Pop has changed America. who wasn't singing whether you were a guy or a girl "hit me baby one more time" in 1999. (Baby..One more time) who wasn't singing "umbrella eh, eh" in 2007 (Umbrella) Pop songs dominate the charts most of the time. Pop songs makes people dance and sing. Pop songs are catchy and entertaining. Pop culture- Movies, Music, Channels (MTV), ect. I don't know where would I be without Pop Music. Thank You Pop Music. The Importance of 50's rock.
Without it we would have never broken out of the allmost classical music of the 1940's.
We would have never developed pop, which is a derivitave of early rock.
Never would have formed Metal or Punk or Thrash, all of which also come from the roots of early rock artists such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis. |

Pop doesn't dominate the charts, Pop IS the charts. Pop is popular music. Of course, there is other music, and pop music is essentially a diluted, mass-produced version of what's popular off the charts. |

The music you are calling Pop from the 30s to 50s is not pop. It was a lighter rock n roll like you said, pop has nothing to do with that kind of music, and as far a hip hop and rap go? Dont get me started. |

It was CALLED pop. But the pop today has nothing to do with that music. That Rhianna song is not even close to the same kind of music as say "At Last" or "RESPECT". Rap, thats not even music. The closest thing to music in rap is the drum and bass beat. Dont get me wrong, rap artist are good poets, but not singers or music producers in any way. Hip hop, was o.k. when it started, but lately...it blew itself up into oblivion. |

RnB is the pop version of hip-hop, pop-rock is light cheery pop, there's the electro-pop, soul, pop-punk, even jazz has its own pop version, all derived from existing genres, always playing catch-up with the pioneers, who don't necessarily have the same commercial concerns of a major record company. |

I hate when people discriminate rap, i'm not trying to make this a big deal just chill, so calm down. Rap is not sung but not poken either is like a mixture. For example Kanye west, 50 cent ect. Pop changes every year!! year after year, new pop music is developed and thats what i love about it.

Is funny how many people are now mixing pop with they're genres. Thats the only way the make big hits now in days unless the song is overly outstanding.
Pop-Dance R & B and Pop Pop-Rock Pop, Electro

Actually I think its ruined the music industry, its cluttered the charts and is the only music that is covered by the media making it impossible for the new and even legend rock music artists to get in the running. Not because pops better, but because its mainstream. It hasnt done a lick of good for the industry. |

Somethings are better in the music industry business wise and that just happens to be pop. Rock legends? Rock is not dead, but Rock cant be refreshing for it to be rock. Pop has done good, especially for girls, teenagers. Anyway, as I was saying, I love Pop and I have a feeling it will stay around for a long long time.

stephaniewazhere wrote:who wasn't singing "umbrella eh, eh" in 2007 (Umbrella) I liked the All Time Low version .... original version ain't my thing. Anyway, as far as pop goes, '90s pop does it for me. The James song "Sit Down" was THE pop hit at the time, enough so to be released three times in three different versions, in 1989, 1991 and 1998. My favourite album of all time, James - "Laid", was out in 1993. James would have got EXTREME popularity if England had qualified for the World Cup in 1994 (damn, we sucked then), as they had the song, "Goal Goal Goal". James have been going for over 30 years, and never failed to impress. As far as "pop" as you see it goes - Spice Girls. Many girl groups have tried to be as good as them, and failed miserably - they just don't have the personality that Spice Girls did. Everyone could tell the difference between Baby Spice and Sporty Spice - who, apart from fans, can tell which Pussycat Doll is which? Their songs, from the headstrong, crazy "Wannabe" to the condom-related ballad "2 Become 1" and everything inbetween (erm, "Say You'll Be There" kicked a lot of arse as well) and after, are fantastic. |
