: You can sit back, enjoy, and listen to the music, or you can think about it. It's your choice, world. Make a good one. Days Spent in the Dark Anyway, we open this album with Days Spent in the Dark. If you don't already know this song, let me try to some it up for you: Beautiful and creepy. All at the same time. And I don't get creeped out easily, especially by songs. If you have your Rome CD, take it out right now, and really listen to the lyrics of this song. In fact, really listen to the lyrics of all of the songs. The imagery is fucking everywhere, and it is perfect. Lunar Utero Then we go on to Lunar Utero, an equally as known and equally as beautiful song. Remember in Days Spent in the Dark, where all the creepy imagery made you feel uncomfortable, and you just kept thinking, "Well, I'm sure after this song, it'll get a bit brighter." HAHAHA NOPE! Welcome to Lunar Utero, which has lyrics that make you feel just as uncomfortable as the mental image of a lunar uterus does. The Day After Forever And then, the last stop on our travels of Part 1, The Day After Forever. Sounds like kind of a cutsy name, right? Like something Nicholas Sparks would name one of his books. Maybe it's a love song? You're cute. The song, in any sort of interpretation, can be said to be about the afterlife, or at least has some connection to the afterlife. I don't know what Billie Beckett, that tall drink of water, believes in, but he's definitely ringing true to both himself, and to what his audience wants to hear. So good job, Billie. Good job. Your name is spelled the way one of my ex-girlfriends spelled her name. I'll over look that for you. Part 2: Give Alright! Part two! Moving right along here. Part 2 is called Give. Why is it called Give? Fuck if I know. Does it really matter? Not really. There's the beauty of music for you. None of it really matters all that much. Of course, I get paid to act like it does matter, so I guess for some of us, it has to matter a bit. Featured in this part of the album, we have Awakening, Goodbye Innocence, and Landslide. And if you're thinking, "Hahaha, Landslide. I know another song named that," we know, because it's a cover. That's right, ladies and gentlemen: Reported Failure is covering a Fleetwood Mac song. But we'll get to that in a moment. Awkening Awakening starts us off in this part with a darling little piano melody that quickly becomes louder until it's no longer that happy little piano melody, but a full out rock band playing. But such is life. If your interpretation of the album was something along the lines of trying to recover from a mental illness, this song would probably be the song that you would pull most of your arguements from. If anything, we can definitely say that this is one of the happiest songs, but not their best song. There's much more to come. Goodbye Innocence Annnnnnnnnd... the good feeling's gone. Now in the meat of the album, Reported Failure gets back to their sound of pure rock, and gives us another completely interflective and depressing song. Just a few lyrics from this song I would like to impart on you before we move on: Yes, goodbye, innocence / hello, my slow death So... Let's all have that thought go through you for a moment. For anybody who has ever forgotten that we're all slowly dying every day of your life, Reported Failure is here to make sure you never forget it again. Also: I can't wake up some mornings / the legs on my body are weak now / I could crawl away / But I'll stand in honor of my dying breed. That is all. Landslide Alright. Here we are. Landslide. Probably the song that I've listened to the most of this CD so far. I've already admitted to a couple people of how big of a Barbra Streisand fan I am, so I really feel no guilt over admitting how much I enjoy Fleetwood Mac. Especially Stevie Nicks... ESPECIALLY Stevie Nicks. There's something about Reported Failure covering this song and then sticking it into this album that is both SO out of place, and yet works so well. I can't explain it that well. The best I can do is tell you that if you're feeling like your emotions are getting fucked around with, they are, and it's not over yet. Part 3: Land and Sea Part 3, ladies and gents. Part 3. Also, our longest part, which probably means that everybody is going to have to do a lot more thinking when it comes to these lyrics. Are you ready? Yeah, me neither, but here we go. In Part 3 we have When I Talk to God, Arctic Stars, Frosted Peaks, and Land and Sea. Sounds like a fun time. When I Talk to God Okay, so I think at least most of us vaguely remember when this song was leaked, and nobody really had any idea what the fuck was going on with it, right? Well, here it is on the album. The fact that the song is now on an album really doesn't clear up that question, but I think it makes everybody feel a little bit calmer about whether or not Billie might be commiting blasphemy with it or not. I don't care. Rock on. Whatever. It's just a weird song, that's my point. And for the people who were all up in arms over it, just chill out. It's a gorgeous song anyway, so who really gives a shit? Listen to the song. It's very soothing and relaxing. Listen... listen... Arctic Stars For those of you who feel like you can't buy