VOUGE: So you’re fresh off the highest rated Super bowl Half time performance ever. Your performance has been critically acclaimed. Highway to Redemption is at 4 million WW after a year, and you’re about to turn twenty five this June. What’s up? How do you feel?

TISHA: Blessed. I feel blessed. There’s no other way to put it. Not many people have been blessed to have done what I’ve accomplished in just twenty four years of life. Not many performers as well. And I am not saying that to sound arrogant. I just work my ass off. I really do. And I want to set a standard, and I feel that at twenty five I can conquer all that my heart desires and my mind feeds for. I feel elated.

VOGUE: Your tour ‘The Highway to Redemption Show’ is coming to an end. But we heard of a possible extension?

TISHA: Yes! Well I guess I’ll spill it now. I’ve toured all over but never in South America, so I’m adding some dates there. My fans out there actually started a petition and sent it to my label [FREEDOM] to get me to come out there. So to South America I go.

VOGUE: Speaking of record labels, what’s the situation with you, FREEDOM, and Studio 60. Are you officially signed to FREEDOM.

TISHA: Yes, I’ve been signed to FREEDOM since last Christmas. Christmas 2013.

VOGUE: Are you still signed with Studio 60. How does that work?

TISHA: No I have no contract with Studio 60. And I am no longer a part of that label.

VOGUE: How does that work because not many artists have gotten away with leaving their label and their contract isn’t fulfilled? In fact The Huffington Post called you ‘unprecedented’ no one has done that and gotten away with it.

TISHA: Well I am signed with the FREEDOM label now but I had what many will call a ‘Freedom’ deal with Studio 60. I am behind everything I do. Therefore I had my choice of singles, the label didn’t choose. I choose the quarter of the year I wanted to release the record [Highway]. I had control over the sound, everything, it was MY project. My contract said nothing of me being obligated to fulfill the agreement therefore I was able to pick up and go. But it just made it easier having my own imprint, ‘Hit Factory Production’, because I am able to exercise that control and I own ALL of my publishing.

VOGUE: What exactly happened with you and Anniken Dahl Smith?

TISHA: I don’t wanna get into much detail about her because I don’t know her. I only know her through my situation. I basically did an article with [Rolling Stone] and I stated ‘I am a modern day feminist’ and she basically got post Vietnam war on me and said I dress too provocatively to be a feminist, those were her words very loosely. And that was the start. So I basically went to the head of the label [Studio 60], Gia Rose-Hilton and told her I felt disrespected that a part of the family I thought we had disrespected me and I gave her an ultimatum. I said she publicly apologizes or I
quit, she never apologized so I quit that night at 12 am. By 2 am I had a record deal, by 6 am it was signed.

VOGUE: Do you hope to inspire other young women and women in general with your boss moves?

TISHA: I mean that was the inspiration behind the decision. Listen, I don’t have an issue with anyone at Studio 60, this is my first interview mentioning them so I am pretty sure they will have something shady to say. But I am not here to tear apart Anniken or Gia, but I have always had a desire to be in control of my destiny, and if I feel you will disrupt me exercising that, then it’s over.

"I rather them label me an arrogant bitch than stupid, broke, and insecure"

VOGUE: What do you say to the people who call you a bitch, big-headed, arrogant, and full of yourself?

TISHA: Well if you label me all those things then you are labeling my fans that as well. I make music to inspire and supply creativity. I make music for my fans to feel confident, so if you’re a fan of mines than your confident in yourself. I rather them label me an arrogant bitch than stupid, broke, and insecure.

VOGUE: You are currently gearing up for the re-release of [The Highway to Redemption]. Why did you choose to re-release the record?

TISHA: I just want something to hold the fans to the next album because it might be a while. Plus it’s a great way for me to release new singles from the five new tracks and singles I didn’t get to release the first go around.

VOGUE: So you will be releasing singles from the new disc and the original disc?

TISHA: Yes.

VOGUE: You recently played our music editor, Barry Winemore, the lead single to the re-release and it is your most personal yet I might add. Titled ‘The Miseducation’

TISHA: Yes

VOGUE: Do you think when people hear the record they will feel you’re talking about yourself?

