Title: More Than Memories
Format: Digital Download
Length: 18:49
Genre: Acoustic Pop, R&B, Soul
Recorded: 2013 - 2014
Label: Independent
Writer: Dylan Shaw
Producer: Dylan Shaw

More Than Memories is the debut EP from singer-songwriter Dylan Shaw. Shaw was first taken notice after her covers being posted on YouTube, which has sense seen millions of views and earned her thousands of subscribers. The young singer from Florida then uploaded her own personal track via PureVolume, a website for up and coming artists, similar to SoundCloud. 'Road Map' was a hit among her peers and fans alike as well as her next two official singles, 'Why Can't We Be Friends?' and 'Just Gotta Take It' both which landed within in the top 20 on airplay and digital charts respectively. Although the singer has expressed interest in the music industry, she has also expressed her wishes to do so in a steady way rather than looking for instant success. She's also talked about wanting to learn everything she can and be very hands on with her music. Shaw, who wrote and produced all the tracks on her EP, has also been working on promotion and snagging interviews with online blogs, and uploading some of her own.

The EP is set to be released in August and will feature a mini tour before and after it's release. When talking about the album, Dylan describes it as 'a mixture of memories from my younger years and current situations I've dealt with.' She also goes on to say, "The title of the EP resonates with me well because it's so much more than memories. They are stories and really just encounters I've had." The EP shows Dylan's very versatile sound with R&B and Soul. The topics range from self-motivation to teenage love to some girl anthems for any age. She shows there's no topic she's not willing to discuss and her heartfelt and honest lyrics are a fresh take on life today. From soft and soothing acoustic tracks to some R&B inspired spice which allows her inner diva to be released, More Than Memories is nothing short of great and a nice introduction into music. It is noted that all the songs were produced on Shaw's apple laptop and Garage Band App which allows anyone to create music with different instruments as well as upload it to iTunes.

"For the most part, what makes the EP such a personal record is that I connected with each song and I know others will too. There's something about writing honestly and openly without guarding yourself or being afraid that always creates a song that's worth more than any other song out there. I don't write hollow words, and I don't create hollow songs. I was nervous at the idea of releasing an EP but I've gotten such a great response from my singles and covers that I'm really ready to step into the smaller leagues of music and see where it takes me. I was able to really showcase what I can do as an artist, as a songwriter, and as a producer so there's nothing but me in these songs and on this record."

Genre: Acoustic Pop
Length: 3:07
Label: Independent

Background & Description
Starting off the ep, the first track introduces us to Dylan, her careful nature and her romantic heart which is usually at the center of things. 'Heartbeat' is a relaxed melodic, acoustic track that will have you forgetting about your worries and nodding your head to the beat immediately. Although there's no fancy production, each track produced by Dylan herself, or overwhelming vocals, the track still represents one of Shaw's many capabilities when it comes to showing her colors. Her voice, although having some bass to it sometimes, is presented in a fun and friendly way, crisp notes and lighthearted vocals. What the track lacks in big, over the top feeling makes up for it in lyrics (as cheesy as they seem, they get the point across) and her guitar skills. Automatically, it opens a world of suggestions as to how far her talent can possibly go but for now, she seems modest about it.

Shaw describes her own way of connecting with a guy, proudly declaring her advantage over fancy things and superficial dates. In a way, she's spelling out just how simple of a girl she is, not one to be too impressed with gifts, singing, "I don't need your countless gifts, to sway me/You already got me around, daily/Long walks on the beach, sounds perfect baby" as the guitar acts as the perfect backdrop for the lyrics to be apart of. Instead of just regular singing, Shaw delivers the song in a sing/rap type of way which is just another significance of her style, remaining in control the entire time. The bridge offers the first highlights of her vocals as she sings partially in falsetto, landing on the word 'heartbeat' with a sultry sound. The track is the perfect blend of simple yet effective in everything it was set out to accomplish.

[Verse 1]
I don't need a lot of jewels, or money
I just need to smell your scent, sweet as honey
I'm a little bit cliche, but I like it that way
Do you feel me?
I don't need your countless gifts, to sway me
You already got me around, daily
Long walks on the beach, sounds perfect baby
Do you feel me?