an album unless it has some love song of you and your significant other to call "your song" on it, here you go. You asked, Reported Failure delivered. Your love song. Another gorgeous song for a gorgeous album. We're getting to that point in the album where all the songs are so good that I'm running out of ways to describe them. So here you go. It's the gorgeous love song. Enjoy. Frosted Peaks We all remember this pulchritudinous (I found an online thesaurus. This is a real word. Look it up.) single from not so long ago, and now here it is again on the album. It's odd, but the song actually feels almost like a completely different song when it's put with the rest of the album. Of course, it's not. It's the same song that I've heard overplay on the radio (not overplayed because I don't want to hear the song, but overplayed because radio DJs are paid way too much for how little they do, and if they feel like fucking off, they play the same song over and over again, which is basically what happened here) for the past couple of weeks. It just feels different when you hear everything else. It's like when you hear somebody complaining about somebody, but you don't realize why they're complaining about them until the complainee is in your house, drinking all your wine, and telling you your movie taste is shit. Not that I'm complaining about this song. I'm just, you know... giving a metaphor that I'm sure most people can relate to... Land and Sea Both the title of this part and the title of the song. Magical! I know I've said this a few times before, but this is honestly one of the most beautiful/pulchritudinous/exquisite/foxy songs of the album. It's another song that is so easy to relax to, and yet has a lot of meaning, as all of the songs on this particular album do. The repetition throughout the song really drives the meaning home, and also makes the song really easy to listen to. One thing that sometimes bothers me about long songs that are not as well made as this one is that they get so platitudinous after about a couple minutes in. This doesn't happen with this song. So congratulations, RF. Part 4: Rome Well, my friends and journeymen, we've made it to part four. We've made it to Rome. This last part is definitely the shortest part of the album, with three songs: Enlightenment, Journey's End, and Rome (feat. Brandon Caulfield). The catch? Both Enlightenment and Journey's End are completely instrumental; they're both just a piano. Shall we review them? Let's reveiw them. Enlightenment & Journey's End There are certain moments when a band really becomes something beautiful. Sometimes it's when they're able to sing a capella and still sound just amazing, if there were still a band playing behind them. Sometimes its when they put on that amazing stage show that completely takes your breath away and turns you into one of the teenage girls at the Beatles concerts. And then sometimes it's like this. The final two songs before Rome are both only instrumental, and absolutely perfect. They sound like a sly mixture between Philip Glass type simplicity, yet with the Reported Failure twang of meaning. Both of them deserve standing ovations and bravos. Fantastic. Rome And the last stop on our ride. Well, it's been fun, hasn't it? I think we all learned something about ourselves in this album. Maybe it's that you just don't understand this album. That's fine. The first step is admitting you have a problem. In the Reported Failure tradition, their last song on the album is just as big as they are. And, well hey, Brandon Caulfield is part of it as well. It's a good ending to a fantastic album. You walk away from it saying, "Well, I feel good about what I just listened to," and then maybe listen to it again. Go ahead. It's alright. You can listen to it again. Maybe a few more times as well. It doesn't matter. Nobody will judge you for this. In fact, if you're the first person out of your group to learn all of the lyrics to all of the songs, you'll probably be the coolest, hippest one. So go for it. Dream big. Also... This motherfucker right here. What.

We hope for a nice result there as well. Darkness A year and two days ago we released an album called Darkness. At the time we knew the album would change our careers but we weren't sure how. We now can look back and say that this album brought us to the level we are now and allowed us to make what we think is an even bigger, more magnificent album. Land and Sea - Reported Failure Lyrics by Billie Beckett Production by Vin Peters and Avil Hartman Released on July 16th through Studio60 Records When it comes to rock and roll, no band in recent years has shown more downright, uninhibited ambition than California based quartet Reported Failure. With a recent #1 album ("Rome") the bands story is well known, but with the release of their latest single "Land and Sea" the band again challenge conventional mainstream radio. The standard assumption today is that a pop song will be around three minutes and at most five minutes. For "Land and Sea" Reported Failure double that in a six minute emotional epic that invites the listener along on an immense self-discovery. THough Reported Failure is always relaxed and lacking expectations for their singles, the