Single : What Do I Know Artist : Rum (& Coke) ft. Foxxxy & Isaac Lovelock Release Date : January 13th, 2014 Genre : Hardcore Hip Hop Label : Tric Jam , Permanent Reminder Written by : N. Tarantino , L. Fox , I. Lovelock Produced by : NinaT , inZane Length : 4:03
What Do I Know is a song by Cuban-American recording artist, Rum from the duo Rum & Coke , taken from their second studio E.P , Aftermath . The song features additional verses from hip hop artists Foxxxy and Issac Lovelock . What Do I Know was written by Tarantino, Lizzy Fox and Isaac Lovelock , while the production was handled by NinaT and inZane . Musically, the track is a hardcore hip hop song that also incorporates elements of Trap , New Age and space music. The lyrics speak of several topics , starting with conspiracies and somehow transitioning into 'dethroning' basic rappers .
What Do I Know garnered praise from music critics , with the majority declaring it a stand out track from Rum . The song is known as the "return" of Tarantino on the rap scene as seen in the fourth verse of the song . " It's been a minute since I've released a track where I just ... rapped . You know what I mean ? Plus I'm doing the whole singing thing . I don't want people to stop thinking of me as a rapper because that's how I got in the game . So that's what the fourth verse was for . Just to let everyone know that I'm still here and I'm definitely coming for that ass [laughs] . But then at the same time explaining how it's not my main concern like some rappers . " In the fourth verse of the song , Rum makes many points , stating how stereotypical rappers who refuse to be flexible about the topics they rap on make it hard for rappers -- like her -- who try to send a message through their music . The song was also remarkably commended by critics for the clever references throughout the song . For example , some notable people that were mentioned are Fidel Castro , Banksy & Damien Hirst , Tracey Emin and Dwight Howard .
Tarantino had wanted a few rappers to appear on the song , including -- at the time -- label mate Foxxxy . She had stated that she did not think that she could get Isaac on the song , saying " I don't know , to me he just seems so exclusive [laughs] . It's very seldom nowadays that you hear anything from him , but when you do , you know he's putting out straight art . He kind of keeps to himself and doesn't work with everybody and I respect people that are like that . They aren't with the bull or just trying to shove themselves down your throat . They take pride in their craft . " Rum told Hot 97 , " I had hit him up with the first verse and he said 'I like the song, I'm a do it , you can wait 'til Saturday and I got you' and he kept his word ... well not really . I got his verse about a year later [laughs] . But he did get it to me ! And he murked it ! "
The track is a relatively retrospective midtempo ballad that draws heavily from hardcore hip hop . It is also influenced by other genres, such as R&B , New Age, and space music . The "anthemic" features a low-key , atmospheric , and snaky production , accompanied by heavy synths , rough , hard strewn beats and from time to time fast rapping . What Do I Know has been described by many fans as "The old Rum's comeback" , comparing her delivery to that of Rum & Coke's Youtube days . The track prominently talks about how despite of what all 3 of these rappers have been through in life and have managed to come up from , people still doubt their every word and don't believe them when they state facts . This is shown all throughout the song such as the conspiracies Rum talks about in the first verse , the potency of Foxxxy's bars as shown in the second verse , how Isaac proved he never fails to deliver every time he's on a track on the third verse and how quickly Rum can knock people's career's off the top demonstrated by the fourth verse . They then sarcastically dismiss all of these "facts" with the hook , saying things like | But what could I possibly know ?| .
Rum Foxxxy Isaac
[Intro] Welcome to the death row , Where everyone plays the lead role , Where you're forced to walk through a tunnel and fantasize there's light at the end of the road Once you've walked the mile and get close , you realize that the illusion wasn't optical Optical illusions kick in and you find yourself a rabbit hole , Dancing with Alice like life's suddenly became a novel And waking up from your reverie , noticing they've already emasculated So thinking that it'll affect them , you've moronically self-castrated And that's what I call "pulling a Castro"
[Hook] But what do I know ? What do I know ? I've been through Hell and back From scraping up pennies to racking stacks ... then stacking racks Bitches who blew me off , asking me to hit 'em back But I'm too busy for that Too busy spitting the truth and stating the facts But what could I possibly know ? What do I know ?
[Verse 2] So look at you, leading lady, while I'm back on the streets, Try'na find my next meal while you're stackin' retweets, I'm the strawberry laces to your magnum of champagne You're the queen of the gold mine, and I'm top bitch in Brick Lane See Monica Ali ain't got nothing on this bitch You can call me The Artist to your Lilo and Stich I'm the Banksy to your Hirst, I'm Tracey Emin and your cursed Born with raw insight, a mind too fly, Let me show you my worst You askin' what I know, see I'll be tellin' you straight, Better be checkin' your Rolex cos you already too late I've been fightin' my way back from the flames down south Got nothin' to live on but the rhymes in my mouth I'm no fallen angel, but still I'm packin' scorched wings But what do you care, you got your new diamond rings
[Hook] So what do I know ? What do I know ? I've been through Hell and back From scraping up pennies to racking stacks ... then stacking racks Bitches who blew me off , asking me to hit em back But I'm too busy for that Too busy spitting the truth and stating the facts But what could I possibly know ? What do I know ?
[Verse 3] I know that I’m rap-game’s purebred pedigree And I spit the future, so don’t get ahead of me Ice in my veins, and I’m confident steadily With this type of talent, I better be On that Top 10, Chart Heat shit Throw off your game like a shoe that don’t fit And you’re lying if you think this is as good as I’m gonna get I’m like a lantern that stays lit Eternally burning, and endlessly learnin’ So y’all change but I’m as constant as the world’s turnin’ Throw me on a track with Foxxxy and Rum Then wait for the awards to come...
[Hook] But what do I know ? What do I know ? I've been through Hell and back From scraping up pennies to racking stacks ... then stacking racks Bitches who blew me off , asking me to hit em back But I'm too busy for that Too busy spitting the truth and stating the facts But what could I possibly know ? What do I know ?
[Verse 4] Bitches like you make it hard for me to do my work 'Cause you just spend all day rapping about your net worth Which in reality might not even be your actual worth Don't you know that's just Google guessing your salary for what it's worth ? But anyway , I'm too gold for that Originality , bitch I'm known for that Not the type to waste 9 different tracks on the same damn rap Like damn , lil' mama , you know you're wrong for that That's why I'm storming back on the scene like thunder I recommend you find yourself some bars to hide under There's a reason why I got this shit back on it's feet Didn't want to , but I'm about to have y'all bow down at my feet Kiss the Jays , adorn the ring , but make eye contact with the crown and get blinded You say you're on top 'cause you're selling , but bitch I'm not buying it You say you're don 'cause you serve them bars , but I'm the one sentencin' You say you're first place 'cause your running the race , but I'm the only one who's finished it All these hypotheses and you have yet to conduct your experiment Assuming you're that fye when you could just be hot for the minute So before you approach me -- like Dwight Howard -- I suggest you work on them free throws For anybody out there who thought they were royalty , I think you just got dethroned But what do I know ? Pahahaha ... |