Do you know me, as good as you say?
It's easy to put a smile on my face

[Chorus]
Let me hear your heartbeat, flutter in the night
It's my only proof that you are alive
Treat me like I'm simple, when I am a mess
Lay me on your chest, just lay me on your chest

[Verse 2]
Fame don't attract me and I know what you think
"She's just saying what I like, let me flash around my rings"
You can keep that in your pocket, you can save your drinks
If it's company you want, then you're in the right place
Turn around, turn around, go ahead and turn around
When you're not a star Imma still hold you down
I'm not the same like those others that you thought you found
You'll be spending all your time tryin' to figure out

Do you know me, as good as you say?
It's easy to put a smile on my face

[Chorus]
Let me hear your heartbeat, flutter in the night
It's my only proof that you are alive
Treat me like I'm simple, when I am a mess
Lay me on your chest, just lay me on your chest

[Bridge]
It's music to my ears, it's the only thing that's real
Reality says you're just another human
But I know better (But I know better), there's only one thing I crave
Let me hear your..heartbeat

[Chorus]
Let me hear your heartbeat, flutter in the night
It's my only proof that you are alive
Treat me like I'm simple, when I am a mess
Lay me on your chest, just lay me on your chest

And then it's gone, and then it's gone, and then it's gone
Bye bye
And then it's gone, and then it's gone, and then it's gone, ey-y
Let me hear your heartbeat, flutter in the night

Genre: Pop, R&B
Length: 4:02
Label: Independent

Background & Description
The next single from singer-songwriter Dylan Shaw, has been dubbed by critics as 'her best yet' even though she maintains her simplicity in nature. 'Just Gotta Take It' is a Pop, R&B track which can easily be a contender among Pop songs today. The song starts with a simple chord which progresses to an R&B type beat, keeping in mind this track and her last two tracks have been self-produced by the singer herself from a simple app on her Apple computer. Dylan's vocals enter the song, singing very much calm and filled with happiness. There's a relatively 'bounce' to the way she sings, gliding effortlessly through the verses with no hesitation or problem. Each line, her vocals would enter the next step, either going higher or lower until the end of the verse where you hear her crisp and clear vocals rounding it out. The pre-chorus is sung with her sweet and delicate soprano vocals, again she glides through it without any effort at all. Here, she sings of knowing the hardships she'll face but they don't scare or dismay her at all. She heads to the chorus, her vocals managing to stay the same as she sings about plowing through and taking what she wants in life.

The second verse, she returns to her low and inhibited voice, there's an air of coolness surrounding her without her trying too hard to pursue it. She stays on the topic of getting tired of all the competition and vows to never change for the sake of it.This time around, she ditches the pre-chorus before the chorus and powers through it again. Her vocals are doubled for the effect of hearing background vocals and Dylan's clear as day vocals in the front. She begins to take this time to show off her impressive pipes, as she gives listeners a taste of her vocal ability in this song. She then comes back to the pre-chorus, as the beat sits anxiously for the build-up, and she gives another impressive performance, showing she has a handle on control for her voice. Again, she sings the chorus, this time as she's ad-libbing and once again showing her vocal range with her unique tone being accented here. She has the certain rapsiness to her voice as from the likes of Lauryn Hill and the sweetness to it as from Colbie Caillat, JoJo and Justin Nozuka.

Lyrically, the song focuses on grabbing life by the horns and getting what you want out of it. There's also a certain mist of pride from the first verse, 'I'll climb the mountains by myself/I'm never begging anybody for help/That's what I was taught not to do.' She goes on to acknowledge it will be a tough road but if you really want something in life, you have to take it. She also knows that she will not waste her talents because she knows at any point they could be taken away from her. The second verse talks about the growing need for competition in the music industry instead of just making music because they love to do it. She makes a promise to never become that way and says her reasoning and purpose for making music is to make others happy. In the chorus, she states she knows she will not be perfect but she accepts that fact and decides to pursue her dreams anyway. The track will be sent to radio airplay on the 21st.

I'm not waiting to be given
Any chance, that's not living
So I'll put on my shoes
I'll climb the mountains by myself
I'm never begging anybody for help
That's what I was taught not to do

And I know it's gonna get hard for me to stand
But there's no if, ands, or buts in my plan
I don't think you will understand
Unless you know that things can be given and taken
Nothing's ever promised to me or man
In the end I'm my biggest fan

Along the road I know that I will not be perfect
Don't get it twisted, that don't mean I'm not tryin'
Instead I refuse to be used in this game of life, I will never quit
I won't sit around waiting, sometimes you gotta take it

Yeah, It seems to be a competition
Nobody sings just for the hell of it
Who's the supreme, today? (Uh)
I won't let that ever change me
God forbid I start talking crazy
Cus this soul was made to make people happy

Along the road I know that I will not be perfect
Don't get it twisted, that don't mean I'm not tryin'
Instead I refuse to be used in this game of life, I will never quit
I won't sit around waiting, sometimes you gotta take it