music industry will be watching "Land and Sea" closely. Reported Failure currently has five career airplay #1s and a sixth would tie them with Riot! in the Boulevard for the rock band with the most #1s since the airplay charts conception three years ago. But at six minutes and forty seconds "Land and Sea" is not considered to be radio friendly by anyone in the industry. The song has no chorus and is simply a string of Billie Beckett's cryptic poetry. Aside from chart success, "Land and Sea" which is the fourth single off of Reported Failure's June release "Rome" has already received critical praise. Max-Volume Magazine said of the song "It is the kind of rock track, shrouded in mysticism and intrigue, that will entertain audiences everywhere and become to Reported Failure what Stairway to Heaven was for Led Zeppelin". Critic Alec Holter said "this is honestly one of the most beautiful/pulchritudinous/exquisite/foxy songs of the album". Regardless of the reception by mainstream audiences, Reported Failure has doubtless chosen another singles that will live in the history of their catalog, and of modern rock and roll. Regardless it needs to be expressed and found." It is this realization that sparked "Land and Sea" for Billie Beckett. For while searching for answers about love and life he realized that even after reaching whatever was meant to be reached there was still more to go. For some time now Beckett has been living in a beach-side home near Santa Cruz, California. He's been seeing his son and her mother Sarah, the girl portrayed so negatively in the band's previous album "Darkness". Thus Beckett has had to try love again and again. "Raising a kid isn't easy. I've had to fight to be a part of his life. Then I've had to fight again to stay there. And through it all I've found the love I lost so long ago. That's where this song started. I need that love. I need it to last and to stay." says Beckett. "So I just started writing about how I wanted love to stay not even knowing yet that I was writing about a higher power than just humans and our lives. I didn't realize then that I was in fact talking not even about love but about our entire meaning and our entire purpose in life." "I was outside my house sitting in the sand when I started writing this song. I was frustrated. So frustrated with everything. The waves were washing up just touching my ankles. Thus I was literally where the land met the sea. That's when I started writing this song." what Beckett would write down in a mere twenty minutes was the perfect accumulation of all the songs he had been working on for months. It was the answer to all the songs about his frustration with love and life and parenthood. THe song was a plea. "It was at that moment that I realized whether you believe in god or something else until you understand that divine power you cant be fulfilled you can only be desperate. So the song became about begging finally for that understanding to come." Recording "This was a song where we had to work hard to make it walk the line between being a layed back, quiet acoustic song and being a hard hitting heavy rock song because really with the lyrics it has neither of those would fit and it had to transcend and not be perfectly defined by either label." says guitarist and producer Vin Peters. This began with finding the right guitar style to go along with Beckett's vocals. The band tried acoustic and electric guitars alike, reverb and delay petals, muted and unmuted patterns, but it was to no avail. "Finally me and Billie just started messing around." says Vin. "Eventually we were just both playing two different patterns over eachother just for fun and I just stopped and said 'That's it.' and we went and recorded a demo ten minutes later." With guitar all but handled the song started taking shape. "I think Vin and Billie with the guitar basically nailed what the song needed to be and from there me and Matt were just faced with the challenge of how to make it more than just a guitar jam without ruining it." says drummer Robert Edwards. The answer was subtlety. The band worked making the song blend well. Recording and re-recording until they felt satisfied. "We managed to make it so that the song sounds much more immense than it actually is. It sounds like there are more than just four instruments being played yet it still builds and flows and isn't just hard-hitting from start to finish." says Vin Peters. With several days of endless work Reported Failure had a song they were proud of and it was ready for Billie Beckett's renowned vocal magic. Starting in the afternoon Beckett layed down one take and the whole band fell silent. "I knew right then that we had not just a great take but we had the next great Reported Failure song." says bassist Matt Collins. By late afternoon Collins had added the harmonies and the song just needed to be fully mixed and just like that Reported Failure was well on their way to finishing their masterpiece, "Rome'. Finished Product Beginning like drops of water guitars play over eachother creating a smooth surreal quality. bass drum thuds joined by a bass itself but slow and mysterious. It is built into the atmosphere though as if it is the shaking of ice forcing the droplets