Some Kind of Blog entry 1: 5/27/2014

UserPostedImage

This awesome picture was sent to the site from a fan. Thanks, dawg!

Hey, I'm Noel Houston; this is my blog. I'm finally starting a blog, mostly for myself so I can document all the places I go to on tour and so I can keep in touch with my fans (We hardly use the Twitter page.) I hope this doesn't crash and burn like the twitter page, we still do post occasionally but I thought we'd be more frequent. Anyway, I plan on posting every Tuesday; but knowing myself, I know I won't be consistent with posts. Let's just say that post will come anywhere around Tuesday, most likely after Tuesday. Now, onto the juicy parts. Let's talk about myself! Sit down, kids, it's story time.

I was born in Bellingham, Washington on October 8th, 1987 to my awesome parents: Kurt Houston, a phlebotomist, synth programmer, and one hell of a father; and my mom, Ashley Houston, a child and family social worker, a phenomenal jazz pianist, and saxophonist. Without my two awesome parents to guide me, I wouldn't be where I am today, thanks, guys! Anyway, I spent my first five years of life in a crappy house by the beach, going to Vancouver frequently, and rocking out to Led Zeppelin with my dad in the basement. Seriously, that is one of my fondest memories. When I was just about to turn six, I moved to Seattle, Washington where I spent the remainder of my childhood. While I was in Seattle, I picked up one of my biggest passions: Baseball. To this day I am an avid follower of baseball, especially minor leagues. When I was six, I knew I was going to be a baseball stud. That didn't happen. Unfortunately, I tore my ACL when I was a freshman and I was cut off the team and I didn't join again in spite of them cutting me. Assholes...

After that whole bonanza, I started getting into synths, since my father had been trying to get me to get into them for 15 years. I remember programming my first synth on a Yamaha CS5, that was one of the happiest days of my life. Also at that time, I started getting into my dad's music. Now I know what you're thinking "Noel, every dad's music is bands like Journey and Van Halen."

Sure, my dad liked his fair share of classic rock but he was way into synth music like DEVO, Depeche Mode, etc. Also, this synth phase got me into my first band: Babe of the Year. We were a synth surf rock band and we kicked ass! But, we quit before we got any gigs. :( High school went along terribly, I was bullied for being "the nerd who hangs out with the band teacher and showcases synths after class." Which sucks, I got beat up, tossed into the showers in the locker room with my clothes on, I got prank called (The little bastards managed to find my mom's number.) It was fucking awful. They started leaving me alone around the beginning of Senior year when I started beating the shit out of them daily and they realized I wasn't gonna have their shit anymore.

Then college rolled around, I got accepted into Western Washington University and got a degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design. During this time, I started experimenting with drugs, and a lot of them! I did mushrooms a lot and once I started tripping out and I saw an expansion of the solar system. It was then when I pointed to an unfamiliar one and said "Hey, it's some kind of planet!" Thus, I had a band name, the next step was to get my band together. I went around the campus and found some pretty badass dudes, including my highschool friend, Conner. We started making experimental synth pop under the name and we had a couple gigs. We then realized that we had potential and got a full band that included the lineup you know today. We started getting gigs, even touring for small amounts of time in Washington.

I then graduated and held off getting my drafting job for a while to get my band in line. We started touring the midwest more often. This remained the same until we got an email from ΔQUA MANHΔTṪAN about touring with them. We freaked out for a while and eventually agreed. It remains the best tour I've ever been on, I feel bad for anyone who missed it. Then, my band released our EP "Return to Venus" which we released under the awesome Saturn Records. Then nothing really happened until today when I decided to make my blog. I hope this actually takes off, I'd love for this to be a thing. Keep this between you and me but Some Kind of Planet is going to be touring soon, keep your eyes peeled for dates n shit.

Love- Noel Houston

Some Kind of Blog: Post 2 5/29/2014

Music-related things I'm doing!

I know, I know, it hasn't been a week yet. But like I said, posts will be extremely irregular. I'm extremely eager to announce everything I'm doing this summer, autumn, and part of winter. First off, the most recent things: My band is doing a split with the awesome stoner punk band, Police Code! I took the liberty of making a tentative cover for the split; here it is!

UserPostedImage

Pretty dope, eh? Yes, of course it is. Moving on, Some Kind of Planet is touring! In honor of Police Code doing a split with us, they'll be opening as well as the ever talented Jeremy Salazar. We'll be debuting all of our EP tracks as well! As to where we're going we're not sure, but we are going to tour parts of Canada! So far here's what we have lined up, this is still tentative so don't get too excited.

6/12/2014 Seattle, WA (Kickoff party included!)
6/13/2014 Eugene, OR Maybe Portland
6/15/2014 Fresno, CA
6/16/2014 San Luis Obisbo, CA (Jeremy Salazar meets up with us)
6/17/2014 Flagstaff, AZ
6/19/2014 Pueblo, CO
6/20/2014 Greeley, CO/Fort Collins
6/21/2014 Sioux Falls, SD
6/23/2014 Kalamazoo, MI/Flint
6/24/2014 London, ON
6/25/2014 Sudbury, ON
6/27/2014 Fly back home
6/29/2014 Vancouver, BC
6/30/2014 Kelowna, BC
7/1/2014 Bellingham, WA

This tour is going to be really fun, we wanted to play smaller towns that don't get a whole lot of good bands to play. I hope we knock these cities' socks off! It'll be dope, so come out, go to space, go back, and get your memory erased by the government!