Oooh, ooh

And I know it's gonna get hard for me to stand
But there's no if, ands, or buts in my plan
I don't think you will understand
Unless you know that things can be given and taken
Nothing's ever promised to me or man
In the end I'm my biggest fan

Along the road I know that I will not be perfect
Don't get it twisted, (Don't get it twisted) that don't mean I'm not tryin'
Instead I refuse to be used in this game of life, I will never quit (I will never quit)
I won't sit around waiting, sometimes you gotta take it

(Gotta take it) Sometimes you gotta ta-a-a-a-ake it
(Gotta take it) And I'm about to take it
(Gotta take it) Ohh, whoo-ooa
I won't sit around waiting, sometimes you gotta take it

Genre: Pop, R&B/Soul

Background & Description
Switching gears once again, Dylan taps into her R&B/Soul side, belting out the rather encouraging and subtle 'My View Right Now.' In an attempt to show slight versatility, Shaw takes guitar out of the equation, which gives listeners more of an insight to hear her true vocals without also having to focus on her guitar skills. The simplicity of the track gives her a real natural ability to keep listeners occupied without distractions of over busy production and obvious voice effects. Her voice range proves to be rather large as she starts off the song with a low and yet clear sort of vocals which grow into a mezzo-soprano. It's clear her voice isn't just some regular one heard on the street but has an added soulfulness and likeability to it which makes for a great track. Her vocal control has improved severely and shows she's able to not only sing high but come back down effortlessly. The song has hints of Hip Hop with its urban sampled beat and guitar being played over it.

Lyrically, she sings of ensuring her male counterpart of his position in their relationship, as she only needs him to open up to her instead of being distant but towards the end of the song, she starts to sing how "It's all gone." It's during the last chorus, Shaw delivers probably her impressive vocal performance, belting out the last few notes of the song.

When I close my eyes I swear you're all I see
My head keeps spinnin'
Conversations that you've had with me
And I know it's not fair to bring it up
But I know what you do
You tell me you love me but it's not good enough

Don't know where you are, but I know it's not far
Because you always seem to appear
When I'm going low and no where I can go
Let me into your atmosphere
My view right now needs the man I allowed
To take my breathe away
There's nothing to say
Just need you here to stay by my side when it's all gone

A house is not a home if you leave
Don't you know by now?
People were put in places
So they could look and be found
I won't judge you by your past
Everyone's got some dirty closets
(Ooh)
I'm all about right now, won't you come out of hiding?
Let's not count our losses

Don't know where you are, but I know it's not far
Because you always seem to appear
When I'm going low and no where I can go
Let me into your atmosphere
My view right now needs the man I allowed
To take my breathe away
There's nothing to say
Just need you here to stay by my side when it's all gone

I'm not a rocket scientist but I know you
You can smile and pretend but I can't be fooled
Oh, tell me that I am wrong
It's all gone, It's all gone, gone, gone
Ooh
It is, it's all gone, ooh
It is, it's all gone, ooh
It is, it's all gone, ooh
It is, it's all gone, ooh
I know that it's all gone
It's all gone

Don't know where you are, but I know it's not far
Because you always seem to appear (Seem to appear)
When I'm going low and no where I can go
Let me into your atmosphere (Ahhh, ohh)
My view right now needs the man I allowed
To take my breathe away (Take my breath away)
There's nothing to say
Just need you here to stay by my side when it's all gone
Yeah-yeah, yeah, oh, oh

Background & Description
Continuing with her dip into urban music, Dylan's fourth track from her EP, 'The Exception' is anything but ordinary in relation to her usual sound. It's a complete change, going a little more wayward from the first urban track, 'My View Right Now' but all in all, it proves to be very much in her field. Dylan's strong yet hesitant vocals really give the track its power. She again turns to the rap/sing formula which proves to be more than welcoming. In the track, she pulls inspiration from her influences, such as JoJo with her sassy and brash lyrics, referring to love and it's confusion that leaves her hesitant to fall in love. As part of Shaw's attitude, she refuses to be swayed with the guys over confident attitude, playing hard to get really, by saying she's "the exception" when it comes to falling for his charm again. In between the verses, Dylan's distorted voice sounds as if she's talking on a phone. During the second verse, she admits he's bad for her but she still has an attraction to him as well as loves him. She takes this and grows it further during the chorus as she almost brags about how he leaves but always comes right back, showing her change of role in the usual 'girl chases guy' teen pop songs.