that are the guitar notes to fall off the edge of a monstrously large glacier. Beckett's voice floats in as if from a wind. He sounds bigger than the song itself as if his voice transcends all instruments and lives apart from the song in its own everlasting world. Random echos from the guitar are like random flashes of sunlight or crashes of the ocean. drums still build the steady but quiet greater foundation of the ice. Beckett's voice seems to get closer and more prominent with a god-like presence with all the song built only to compliment and fulfill him. Harmonies come in. Drums build. Bass thuds. Guitar flows. Slowly and surely the dripping quickens. It quickens and quickens and quickens. Then crashing chunks of ice off the side of the glacier as the whole song seems to be surrounded by the water of noise and bass and guitar and drums as Beckett sings in full glory and emotion. The flood commenced and continuing on even after Beckett had left the water rose and flowed and sang in beautiful melody. Amid fighting, Reported Failure has changed. Most recently Reported Failure nearly split up. Bille Beckett departed on a Chris McCandless style journey away from "modern society." The band seemed to be over, but they have opened up in the first Reported Failure interview in over two years. My first question goes to everyone and it is simple. Why are you here? Billie: The short answer. Because of the music. Because I have more to say. Vin: Yeah. When Billie left we had no idea what would happen. The rest of us were sort of in limbo. We thought about other projects and we tried to move on because as time went on it looked unlikely that Billie would come back, but we have been so dedicated to this band nonstop for years that it was hard to find something else. Matt: At the end of the day we really have no real world skills and we've been doing this long enough that its all we can do. Robert: And I've also been in other bands and done other things, but the greatest work of my career has been with these three guys and its hard to move on from that. For the months he was gone we all hoped Billie would come back. Billie, I wont let you off that easy. We have to know, what happened when you were out on your own? What did you do? Billie: What did I do? I wandered. I slept. I met people. I played my guitar a little bit. I searched more for the answers to life's questions and I tried to get away from the things that I despise about this world. I dont know what more you want. Do you want to know where I went? I went wherever the world took me. Washington. I got over to Minnesota. I decided to go South. I got to Texas. That was all within the first couple of months. Well then I actually met this guy who was looking for volunteers for a charity project in Africa. So I joined him and I went to Africa for about a month. You went to Africa? Billie: That's what I said. It was good. It was big. I found some of what I was looking for. I guess, Billie, what I really want to ask is what happened to make you want to come back? Billie: There are moments in our lives where we think what is best os to forget everything. We think what we need is a clean slate and to start completely over. I thought that I had reached one of those moments. But when I was traveling and I saw so many different types of lifestyles and humanity, I realized that my purpose is not to be a martyr for my own malcontent. My purpose is to share what I see and what I feel. Reported Failure has been how I do that. I saw so many things that made me angry or made me happy and I realized that it was selfish of me to want to see these things only for my own benefit. I needed to say something to the world. Billie Beckett looks a little bit different from before he left. He is thinner. he wasn't eating the diet of a modern american while he was away. His hair is largely the same. His demeanor is a bit more intense. He seems less casual. He has a new tattoo on his wrist. It is a vivid, psychedelic looking lion with the word "Babirye" printed on it. The rest of Reported Failure apears unchanged. So how did you come back in to contact with the rest of the band? Billie: Well I got back from Africa and by the time my flight landed I knew I wanted to talk to these guys. Matt: Billie called me up. It was maybe the middle of the afternoon. We all met up at Liberation Records later that day. There isn't much more to it. We hadn't talked to Billie since he left. So did you decide right then to continue as a band? Vin: Yeah. We jammed a little too. This was only a week and and a half ago. one question I'm sure most fans are wondering is whether this will be the same Reported Failure? Robert: I kind of feel like Reported Failure is always changing. I cant say whether from month to month we are ever the same Reported Failure. Matt: Yeah. If you look at our past albums we've changed on each one. Our attitudes as we play live have changed. Our outlooks on the world have changed. Billie: We're still the same four guys that have been in the band for awhile. But I've changed a lot even since our last album. Thematically anything we do is going to be very different from our recent work. Vin: Yeah. I think also how anything we do sounds is related to what it