Length: 3:49Genre: Jazz-pop, R&BLabel: Studio60 RecordsFormat: Digital DownloadWriter(s): Jennifer Armstrong, Sunny MonroeProducer(s): John FieldsIn Jennifer Armstrong's latest single, she takes a small shift musically from her feature with rock duo Pretty Little Freaks, and creating a very smooth and easy track. Even though lyrical content may share some similarities of topic, Armstrong doesn't just outright bash men but instead she gives a coy and witty response to the type of men she's referring to. Extra! Extra! is a Jazz-pop and R&B track produced by John Fields. Written by Armstrong and Sunny Monroe, the lyrical content speaks on exposing the truth rather than keeping it buried. It also strays from the typical heartbreak song in which she seems relieved to be done with the relationship, going hand-in-hand with the spark she has in her voice and lyrics. The track was set to be released a week ago but was pushed back. She first performed the song while giving a special concert in New York City. To kickoff the track, Armstrong utilizes her piano skills by playing a small and simple yet catchy piano melody to ease into the transition of a "typical ballad type song" to a jazz influenced, ball of spunk. The song sounds like she took a interest of Maroon 5, with it's rock and soul combination infused with a very Pop hook and a jaunty 70's vibe. Armstrong's vocals are definitely in her prime, as she shows ability to control her tone and notes without much effort. She goes from soft to loud in a matter of seconds, not even slightly getting off key. The vocals in this song are the highlight as she shows just what she's famous for. Instrumentally, the song progresses with its jazz like nature becoming more apparent in the choruses and towards the ending but the jaunty vibe throughout the single, makes it a head bopper, something you can easily snap your fingers to. In between the verses, the beat is joined by some synthesizers while the piano is still making its presence in the background. Drums and guitar also follow through while later on, you'll hear a tad bit of violins. In the chorus, her voice goes up a note as she sails through it, keeping the same amount of sassiness in her voice which really brings the song together. The second verse, the plopping of the piano keys appears as she continues to sing. The transition from the chorus to the bridge is very unique yet easy as she just continues singing as if it were one big grouping of words, stressing out each ending and holding the notes as the music builds in the background. She then, almost in a taunting whisper, sings the line before the last singing of the chorus, as the music dies down and then comes back on in full swing. Her voice, still shining, is booming over the jazz pop beat. Lyrically, the song focuses on a failed relationship in which Armstrong is glad is over but wants to make sure the truth is heard and not the lies spread by the guy who wants to appear to have done the dumping. "It's one of those songs where you hear about it but you don't really hear about that topic in songs, you know? You hear about cheating and heartbreak but I wanted to be creative with it. I've known tons of guys who were in a relationship and lied about what happened just to make it seem like they were a player or whatever, it's really laughable and terrible. Basically, I'm calling out guys like that and saying 'Hey, I know the truth and I hear you spreading your lies so let me tell the story.' What makes it also fun and different is it's a 'he say, she say' type thing so you're not sure if I'm even really correct, you just have to trust me and go with what you think is right. But all in all, it's a fun song. The jazz influence was totally random but I wanted to step my game up with my music and be different. I'm not hearing jazz influenced songs on the radio, just songs with saxophones but I mean that's not exactly jazz right? (Laughs) So I wanted to switch things up and have this mature yet fun sound." Da, da, da, da, da Da, da, da, da, da Ooooh, ooh
I never tried to judge you Never brought up your demons My faith was so restored in us Couldn't tell me this wouldn't last Finally felt I was on top Gave myself another chance Everything I did you took for granted As if it I'd never check
Don't worry about me baby, I let you think I needed a hero In the end losing you made me lose zero
Extra, Extra, I see you in the papers I hope everyone learns about, just how you came between us It's past too late, to try to keep it quiet Before you start to twist my words, extra, extra
Extra, extra Extra, extra
The truth has set me free Words cannot begin to explain (Cannot begin to explain) Moved on to bigger and better things While you were too afraid You'll brag about, to your friends about How the joke was on me But since you left, I occupied Your place so easily, Ohhh!
Extra, Extra, I see you in the papers I hope everyone learns about, just how you came between us (Oh yeah, yeah) It's past too late, to try to keep it quiet Before you start to twist my words, extra, extra (Extraaaa)
Your love, fragile Don't know how long it's been since I smiled What a mess you've become, I'm so in disgust Oh the mighty have fallen
And don't worry about me baby, you did the best thing ever
Extra, Extra, I see you in the papers I hope everyone learns about, just how you came between us (Oh yeah, yeah) It's past too late, to try to keep it quiet Before you start to twist my words, extra, extra Ohhh, extra, extra Don't worry about me baby, extra, extra (Don't worry about me baby, extra, extra) Oooh It's past too late, to try to keep it quiet Extra, extra
