 THE TITANS
PHOENIX
"Pheonix" is The Titans' comeback single released as the lead single of their new upcoming album, which should be released sometime during Summer 2014. The song was written and produced by the five Titans together and is officially released on 7 June 2014 after being premiered on 4 May 2014 on youtube.
"Phoenix" was recorded during the group's break in 2013 and according to Den Walnut, the song was initially only meant to be a slow ballad track for the album, but as soon as it was developed more into an upbeat Pop song, the five decided to use it as their brand new single for the comeback. Also, the lyrics of the song hint at getting stronger after an hard moment which represents a bit the group's hiatus and their comeback.
The group, in fact, released their Greatest Hits in the middle of 2013 and decided to take a break for the Summer, but when Martina Downtown announced her pregnancy, the break was extended for about a year. During the break the five still managed to slowly work on their new record, which has been described as 'different', 'original' and 'more mature' by the members of the pop group and the lead single "Phoenix" seem to have all of its characteristics as Laurence Vega said; "It's the Pop song you would expect from us but still it will sound slightly different from what we've done before. I guess that's because we've explored our sound once again and it kept developing this time too.".
Talking about the meaning of the song, in an interview with Digital Spy Martina Downtown said "It is about not giving up in life and standing up after a tough moment, so it is one of our typical positive, feel-good kind of songs. Very beautiful."
Critics praised the song, which gained mostly positive reviews. PopJustice described it as the most sophisticated and uplifting song The Titans ever made, with synths and pads that create an epic melody, which goes with an original drum beat that can amaze the listeners.
Yahoo! Music stated The Titans are ready to come back with the song and their music is really 'reborn' with it, sounding finally as it should.
The song begins with two pads playing a beautiful melody which is strengthened by the drum beat. The first verse is sung by Joey who almost raps the lines and he's followed by Martina when the melody begins to get more intense with other synths. Martina sings following the increasing uplifting feeling of the song and as her voice seems to get stronger too, she lets Tanya take the lead and hit the higher notes.
When Tanya screams her last line, the chorus opens and the best part of the song starts with the drums getting heavier and more rhythmic and the synths making a stronger melody. The Titans also all sing together giving the perfect harmony and sounding loud and catchy, giving empowering feelings to the listener. At the end of the chorus, Laurence sings with a robotic voice his lines, which are echoed by all the Titans together.
The chorus is then followed by a short instrumental breakdown, during which other synths play a catchy pattern of notes and once the instrumental finishes, the song gets back to the sound of the first verse, with only the addition of the claps in the drums. Joey also sings almost the same.
Then, after another pre-chorus and chorus, the song gets into a deep middle eight where the pads play the same melody of the beginning of the song but as soon as Den sings almost rapping like Joey, the drums play again and the song gets into its catchiest part. This middle eight is eventually ended by Laurence's robotic vocals which lead to the final chorus, followed by the ending of the song which is characterized by the repetition of Laurence's lines, still sung with the robotic vocals.