is about. If the lyrics are angry the sound will be angry. So have you already been in the studio? Vin: Yeah we actually booked the studio in Iceland where we recorded much of Rome as soon as we knew we wanted to continue to make music. Wow. So how is your new material sounding? Billie: Heavy. Matt: Heavy and loud as fuck. We've only layed down a couple of tracks but thats the general tone. Vin: On Rome there wasn't really any crazy guitar work; it was more ambient based. That's going to change. So would you say you're working on a new album? Vin: Maybe. We're considering changing how we release our music. We want to reach more people and abandon the traditional record label model. Why's that? Billie: Because its supposed to be about the music. Even though I'm not isolating myself doesn't mean that what I wrote in my letter wasn't true. I'm not interested in supporting the greed that I see in the world. We want to make this music for the people and not for our own benefit or the benefit of a record label. Well you're currently under contract with Studio60 Records. How do you plan to work this out? Vin: Well, were still just out of the gate after deciding to keep going so we haven't quite worked that out. We'd love to work with them because they've been a very kind label to us and they've given us creative freedom over our music. We now, however, also want some freedom over how our music is released. Reported Failure is a forward looking band. I had a hundred questions about their previous work, but the band wanted to focus only on their most recent news and the future. They remain one of the most elusive contemporary bands. The questions of "Rome" will remain unanswered, but the band was surprisingly revealing about their futures and personal lives. Billie, how has taking this leave from the world affected your relationships upon coming back? Billie: I'm still figuring that out. I'm not living in Santa Cruz anymore. I might see if I can get a small apartment in a more rural town. My son went back to Seattle with his mother. I'm going to see them later this week, but that is still a very rocky relationship and I do not know whether anything has changed in these past months for her. My mother was happy to see me. Nothing has really changed with my band-mates. I just feel like I have more inside of me now. I have more radical things to say, so I guess what might change the most is how fans and the world views me. What exactly are some of the things you have to say? Billie: Well I said a lot of them in my letter. I'm going to say more of them with the music were working on. But I'm just very disenchanted with politics and social structure and expectations in the United States. I want to live in a country with a lessened income gap, one where discrimination based on race, or gender, or sexual orientation doesn't exist But even further I want to live where people dont define themselves by what they own or what socioeconomic class they fall in to, but by what they hold within themselves. Reported Failure has always been a little bit political, but I feel like our music is going to become more preachy than it has been before, and I dont know how people will react to that. How much longer do you think you will be together as a band? Some of you have kids and spouses. How much longer is doing this feasible? Matt: Honestly, I think we're in this for the long haul. Robert: I agree. We've faced so many things that should have meant the end of our band, but they didn't. I dont know what more we can face. Vin: We're gonna be washed up and forgotten by the time we actually call it quits. Haha. A low chord joins in all the while the bass thuds on. Voice of a god, Billie Beckett comes from nowhere. He sings as if a preacher and the guitar tone, shakers, bass, and erratic guitar notes are his pulpit. Guitar tones slowly build up as Beckett continues. Hi-hat. Robert Edwards joins the rest of the band. Slow but steady. Every sound is getting ready for something bigger. A slight silence as Billie stops singing. Bass and shakers. Then guitar. Vin Peters thrashes down on his guitar with rebellious tone for a few bars. Robert Edwards beats the drums and compliments Collins's bassline. Billie Beckett joins again. Powerful as always he sings sincerely. Random guitar tone. Four minutes in but Reported Failure is just getting started. Pause. Then crash, thrash, slam, wham, and every instrument goes full blast. Power chords and massive ambient tone. Huge bass, and drums to make anyone want to rock out. By the time Billie Beckett comes back loud and full soaring over the song, it is like the wrath of Reported Failure has been released to reign over the earth. He yells and screams as Vin Peters loses his mind. Screaming guitar. Hammering drum. Dominating bass. Beckett stops and the instruments continue on. Vin shreds the song up and down the neck of his guitar. The chords fade out. The drums slow down. The bass stops. The last screeches of the guitar close out the song. It's great to see that you still have plenty left to say as a band and you continue to re-invent yourself. The lyrics you posted there are looking pretty awesome, the second set of lyrics are interesting, it feels very Americana, I'm hoping that is the direction you lean towards with your next record but whatever you go with, I'm sure will be amazing either way! :)

