"Unleashed" is the debut single from British singer-songwriter, Chloe Byrne. The song serves as the lead single from Byrne's upcoming, currently untitled, debut solo album and first musical release since early 2011 after her departure from British girl band, Brown Sugar. The song premiered on Chloe's official YouTube channel at 5pm on 15th July 2014 without any build-up or mention of a solo career. Popular music site, PopJustice, posted a link to the song on their official website and the audio video of the song now has over 250,000 views.

Background

Byrne was one of the original members of British pop band Brown Sugar alongside Ife Wiseman (nee Kuku), Una Paige (nee Harvey), Saffia Saunders and popular recording artist, Victoria Black. During her stint in the band from 2008 - 2011, Chloe recorded three albums before quitting the group alongside Saffia Saunders in spring 2011. Within Brown Sugar; Black, Wiseman and Paige shared the lead vocals on the majority of tracks while Byrne and Saunders often had very few lines between them. It has been claimed that the pair left the group after management refused to give them more solo time and a confrontation between Byrne and Black pushed things to breaking point. Chloe and Saffia found themselves replaced by two new girls, Sierrah Summers and Serenity White. After her departure from the band, Chloe left the music industry until a very brief Brown Sugar reunion in 2013 which saw all five original members return to the band in the hope of recording a new album. However, the band parted ways once more after a few months with Byrne citing "old habits repeating themselves" as the main reason, suggesting another clash with Black.

Until the song officially premiered, there was no prior knowledge that Byrne was working on solo material. After deleting her social media accounts back in February and removing herself from the public eye after he departure from the band, many believed she had retired from the business. After the track was posted, she reactivated her official Twitter account to inform everyone about the single and her album. Byrne revealed that the song was written in March this year in a writing session with two friends within the industry and the track itself was initially part of her new project, writing songs for other artists. Chloe wrote and recorded the demo of the song with Kryztal in mind and planned on sending the song over to her management but after a mix up with emails, the song was never heard by the other party and was left with Chloe. It wasn't until two months later, in May 2014, when Byrne decided to have the demo version with her own vocals on it mixed and 'polished off', deciding to keep it for herself. The singer tweeted; "I think it's time to just have fun again and go for it! Spent too long living in the shadows. #Unleashed". Chloe is releasing the song independently as she currently has no record deal.



Critical Reception

"Unleashed" has so far received generally positive reviews since it was uploaded. Peter Robinson of PopJustice wrote that the song is "a total pop gem and ready to dominate the charts and clubs," and he also compared the uptempo nature of the song to the likes of tracks by popular musicians Isabel and mISTER_b.

Jackie Harding from Pitchfork gave the song an extremely positive review calling it "pure pop perfection. The lyrics may raise a few eyebrows but Chloe comes across as very tongue-in-cheek and edgy than desperate and sleazy which is what is lacking in a lot of "sexy" tracks nowadays. She hits the nail right on the head and ticks every box." She also went on to praise Byrne's vocals, writing, "For someone once dubbed as having the weakest voice in Brown Sugar, Chloe surely comes out fighting and proves everyone wrong. She might not have the powerhouse vocals of former band mate Victoria Black but she can certainly hold her own and her distinct voice even manages to stand out over the banging EDM production."

Alexandra Pattinson of Fortitude magazine also gave the song a positive review; "With an erratic, bouncing bassline that is inescapable and the vocals of a true dance floor diva, "Unleashed" has all the makings to become the song of the summer. For an independent artist to produce something of this quality, something that can rival all of today's biggest pop stars, is highly impressive and can only be applauded even if EDM is not your thing. If Chloe continues this high standard she may well be on the road to becoming the second Brown Sugar member to achieve worldwide solo success."

Robert Copsey of Digital Spy praised the production, lyrics and vocals separately but felt that they did not work together naturally; "While it has all the makings of a killer track, it lacks identity. Chloe's vocals are on point, the lyrics are catchy and production is top notch but it feels like Byrne doesn't connect with the track at all. Her personality doesn't come through and it doesn't demonstrate who she really is as an artist. "Unleashed" would have been better off going to another pop babe like initially intended."
