"So much" like what? Tell all of us poor misguided souls who obviously have missed how amazingly influential and outstandingly different Opeth are to a billion other metal bands out there.

And like I said, my taste is rock and metal, so I don't have an overly extensive interest in strictly metal bands, but I like enough who I feel are a hell of a lot better than Opeth. It's not so much metalcore as the classic heavy metal bands (Black Sabbath), alt metal, nu metal, etc, so bands such as: SOAD, Lostprophets (not so much their later stuff, but their very first album was a lot heavier), Flyleaf, Motorhead, Enslaved, Black Dahlia Murders, Machine Head, Children of Bodem, NIN, Venom, Dream Theater... I do really like Trivium now, although I never used to, but they're an example of a band (like I previously mentioned) who have a lead singer who has a lot of charisma, knows how to work a crowd and keep a show interesting, even to somebody who had never cared for their music beforehand, so I was impressed with them for that reason, and hats off to them.
Plus a whole load of hard rock bands which I really don't class as heavy enough to be metal, although others disagree: bands like Papa Roach, Seether and Linkin Park. Motley Crue and Alice Cooper I love.

I basically like anything from a band that has or does something different, makes me feel emotion - any emotion - with each song, or sounds distinctive to all the other hundreds and thousands of bands out there, and say what you want but Opeth just doesn't excite me. At all. I feel no connection to the lyrics of their songs, the guys voice grates me and the instruments just grind on. I feel nothing when listening to their music, and that's not what music is about for me, and believe me I have tried to listen to them. I wouldn't feel right to argue my case unless I'd actually made a point of listening to them at some time. They just plain and simply bore me. If you can sit and listen to music with very little originality, then good for you, but I can go and find dozens of local unsigned bands that sound just the same, they do not stand out as a band that are special or who will be remembered twenty or thirty years from now.

Oh, and on a separate point, just because somebody doesn't agree with you doesn't make them wrong, or doesn't mean they don't "understand" what they are talking about and you are an incredibly small minded, patronising creature who thinks his OPINION is fact, judging by the way you have spoke not only on this thread but on various others to people who dare disagree with the all-knowing, all-powerful forkboy. Also, the fact that you obviously draw conclusions on little or no evidence just makes you look pompous and quite stupid, if I'm honest, and there is no logical talking to, or reasoning with, people like you because you are simply ignorant. Perhaps it's time to grow up, realise that your opinion is just that - an opinion - and is no different or more valid than anybody elses. And while you're doing that, please take care to take your head out of your ass, if it'll fit back out.

Thank you.

Oh, and PS. if you have anything to say which may change my mind and retract any of the above, then I will, but I don't think you will succeed.

Hahaha. Excellent reply. Yes, I was being patronising and dickish, I just tend to do that. As dear Elliot says, ignore it, and I do actually make some valid points in amongst the nonsense, rhetoric and bluster. OK, Elliot, didn't say that, but I'm sure he meant it ;)

I do notice you mentioning charisma in a frontman in two posts now. That, well, I don't get. I mean for me, live music it's about how the band sound, how tight they are, the energy, much more than the singers patter. I actually think the audience are more likely to make a difference to a gig for me than the charisma of any particular band member. I mean get told Rob Flynn is charismatic, but he's always just struck me as a dude who stands on stage and says "fuck" an awful lot, even by my standards, and occasionally shouting for a circle pit, and then his stage banter has been aped by dozens of metalcore bands. But that's just me. Doesn't stop his band being fun to watch live. My problem with Trivium, aside from the fact their singer sounds awful, is that they are horrendously derivative and sound like a million other metalcore bands. That's just a personal distaste though, even if I do have particularly strong anti-metalcore feelings, they've actually dulled alot lately. And lets be honest here, guys in metal bands more often than not, walk on stage, say "Hello city we are in, we are band and this is our song" and then start playing, followed by a few through-away lines here and there about how great you fans are and "how many of you have our new album? Well this song is from it!!!" Akerfeldt tries (and mostly fails) to be funny, but he's at least trying to be differ from the usual rock/metal Spinal Tap-style clichés.

Your point on liking music that makes you feel something is of course, fantastic, and I am much the same, I need some sort of emotional connection to music when I listen to it, and it's usually something that forms the very first time I've heard the band, or at least the first couple of times. And Opeth were one of those bands who on the very first listen just struck a chord with me, my first listen of My Arms Your Hearse is one of the few times I vividly remember listening to a record for the first time, and just how blown away by it I was. It made an impact. So I mean I'm pretty passionate when it comes to Opeth and a quick look at Last.fm shows that they are my most listened to band over the past 4 years. I can accept you not liking them, which is an opinion, and I can even accept that they are boring to your ears as they don't make any connection to you, but the idea that Opeth aren't original is utter nonsense. Opeth formed in 1990 & recorded Orchid in 1994. Who the fuck in 1994 sounded like Opeth? They've mixed the Swedish death metal sound with a strong progressive rock influence, with even blues thrown in. Who in the realm of death metal dared touch an acoustic guitar before Opeth? What death metal bands exactly released a Genuinely unsure who it is that Opeth have copied if they are lacking in originality, and so I simply throw this one back to you: how exactly do Opeth have "very little originality"? I mean they'd clearly heard other "prog" death bands like Athiest & Pestilence and were probably even influenced by them to a degree, but frankly I don't think either of those bands sound all that much like Opeth when you consider the whole package.

And I'd take my head out of my arse, only it won't fit up there in the first place courtesy of it having inflated to house my ego. But thanks for your concern! Being slightly more serious, if someone takes their time to lay out well a thought out post such as you just have then I will reply in kind but if someone throws out a couple of lines talking about how a band are boring without it appearing like much thought has gone into what they've said then I retain the right to be an obnoxious cunt.

Incidentally, I'd be quite interested to know how much, if any, death metal you like. I'm just trying to get a grasp of the "boring" comment, and I mean if you find death metal completely unlistenable then that obviously becomes alot easier to understand than if you listen to Morbid Angel & Cannibal Corpse while finding Opeth tedious.

Just putting in my opinion on the 'charisma' thing. For me, seeing a band live is like seeing a show of any kind. It's something to enjoy - some good interaction with the crowd, for me, always enhances it. On CD, charisma comes out through the expression of the music and lyrics, but live, I like something to be a little different, rather than just a band note perfectly hammering out their songs. I'd say that stage presence and charisma are just as important as musicianship if I were to enjoy a show.

And yes, forkboy does also raise some valid points :P

I just bought "Watershed," I plan to listen to it while I'm doing homework later this evening.