"On our last album I think people were attached to the sense of yearning that the songs possessed. The beginning was very aggressive but then the middle was so melancholy and full of longing. So when we brought out everything we had on songs like 'Frosted Peaks' and 'Land and Sea' people got it and they felt those songs. Well that's all great. But we've grown now and we want to do it differently. On this album we just want to wreck shit and turn people on from start to finish." - Matt Collins Check out the band's single "Sticks and Stones" Quote: Artist: Reported Failure Title: Sticks and Stones Release Date: December, 8th 2014 Format: Digital Songwriter: Billie Beckett Producer: Vin Peters, Avil Hartman Label: Studio 60 Records Length: 5:33 Genre: Hard Rock "Sticks and Stones" is the first single from Reported Failure's upcoming album "Lie In" Coming after Reported Failure won great critical acclaim, four Goldie awards, and had a string of chart toppers in 2013, the single marks Reported Failure's return to the airwaves at a time when everyone knows who they are, and everyone knows to expect something big. With all the hype around their name, Reported Failure have downplayed their own brand in the album artwork which only bears the title and "RF" in the corner. A creamy red-pink, the artwork is of New York city, but it is almost unrecognizable, etched in to the background, almost crumbling. The artwork reveals where Reported Failure is as a band not quite ready to embrace their day and age. With modern technology and production at their disposal, Reported Failure still recorded "Sticks and Stones" with only bass, guitar, guitar, and vocals. A reverberated guitar clangs a simple chord progression. It is slow and sad. A sneaky lead lick comes in with the lightest touch of "wah" effect on the guitar. Neither guitar parts take up too much space. They are waiting for something steadier to join them. Roar. The bass comes in. Robert Edwards' drumming has always been so confident, and this song is no different. His beat grounds the jamming riffs of Peters and Collins in time with Beckett's chords. The overall effect becomes chilling when Beckett starts to sing in a soft tone. He sounds hopeless. All the while the powerful bass foreshadows the noise to come. Vin Peters' riff too is cunning, giving a sense that something is going on in the dense ambiance of the verse. More voices. Billie is joined for a moment in his passion by the whole band. Stomp on the pedal board. The chorus kicks in to overdrive. What was building subtly in the background has come to a storm of noise as Billie screams the chorus. Reported Failure is coming in heavy and they aren't fucking around. Vin plays a sweet guitar riff over the noise. Matt slams his bass his hard as he can. Robert pounds his cymbals. In this wall of noise, the group loses their shit. As quickly as it started it was gone. The original beat and riff return. Beckett sounds like he is adding more details to a manifesto. This time when the chorus comes Vin is screaming right along with Billie. The overall effect is a madness of heavy noise. This noise continues in to a post-chorus. A fiery tremolo picking joins the guitar thunder. About three and a half minutes in to the song, Reported Failure wont let up. The chords swell in overdrive. The noise reaches a critical mass. "I want you baby in my bones/You make the castle and give the king a throne" sings Billie as the noise fades down. Edwards' drumming is unbelievable, holding the shifts from loud to quiet together tightly. Vin clicks his guitar. Matt's bass doesn't let up. Billie says "Heard the rain is coming, babe" just before the hurricane of fuzz filled guitar and screams and bass and epic drums return for a final time. But Beckett makes the end up the song over the last fading subtle fills from Edwards, and guitar chords. His tone on the outro is defeated, but vicious. Billie Beckett will not go down without a fight. This woman who has a constant presence in the "highways" and comes with a "sting" seems to have inflicted an intense sorrow upon her man. She may be going to tear Billie up, but he finds solace in the fact that he still has "sticks and stones." The sense of despair and hopelessness throughout the song mixed with fury give the impression that his lover has won, but that something violent brews inside the man she has wronged. The lover in "Sticks and Stones" is perhaps not a person at all. The fact that she "makes the world go around" suggests that Beckett is using the lover as a symbol. She is desirable clearly. She wears diamonds. She is a beautiful blonde haired blue eyed woman. But above all Beckett screams over and over "I need her." She is an addiction. "The levees breakin down" is uttered in the background at one point. In a refernce to Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks," Reported Failure are suggesting that the addiction to the "lover" has reached a tipping point. When the levee breaks, and as "the rain is coming" it seems that the possession of sticks and stones may be the only thing that could help save our poor friend.
