MY FIRST TIME Rum & Coke
In our new column My First Time , we ask some of our favorite artists to share some of the all-important firsts that have helped shape their lives . Today , Hip Hop's very own Rum & Coke spills the beans on underage drinking , not-so-innocent childhood memories and finally being the main attractions . Just days before they world premiere their newest single Sentenced4Life LIVE on the Chaos Awards , get to know a little more about your favorite duo !
My first memory Coke : I was coloring eggs with my parents I guess on Easter , I mean , when else do you color eggs ? The whole thing seems really happy and full of normal family love . Which is like .. so ironic because that isn't even my family on our best days .
Rum : I have no idea if it's a memory or something out of movie but I was on a swing and somebody pushed me off . Or I jumped off . I don't know , s--t was crazy back then .
My first instrument Rum : The piano . Nita practically forced me to play it since I was out the womb . She was in love with the piano but through the years she didn't feel like playing so she taught me instead for whenever she wants to hear something . She blames her age but I've seen her work quick with the sugar canes . She's just too lazy .
Coke : If it counts , my voice ! Ever since I knew how to talk , I've been singing . It's always been my thing . I did learn how to play on a keyboard and guitar later on in life though .
My first dream Coke : I've always wanted to be Janet Jackson's musical offspring . As if one day she'd randomly discover me in the depths of Toronto and take me on a tour with her and groom me as her own . I swear I just wanted to morph into her but this one was a little more realistic .
Rum : Throughout all of middle school , I was determined to be the first girl in the NBA . I couldn't with the WNBA . Which , now the dream is stupid because I'm really short and scrawny looking . And I can't tolerate fouls . That would get tragic . Me and Kobe would have been fighting live on the court .
My first fight Coke : It was 7th grade I think . At the time a lot of girls were always jealous of me . Especially because I was doing the damn thing with my little commercials and what not , kids always thought I was stuck up for some reason and I was bullied throughout school because of it . But then came puberty and along with cleavage , I grew balls . I remember like it was yesterday . I was arguing with one girl but all I heard was "I bet you stuff your bra ." And then all the kids got quiet and gave each other the signal . So I had to comeback fast . I blurted out , "I bet you stuff your face !" which was a horrible , horrible comeback . But all the kids "ooh'd" and laughed so I guess in some way she was insulted . Next thing you know , she pushed me and I pushed her back . She pushed me again and I grabbed her hair and just ... had fun with it . [Laughs] Like , it was an experiment for me . My head was all , "Is this what violence feels like ? I like this !" [Laughs] I don't know , I can insert something inspirational right here if I want , saying that for once I was stronger than people's words . But then again , there's nothing like dragging a bully .
Rum : I was really young . I think 8 . Way back when in Cuba . I was playing basketball with the big boys .. who were really only 11 or 12 . They kept getting mad I was scoring and wouldn't pass me the ball and when they did , they fouled me like crazy . I could actually play some good Basketball . Boys were always petty about it though . But one time I confronted a boy and started to swing . I have no idea how that fight went down but it ended with my brothers taking out the whole damn team . Just boys laid out EVERYWHERE . [Laughs] Kids were so mean about it too . They were putting "Here lays Ray" on the court's pavement with chalk . [Laughs] Ah , good times . We almost got kicked out the apartments for that .
Our first time performing together Rum : It was the 8th grade talent show . We did a remix on the Fugee's Killing Me Softly . Coke was singing the parts and I was rapping my own little verses . It was actually really good and we got a lot of applause . Even when they were announcing the winners , the crowd was actually chanting our names during the announcement of 1st place like some kind of Disney movie . But ... it turned out we didn't even place . That s--t was rigged man , I swear . Straight blasphemy .
My first time drinking Rum : I was also 8 . [Laughs] It was a crazy year for me . Me and my friends used to have this hideout in a bando ... an abandoned house . We used to sneak and show up there , so we could hang out in private . One time this kid brought some , ironically , rum . So we thought about it for a second and took some more time to stare at the bottle over it . Then just started to pass it around . Within 10 minutes everybody was sure they were drunk but I was just sitting there like , "Did it work ?"
Coke : It was at a school dance . Someone actually spiked the punch and none of the teachers noticed . It was funny as hell . Everyone was s--t drunk , dirty dancing to Britney Spears . You had to be there and experience the foolery , man . You just had to .
Our first time hearing our song in public Coke : We were just chilling in Applebee's when all of a sudden Painted Faces came on . They had it on full blast and everything . And we were looking at each other , looking at the restaurant , looking at their food like , "They know ... they know it's us ! They know this masterpiece floating through their ears was created by the beings at this very table !" [Laughs] Then we started being asses about the whole thing , eating to the beat of the song . Like yesss , we were so hype about that .
