"Rumour" is a free digital download from English singer/songwriter Oscar Ward. The track was recorded in London, in Dustyn Blue's attic to be more specific, just last week and is the first solo single we have heard from Oscar and any other Weekend member - 'The Energy', despite having Billy Khan sing the entire song, is still classed as mISTER_b's song. Many have speculated that Oscar would be releasing a solo single after his site received an update almost a year after its launch. The song serves as a little treat for fans who have been patiently waiting for Weekend's new material which is set to surface in spring this year. Despite this free release, Oscar is still with the band and solo material is not a main priority of his.
Oscar has stated previously that he has been working on a few songs of his own and has shown a keen interest in sharing his material with the world. His main reason for wanting to release some solo work is to show that he can do more than jump around a stage and sing pop songs to teenage girls and to also share many personal experiences through his music. Originally, he set out to record a rock inspired album as that is the genre which he loves. However, after a few writing sessions and time in the studio with producer and good friend, Elliot Smith, Oscar was interested in trying out a darker, ethereal sound which would match the lyrics to the majority of his songs. "Rumour" was the very first song he recorded with Smith and being overjoyed with the outcome, the pair worked on many more tracks which are set to be uploaded to his site in spring to coincide with the release of Weekend's sophomore album.
"Rumour" was written after an in depth discussion between Ward and fellow band mate Dustyn Blue (who co-wrote the song). The pair spoke about religious views and how their faiths had been tested along the way. The conversation raised many questions and it became an eye opener for both musicians.
"Dustyn and I were both brought up as Christians although he is....was Catholic and I'm not. We spoke about how we were always told to be the best we possibly can be and that if you are a good person and follow God then good things will happen to you - you'll go to heaven and all that sort of stuff. However, growing older I can now see that that isn't always the case. You can be the sweetest person on earth, loving and caring but that's not going to stop some psychopath from bludgeoning you with a pipe now is it? This song isn't anti-God, I'm not saying that for a second. What I am saying is that life isn't always fair, you don't always give what you get and a lot of people say that life is the most precious gift there is and that it is sacred but I don't think it is. What if you're born into extreme poverty? Born into a war? When you clearly have no hope and chance in life, why are you still here and being tortured 24/7 and waiting on death to release you? I guess I'm just saying that there isn't always a happy ending, there isn't always a light at the end of the tunnel and what might be heaven to some may be extreme hell for others. I admit, this song is rather depressing and I even brought everyone else's mood down when I first played it for them. It was all recorded in an attic, it isn't over produced and it's not a catchy pop song so please don't expected a song in the same vein as other teen boy pop acts."RUMOURWe used to be diamonds buried in the coal, yearning to shine our light, step out into the unknown
It wasn't as magical as foretold, got lost in the blur, too willing to bare our souls
A wise man once brought a gift of gold, a wiser man said all that glitters should not be extolled
We find comfort in the dark yet we're told to seek the light, told to seek the joys in life
I heard that we have the most precious gift of all, so why do so many wish to be released?
I heard that a creator had a plan but this is just one big old disaster
I heard that time's a healer, it will all get better in the future
Maybe that's just a rumour?Lord knows that I've tried to make things work, but I'm shot down, I'm the prey in this deadly hunt
Why does the most gentle touch meet the sharpest claw? It seems like only the good ones get hurt
A thousand hearts break every night, the pain is becoming way too much, it's hard to take, it's so fucked up
Praying to a higher power may be good enough for believers, but who do I turn to when the end comes nearer?
I heard that we have the most precious gift of all, so why do so many wish to be released?
I heard that a creator had a plan but this is just one big old disaster
I heard that time's a healer, it will all get better in the future
Maybe that's just a rumour? We were told to walk into the light and everything will be fine
Don't associate with the silence and the dark side
Yet while step out into the sun, we're left exposed as it shines
We have nowhere to run, have nowhere to hide
I heard that we have the most precious gift of all, so why do so many wish to be released?
I heard that a creator had a plan but this is just one big old disaster
I heard that time's a healer, it will all get better in the future
Maybe that's just a rumour?I heard that we have the most precious gift of all, so why do so many wish to be released?
I heard that a creator had a plan but this is just one big old disaster
I heard that time's a healer, it will all get better in the future
Maybe that's just a rumour?
Maybe it's just a rumour?
I think it's just a rumour
I heard that it's all a rumourCan Be Compared To;