Musically, the song samples Drake's 'Marvin's Room' but Dylan completely turns the track into her own. Lyrically, she takes the song in a different direction than how it ends up, starting in the first verse where she expresses her being cautious of falling in love, this being apparent in the first few lines, "Love makes you happy/It's a two way side street/That's what everyone tells me/But I just- I don't really believe it." In the second verse however, she has accepted the cons of falling in love but says the addiction is what keeps her there and just what she was afraid of but she also shows her control as she sings, "You can go around the world but you still end up here".

[Verse 1]
Love makes you happy
It's a two way side street
That's what everyone tells me
But I just- I don't really believe it
Excuse me if I'm hesitant
I see the world in a new way
These feelings so irrelevant
I'm still waiting for that day

[Chorus]
Do you listen to me, hear a word I've said?
Are we gonna do this or give up instead?
Every thing you tell me sounds like it's a lie
I just throw my hands up in this winless fight
(You can keep leaving)
You go around proclaiming your perfection
Those words don't work boy, I'm the exception
(But it's so apparent)
You already know there's a reason why you're still here
(I think you know by now)
You can go around the world but you still end up here

Oh, ohhh
Ohhh, oh
Ohhh

Am I right?

[Verse 2]
You're such a bad habit
An addicting little pet peeve
But I still kind of love you
Sometimes you can't throw away a good thing
I'm mad at how stupid
You think that I must be
We let this situation get
All kinds of wrong and crazy

Do you listen to me, hear a word I've said?
Are we gonna do this or give up instead?
Every thing you tell me sounds like it's a lie
I just throw my hands up in this winless fight
(You can keep leaving)
You go around proclaiming your perfection
Those words don't work boy, I'm the exception
(But it's so apparent)
You already know there's a reason why you're still here
You can go around the world but you still end up here
(You can go around the world but you still end up here)

Am I right?
You're here, right here
Ain't I right?

'Why Can't We Be Friends' is the first digital single to be released from the 20 year old. Capturing us with her talent and charisma, Shaw tackles a universal issue with the single. Even though there's no fancy production, it seems to work in favor as we get more insight to her voice and projection.

Armed with nothing more than her guitar and a few drums here or there, Dylan takes on the task of playing motivator as well as using her inspirational lyrics. She more than delivers, her clean and natural vocals shining throughout the record. Since the song isn't as high energy as her last one, her control is great, something she is obviously working on, and delivers powerful and sly vocals. There's a sort of a twang to her guitar playing, one could mistake this for a country sounding song, but with only a few seconds of that notion, it continues into the acoustic pop track it really is. You can hear the light maracas in the background as well, really completing the rhythm. She sings the bridge in a creative and fun way, the first two lines resembling a scale as she goes from high to lower register and then back up on the second line, one of the highlights and unique parts of the track.

Lyrically, the song is expressing her discontent with people living for others, in essence dictating who they are and who they hang out with. The chorus really is an example of this, when she asks the question, 'Why can't we be friends?' She is convincing the other person that it doesn't matter what people think, as long as they are happy with themselves. Another notion for the lyrics could be her expressing her ideas on opposite genders just being friends, not letting the outside world assume there's more to the relationship than what it really is. The track is set to be sent to radio on Monday, March 31st.

Ahh, Ahhhh
Ooh

[Verse 1]
We think too much about things that never last
Sometimes our biggest enemy is on our back
We try to please everyone so much we get unhappy
Breaking ourselves so bad that we lose sight, sadly
(Ooh, hoo, hoo) Quit making situations harder
(Ooh, hoo, hoo) Your heart's your armor
We don't need to seek approval to just live our lives
If you think that's the only way to live you better think twice

[Chorus]
Why can't we be friends?
Just stop following trends
Can't nobody tell you who you are
Why can't opposites speak?
Why be afraid of critiques?
It's just so much more liberating when you do what you want to

[Verse 2]
People will never change if they have no heart
Constantly breaking things just to tear us apart
We see what we want to when we're scorned
Say goodbye to the person you once knew as you mourn
But why

[Chorus]
Why can't we be friends?
Just stop following trends
Can't nobody tell you who you are
Why can't opposites speak?
Why be afraid of critiques?
It's just so much more liberating when you do what you want to

[Bridge]
There's no need to get approval
When we're being what we want to
In the end you're only supposed to know yourself
As long as you can let me in don't worry about anyone else

[Chorus]
Why can't we be friends? (Why can't we be friends?)
Just stop following trends
Can't nobody tell you who you are
Why can't opposites speak? (Why's there gotta be more to this?)
Why be afraid of critiques?
It's just so much more liberating when you do what you want to

It's just so much more liberating

We don't need to seek approval to just live our lives
If you think that's the only way to live you better think twice
