PRETTY LITTLE FREAKS: BBC RADIO 1 W/ DJ NICK GRIMSHAW"It's like the standard for a good tune has gone down significantly. There's hardly any substance anymore and it's all just empty words and the same beat over and over."Nick: Welcome back, it's DJ Nick Grimshaw on the Breakfast Show, and if you're just tuning in, I'm sitting across from two beautiful twins who also happen to make some great tunes. Everybody, it's Pretty Little Freaks!
Jade: Good morning everyone!
Mia: Hellooo, awesome to be here.
Nick: Now correct me if I'm wrong but this is you two's first time being on this show, right?
Mia: I think it is. Yeah, it is, haha. I think we would've remembered being on here before but nope, this is our first time.
Nick: Interesting, now I've got to break you girls in for our listeners. Thanks for joining us this morning, you two are looking very good over there.
Jade: Thank you Nick, you don't look bad yourself.
Nick: I try, I try. I heard you two were coming and I wanted to look my best, put on some undies special for this occassion.
They all laugh.
Mia: We appreciate the dedication, so sweet. (Laughs)
Nick: So what have you girls been up to lately? It's really great to hear you back on the radio.
Jade: Thank you, Nick. We've been working on our album and finishing up some tours and stuff. It's been a lot more work for this album than our last, a lot of interviews and promo, things we neglected last time.
Mia: We felt like we should give the fans more because it's all about presentation and nobody wants to really listen to you sometimes if you're hardly there. It's been fun though, a lot of great interviews we've had.
Nick: Glad to hear it girls. Now you've got a new single, sort of a new attitude on this record compared to your last. What was the inspiration? And it's quite a contrast from your last single and now.
Mia: It's a lot more...honest than our last album was, to be honest. I know it's terrible to say this but we really did not enjoy our last album as much as a person should've enjoyed their debut album. It could've been so much better and we're really harsh on ourselves with our music. 'One Of The Boys' and 'Bond' were just really heartfelt and honest without trying to appeal to mainstream music and radio. We really wanted to sort of be obscure but not completely. It wasn't our first train of thought. Plus, we can't stand most of what's being played on the radio. It's like the standard for a good tune has gone down significantly. There's hardly any substance anymore and it's all just empty words and the same beat over and over.
Jade: We were writing for our upcoming album and we just had so many ideas, so much to say, and it wasn't like that with the first record. It was almost forced, you know? So we pretty much just sat down and brainstormed and 'One Of The Boys' was a song we had started but never finished over the years. It's got some anger in it but it's really just how frustrated we were at how rock music seemed to be declining over the years, more importantly females in rock music.
Nick: It's a great record, very angry, Sorta scary for anyone with a penis, but great!
The laugh.
Mia: Thank you, that's the point! No, no, but seriously, I mean it's not meant to be just a 'male bashing' song, it's just our frustrations and some of the attitudes we've had to deal with.
Nick: Were they from any of your peers or just random people?
Jade: Random people. We've not gotten much attitude from other music artists but we think it's partly because we don't really talk that much to other artists, and it's weird. We're like all in the industry and never talk to each other. Our paths just never cross or they could but people prefer to stay on their own streets.
Mia: Yeah, there's a clear divide, which is fine with me, but I think we've talked to a few of like Pop girls like Isabel, Jennifer, we've toured with Izzy and TopLADS before. And then we've toured on Warped so we hung out with the girls of SYNCO, who are lovely by the way, and it was just refreshing to find another British group of girls that weren't stuck up or that type. And it's funny because people think like Rock and Pop artists just don't know each other. (Laughs)
Nick: You girls are always so quiet though, it's funny. I never hear much about you except when there was that mix up about something you said? Summat about you two making out, which believe me, it caught my attention! I read and I was instantly a fan. (Chuckles)
Jade: Oh, dear. (Giggles) It was a bit of a mix up, totally taken out of context and it's one of the reasons we hadn't done many interviews before that because we were afraid of that. But to clarify, we are not like some weird incest sisters or anything like that. I have a boyfriend and I'm happy.
Nick: Aw, damn you do? I'm not surprised, you're both two young and beautiful women. Is he 'One Of The Boys' or completely different guy?
Jade laughs.
Jade: He's nothing like the men in our song, he's different and amazing.
Nick: Now going back to your track, it's featuring Jennifer Armstrong and a lot of people thought it was a weird mix to add her since she's basically somewhat of a Pop and R&B girl. Did you come up with the idea?
Mia: Yes, we did. She was essentially our only choice. Because it was such a loud and brash record, we wanted someone who wouldn't get drowned out by the sound and she has one of the most phenomenal voices of this generation. I mean she has a voice that is just made for Rock, I think. Or any genre really. Plus she had the attitude to go with the lyrics. It wasn't for name effect or anything like that because, I mean we have sold a lot of records and we can sell out shows, so we're good on our own, but we hardly collaborate with other people and she came to mind. Plus, it was a girl's record so why not someone who stands up for girls all the time?
Nick: Are you fans of Jennifer?
Jade: We are, we love her. She's the sweetest girl we've recorded with.
Mia: Totally love her.
Jade: And she's just amazing at what she does, like it's mental, her voice.