The third and final thing I know for a fact I'm doing is I'm making a solo album called "A Great Pile of Rocks." It's going to be all acoustic, coffee shop shit, the lyrics are mostly about dying, losing your girl, losing your lighter, etc. It's gonna feature Jenny Hellinger from Police Code on upright bass on a few songs as well as vocals. I plan on self producing it, it'll probably be a horrible job but nevertheless, I'm gonna try. Also, I'm expecting the release date to be somewhere around October, I'd like to release it on Halloween for shits and giggles.

I hope everyone is excited for the things I'll be doing this year, this year has been a great one for music so far so I hope my stuff makes it better!- Noel Houston

Some Kind of Blog post 3 6/1/2014

Ayyy, it's ya boi Noel again. Yes it's true, I went to the Chaos awards, so what? It was one hell of an awards show. My girlfriend and I got super drunk, met Kai Rollins, and then drove back to Seattle (I fell asleep halfway.) I'm kicking myself for not doing it but, we were thinking about doing a Cali tour on the way back from LA; but we decided we wanted to wait until the tour. :(((( I should have done it. Anyway, we had one hell of a time and we will definitely do it again next year.

So our next gig is Cosmosfest on the 8th, we're co-headlining the second day. It'd be hella dope if we could have a HUGE turnout, so please, if you're in or around Washington this weekend come out and have an awesome time! We'll be doing a meet and greet as well so if you want to meet us, now is your fucking chance!!

Some Kind of Blog post 4 6/10/2014

Yoyoyoyoyoyo, it's me again. Some pretty crazy shit happened this weekend. It was called Cosmosfest, it was in Wenatchee National Forest which is just too beautiful. I camped out for all three days, I met some die hard fans, we drank, we smoked, we moshed, it was a bonding experience. My band played a killer show, I even filled in for Isaac Lovelock, that was fucking freaky what happened to him. I saw some wicked bands and artists, and I'm going to talk about those as well. So, let's go in chronological order first up: Police Code. They set the bar pretty high for the fest, I've seen them a couple times but that had to be the best. There were jackasses in the mosh pit, drunkards, it was just a fun pit to be in all around.

Next on my hitlist is Sabina, it was her first time playing a show in the US and she made us feel like she was used to shows in America, she seemed very comfortable towards the end, she had the crowd in the palm of her hand during Drunk Enough. I was singing along too, just so ya know. Another favorite of Saturday was definitely Hayden, I had no plans of actually buying Shit Happens until Saturday night, he put on an excellent show and Jennifer Armstrong made it better!

After that performance, I hung out with the artists, mostly Police Code and Hayden. Then I headed back to camp at around midnight, I was surprised that people were still awake, I sat by a fire with these two dudes named Matt and Brenton, we talked, sang, rapped, made s'mores for a couple hours and then we got tired and went to bed around 3:30. I woke up early on request of Bryan Kobayashi to help him set up, so I only got four hours of sleep so I had a couple cups of coffee and I was good. Turns out the asshole that Bryan is, he had me help with heavy lifting, I am not built for heavy lifting, let's just put it at that. Then, I returned to camp, met up with Jenny, we had breakfast with some dudes at camp and got ready for day two. I was lucky enough to obtain a spot right up the rail. Then, Mariko appeared. Before I knew it, I was moshing really fucking hard. I even dove off the rail which could have gotten me kicked out but no one noticed so it's all gucci.

I was lucky enough to be dead center of the pit when all that blood rained down, a lot of people up front got soaked in blood. Hahaha! Mariko ruled, I haven't seen an artist that punk in a long time. So it took them a really long time to clean all the blood off the stage which put the fest off about an hour. As I waited, I went to town to stock up on a fuck ton of snacks (Mostly peach rings at a gas station.) Then before I knew it, My Own Violence was up. That was really fucking fun. I've never moshed to EDM and I want to do it again. He put on an excellent show, he's pretty new to the music scene so I'm surprised how experienced he is at shows.

Then it was my turn to play, I'm not going to discuss it much because I just know I'm going to go on an ego trip and hard. But, we did very well, and I think we deserved the co headlining spot. We started a crazy pit, sent the reserved area of the forest to Mars and back. Then Chloe was up, she was pretty impressive, not Hayden good but still good. Then I did my hanging out routine until 2:30, I went to bed early. The next morning, I woke up to see my cooler was raided, they just took a couple six packs, no worries. So today is the last day of Cosmosfest, everyone is really hyped for the music to start so when Big Stacks comes on, it's just fucking wild. People are cheering loudly, singing along. It was just a party. Then Isaac Lovelock came on, his set was awesome up until he took his spill, I hope he came out alright, that was some freaky deaky shit. So I then filled in for him. Aqua Manhattan was next, every time I see them, they do something different. 50's Rape Victim set his fucking Gibson ES on fire, that was hard to watch! They're fucking expensive!

I then watched the Japanese Business Man walk off stage and literally sit and yell at himself in the middle of the crowd. I saw crazy harsh noise, crazy moshing, and crazy people. Then Evangeline Wolfe made her appearance shortly after Aqua Manhattan reluctantly walked off stage. She blew my mind, her music is great, her live performance is better. I feel bad for anyone who missed that. Bryan kept his word about the Popsicles too so that made it ten times better.

Overall, the first Cosmosfest was a huge success, and yes, we're doing it again next year. Thanks to everyone who attended! I had fun with all of you! Even the guy who jacked my liquid bread.

On another note, Some Kind of Planet is rescheduling the tour, here are the new and improved dates with venues as well!