TISHA: Yes. I mean before the song was even really a song, before it was ever recorded it was a letter I wrote to myself. A letter I wrote to my thirteen year old self in a way.

" Writing “The Miseducation” was a stepping stone towards overcoming the hate I feel or felt rather for my attacker. I really don’t want to hate anyone, that is not my goal."

VOGUE: The song suggests rape or some sort of sexual abuse with the lyrics, “Just as much as you admire the prick who sacked and kept your innocence when you were thirteen”. Are you referring to yourself?

TISHA: Ummm [takes deep pause and looks down for a while]. Yes. Yeah I am.

VOGUE: That is something I didn’t plan on asking or knowing the answer to. How have you overcome your abuse?

TISHA: I’m not sure I’ve overcome it. I will say that writing “The Miseducation” was a stepping stone towards overcoming the hate I feel or felt rather for my attacker. I really don’t want to hate anyone, that is not my goal. I was raped at thirteen and it has been bottled up in me for over ten years. I am a twenty four year old woman now. I don’t wanna hold on to that for the rest of my life. That’s the purpose of the song, to let go. Let go of whatever is making you unhappy, whether its abuse, a job, a relationship, that’s the message. Just to be happy.

VOGUE: Did you know your attacker?

TISHA: Yes he was a family friend, my age.

VOGUE: I am sure this will be another anthem, and a landmark record as far as your personal life ad your career.

TISHA: In regards to my personal life yes. Like I said, the reason why I wrote the song was to let go, to be free of all that negative energy. I don’t care if the record sells. I wrote it for people who have held on to negativity and need to release it, I’ve had successful records before, I did this to be artistic not to sell. I want my music to stand alone.

VOGUE: There are rumors that you’ve started production on your eighth studio album, the follow up to ‘The Highway to Redemption’. Is that true?

TISHA: I have begun working on new music. Yes. As far as writing yes I have.

VOGUE: Have you been working with any people in particular, I know you were the sole producer on your last record.

TISHA:
I have been working with more writer and producers on this record. I am not sure if I wanna go down the collaborative trek or solely producing my own records again. But I have been in the studio with Kidd Amaze, Nevaeh Martiniez , Timbaland, and Nadia Berry thus far. I don’t know if I will add anymore collaborators, you’ll have to wait and see [Tisha innocently laughs].

VOGUE: Fans will be excited your working with longtime collaborator Nadia Berry, any chance you will feature her on any GirlSpice members on the record.

TISHA: Ummmm. I don’t know. I don’t wanna burst anyone’s bubble. But we’ve collabortated as far as vocalizing, so many times, I don’t know. Nadia and I work well together as far as writing and producing. We understand each other well, It’s like I sit at the piano and I’ll say “Listen to this” and she’ll add on, or I’m sitting at my piano and I tell her what’s been going on with my life and the bitch comes up with a song just like that. We gel together, I don’t know if she will sing with me. I don’t know if that’s the direction I’ll go yet.

"When I go home and lock my door, there is no red carpet awaiting my arrival. I don’t wear fancy gowns and flashy costumes when I get home, I am in a T-shirt and Russell sweatpants."

VOGUE: What is the biggest lesson you have learned in the industry?

TISHA: Well that’s easy. The biggest lesson the industry has taught me is that IT’S NOT REAL. It’s not real. If you get caught up in the people taking your pictures, being followed everywhere, partying with some of the wealthiest people, socializing with some of the most influential people, whether bad or good influence, you will get chewed up and spit out. That almost happened to me. But at the end of the day it is a business and I am here to make music, I am here to entertain, I am a performer. If I make a few friends along the way, that’s cool. I can dig it, but I am not here for friendship. When I go home and lock my door, there is no red carpet awaiting my arrival. I don’t wear fancy gowns and flashy costumes when I get home, I am in a T-shirt and Russell sweatpants. It’s a business, its not my life. But some celebrities get so caught up in being celebrated they forget about artistry. I don’t wanna be that chick.