Nick: Do you have any other dream collaborations for the album?
Mia: I'd love to work with Riot! Obviously, that won't be happening but in the future, before I die, I'd love to do a record with them. It doesn't even have to be on the album.
Jade: I would love to work with Lily or maybe Mark Talley. I think he's got a great ear for music and he's so talented and seems sweet. If not them then I'd love to do something different and fun, like maybe with Carmen Grant or Evangeline Wolfe, I love them.
Mia: I think Aaron Marks was pretty much- pretty much where we were satisfied with collaborations. We were young and thought, 'This is it! We've made it! We're on a record with Aaron Marks, aahhh!' (Laughs)
Nick: So will there be a video? I know you hinted at one on your Instagram account.
Mia: We've just started planning it, there will be. Hopefully it will be edited by next week and we can show it next weekend. It'll be our first, real music video that we've done so we're excited. Everything with this album will be something different that we haven't done before so it's fun and nerve wracking at the same time.
Nick: So you're really going all out with this album? That's great, I can't wait to hear it. Will it be more rock influenced or will you add in some different types of music?
Jade: You can't really tell with us, were so mixed and have different types of music branded within us. (Laughs) We've dabbled in different stuff so it'll be Rock but we didn't turn our nose up to other sounds. We just wanted t make the record really unique and a good listen. We don't like to be put in a box of what we can and can't do. We love our creativity.
Nick: And you should. We're taking a quick break and then we'll talk some more with Pretty Little Freaks. Here's the latest single from Amy Jayne it's called 'Dancing Shoes' on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show.
Dancing Shoes plays over the radio.
Nick: That was the latest single from Amy Jayne called 'Dancing Shoes' which is one of our most requested songs of the hour. I'm sitting here with Pretty Little Freaks and we're talking about their upcoming tour with TopLADS now. How did that come about?
Mia: We pretty much have known them for a little before they took a break and we've toured with them before. Honestly, we love touring, it's one of our things we do. We tour, like a lot. So we wanted to join their tour and finish up our album at the same time. Obviously, we're going to be performing our old material but also a little of some of the new stuff we've been working on.
Nick: I have to say I've seen you girls on tour before and you are amazing.
Jade: Aw, thank you.
Nick: It was a pleasure being there, really energetic and you pump the crowd up, you sound great. If you haven't seen them live, you should definitely check them out.
Mia: We even dance a little, so everyone gets a little something from it. (Laughs)
Nick: We talked about Jade not being single but Mia, are you? The people wanna know, and I do too. (Chuckles)
Mia: Am I single? (Takes a long, dramatic breath) I mean, I'm seeing someone but I don't even know what dating is anymore. Do we write letters and tell them to circle it or do we ask, or what? (Laughs)
Nick: So we could go on a date?
Mia: I don't know, that might be difficult and make things more complicated. I can only take one guy on at a time, sexually and emotionally.
They all laugh together.
Nick: Good to know Mia, good to know! So we've got a special treat for the listeners now. Jade and Mia have agreed to sing for us this morning, singing unplugged, their new single 'One Of The Boys' before they head off. Any final words before your big performance?
Mia: Honestly, thank you to everyone who has supported the single, downloaded it, promoted it, everything. It means the world to us and we have the best fans in the entire universe.
Jade: And thank you for coming to our shows and even the small ones, we appreciate it so much! And keep requesting it on the radio too.
Nick: There you have it folks. Keep requesting their new single and you can downloaded it on iTunes. Before they leave the show, here's an acoustic performance of their new single, 'One Of The Boys.'
The girls headed over to the lounge where they would be performing their single, acoustically. It was stripped back which is something they loved doing at concerts and shows. They sounded near perfection as they gave their laid back performance of the very uptempo and loud song. With Mia leading, Jade gave harmonization and the other way around when they switched for the second verse in Jennifer's absence. The two of them used their char once again which allowed them to always perform well together, it was part of their stage presence. They often exchanged looks when they sang in order to add some emotion to the track, as the rest of the radio crew enjoyed their little private concert and listeners at home were able to determined whether their talent was real or superficially hidden by production and fancy editing.

You never looked at me like somebody All you saw were just skirts and legs It's the same thing Always the same thing But I'd love to go another round Why the anger? The cold shoulder Closed doors won't stay shut this time I'm not sorry for stepping on your toes You don't like it? Well you better get in line
Stereotypical attitudes Mixed with narcissistic brains Try to keep us locked up But we're breaking all your chains (Oh) All your chains (Oh) No more of your old chains I can see why you're shaking You're just too scared to admit You thought we'd cower to your mistaken manhood (Hey) Your manhood (Oh) You thought wrong
And now all you sound like is a broken record So I will change your tune You'll find out soon Just why I'm still around Now all you sound like is a broken record So I will change your tune You'll find out soon Just why I'm still around
We can play just like one of the boys We can hang just like one of the boys
And it's sad that your eyes will never open Still stuck in your chauvinistic ways I'm not frightened, or intimidated I've seen this story and know how it plays Instead of acceptance you're just crying About how much the times have changed You don't believe in God but you're praying Hoping that one day I fade
