I know there are a few fans on this forum, I think they're amazing, they're probably my favorite band. They're so versatile and very technical too.Martin Lopez is one of the best drummers of all time and Mikael Akerfeldt is an amazing vocalist and guitarist. My favorite song by them is The Drapery Falls and my favorite album ()Along with most people's) is Still Life.

I do adore Opeth. All the way from Orchid to Blackwater Park was just a run of 5 albums that I'm really struggling to think of being bettered by anyone else.

I absolutely adore them. I discovered them by accident when I was in middle school fucking around with Kazaa, and now a decade later, I still buy all their shit and go to all their shows when they come by. Hell, I even love Deliverance which, aside from the title track, is very hard to love. Watershed is the closest they've come to matching Blackwater, though Ghost Reveries was close at times. Not all the way through, but it had some very excellent moments.

I definitely prefer Deliverance to the last two records. And over Damnation.

I'm pretty sure that if I had to list them in order it'd be something like this.

1. Still Life
2. Orchid
3. Blackwater Park
4. Morningrise
5. My Arms Your Hearse
6. Deliverance
7. Damnation
8. Ghost Reveries
9. Watershed

2, 3 & 4 are kinda interchangable though. As is 5 & 6 I guess.

The best thing though, from my perspective at least, is I'd come away from the band for a while recently, had been about 6 months since I'd listened to them properly, which has been as big a break from them as I've had since first hearing My Arms Your Hearse, so I get to come at them relatively fresh for the first time since they actually were fresh. It's been pretty exciting.

Opeth > everything else. Well, I exaggerate but they are without a doubt my favourite band. I can listen to 'Still Life' over and over without ever getting bored of it.

Personally, I cannot stand them! At all! Stumbled upon them at a music festival and they were awful, IMHO. And, before you say it, no it wasn't because I hadn't heard them before because there are plenty of bands and artists I became interested in after seeing them live. I was just sitting there praying they would finish the unforgiving assault on my ears before I felt the need to kill myself.

... Just my opinion...

Well quite clearly Opeth are a metal band, they have vocals which sound utterly alien to the ears of a pop fan, so yeah, that's hardly a big shock.

Who's a pop fan?! I'm a rock and metal fan, if I wasn't I wouldn't be at a festival where Opeth were playing. They just happen to suck.

EDIT: Oh, yeah, and throw in the awful stage presence with absolutely 0 charisma on top of boring songs, which offer absolutely nothing to excite me and yeah... great band.

Yeah, no charisma? More charisma than most metal acts I've seen, though that's not really hard. Most people seem to find Akerfeldt's dry humour annoying but I kinda like it. The songs being boring is utter shite though, sorry. You are entitled to not like them, but they are far from boring, there is so much happening their songs. I mean I guess it helps you have an attention span longer than a hyperactive child who has just eaten a whole packet of Skittles, but I can't accept boring.

And go and shock me: what metal groups do you like? Am I off base to assume it's more metalcore stuff?

"So much" like what? Tell all of us poor misguided souls who obviously have missed how amazingly influential and outstandingly different Opeth are to a billion other metal bands out there.

And like I said, my taste is rock and metal, so I don't have an overly extensive interest in strictly metal bands, but I like enough who I feel are a hell of a lot better than Opeth. It's not so much metalcore as the classic heavy metal bands (Black Sabbath), alt metal, nu metal, etc, so bands such as: SOAD, Lostprophets (not so much their later stuff, but their very first album was a lot heavier), Flyleaf, Motorhead, Enslaved, Black Dahlia Murders, Machine Head, Children of Bodem, NIN, Venom, Dream Theater... I do really like Trivium now, although I never used to, but they're an example of a band (like I previously mentioned) who have a lead singer who has a lot of charisma, knows how to work a crowd and keep a show interesting, even to somebody who had never cared for their music beforehand, so I was impressed with them for that reason, and hats off to them.
Plus a whole load of hard rock bands which I really don't class as heavy enough to be metal, although others disagree: bands like Papa Roach, Seether and Linkin Park. Motley Crue and Alice Cooper I love.

I basically like anything from a band that has or does something different, makes me feel emotion - any emotion - with each song, or sounds distinctive to all the other hundreds and thousands of bands out there, and say what you want but Opeth just doesn't excite me. At all. I feel no connection to the lyrics of their songs, the guys voice grates me and the instruments just grind on. I feel nothing when listening to their music, and that's not what music is about for me, and believe me I have tried to listen to them. I wouldn't feel right to argue my case unless I'd actually made a point of listening to them at some time. They just plain and simply bore me. If you can sit and listen to music with very little originality, then good for you, but I can go and find dozens of local unsigned bands that sound just the same, they do not stand out as a band that are special or who will be remembered twenty or thirty years from now.

Oh, and on a separate point, just because somebody doesn't agree with you doesn't make them wrong, or doesn't mean they don't "understand" what they are talking about and you are an incredibly small minded, patronising creature who thinks his OPINION is fact, judging by the way you have spoke not only on this thread but on various others to people who dare disagree with the all-knowing, all-powerful forkboy. Also, the fact that you obviously draw conclusions on little or no evidence just makes you look pompous and quite stupid, if I'm honest, and there is no logical talking to, or reasoning with, people like you because you are simply ignorant. Perhaps it's time to grow up, realise that your opinion is just that - an opinion - and is no different or more valid than anybody elses. And while you're doing that, please take care to take your head out of your ass, if it'll fit back out.

Thank you.

Oh, and PS. if you have anything to say which may change my mind and retract any of the above, then I will, but I don't think you will succeed.

You soon learn not to get annoyed at forkboy. It's his higher power, y'see, he's allowed to talk down on you cause it's a joke, but when we talk back, we're just being ignorant! :P
