Thank you for listening.

So, wrestling. Grown men pretending to hit each other. Supremely farcical and yet still fantastically entertaining, almost certainly the least intellectual thing in my life, it's just stupid but so much fun that I can't let go.

So if you like wrestling, what exactly do you watch? WWE? TNA? ROH? Chikara? PWG? Puro? Lucha? Or anything else not mentioned?

Just talk about pro grappz~!

I used to watch WWE back a few years when it was entertaining before it became PG and TNA is just one big storyline at the moment.

I stopped because I began to be able to predict the matches.However I began watching it again and a lot of the old matches.Some of that isn't fake though,a lot of the hits are real but they stomp and punch lightly and there are mics under the ring to amplify impact.According to Steve Austin in a WWE book (I forget what it's called, like uncut or something) he said "People ask me what it feels like to be hit with a steel chair since wrestling isn't 'real' well...IT FUCKING HURTS!" The blood is usually real too but the wrestlers cut themselves sometimes which is what they call "Blading" Still I'm a die hard wrestling fan.I really liked what the Hardys were doing in the early 2000s and Jeff is pretty cool now.

To go back to the question I originally asked, well I'm actually on a bit of alow point with wrestling right now. I watch Smackdown each and every week as it's a fucking awesome, consistently full of great stories, good matches, and has some of my favourite wrestlers as well. CM Punk as World Heavyweight Champion is fucking awesome. He's the straight edge, self-righteous prick and is easily the most hated person (for the live audiences) in the WWE right now, it's actually stunning. And he's about to go into the next pay-per-view to fight against The Undertaker. I try and watch ECW too but usually forget because I'm an idiot, but if you download it then it's only 40 minutes long, you have great guys like Christian & William Regal who are there as the vets to try and put over the new guys coming up from developmental, which will hopefully include Low-Ki soon. Superstars is also apparently worth watching as it's a really good 40 minute show. Raw though, Raw is pretty unwatchable to me, partly because I don't give a shit about HHH at this point in time, and John Cena desperately needs to get into a feud that actually means something again. I mean he can be a fantastic underdog babyface but meh. Oh, and Evan Bourne needs drafted either back to ECW or to Smackdown ASAP, please.

Outside of the WWE I haven't watched ROH in a long time. Actually the only indy I watch at this point with any regularity is CHIKARA who put on really good fun shows. Young Lions Cup 2009 sounds like an awesome show, look forward to it coming out.

I downloaded the first Dragon Gate USA show this evening, watched the first couple of matches so far. Urge you to check this show out if you like fast-paced action, lots of flips and guys getting dropped on their heads in scary ways and dives and so on. Really fun stuff.

I fucking love 80s wrestling on ESPN Classic. Tag team midget wrestling is probably the most awesome thing ever. WWE matches aren't broadcasted in Holland, so I never watch the newer stuff.

TNA is basically a storyline at the moment. Also I have to dissagree with Punk being the most hated wrestler, Cena is hated by over half of WWE's fans now.

The idea of wrestling just bores me, really. Not because it's not real, just because.. it doesn't interest me, basically. Never has. Though, I've never been one particularly fond of 'masculine' pastimes.

My point was not only do MMA fighters give more of themselves and their bodies in terms of pain, they are far better with technique and in my opinion more entertaining than anything a bunch of morons with dodgy hair and names doing what is no more than a pantomine that is incredibly badly written and incredibly predictable and is incredibly boring and dull. MMA or boxing is not planned and therefore is a lot more hit and miss as to if your going to get a good fight, but when it is good its a lot better than something which you can guess the result of anyway. I salute lucha wrestlers and wrestlers as a whole, but I prefer more realistic things to something you can watch on a holiday to pontins.

Aye, watching a 20 minute sprint with amazingly exciting spots between say Bryan Danielson & Tyler Black is far less interesting that 30 minutes of Sean Sherk and someone else rolling about on the ground in a way which looks like hugging.

I happen to like MMA & wrestling, and they both have a propensity towards utter dullness at times. Sherk is a great fighter, but watching him is utterly dull. Where as someone like Chuck Liddell at this point in his career is significantly less good, and yet because of how he fights his fights are pretty entertaining. He takes risks going for the KO.

And actually you can can't realistically say that MMA fighters deal with pain better than wrestlers. Yeah, professional wrestling has predetermined outcomes, but they are still getting thrown about, landing on the mat, and often up to 5 nights a week for WWE stars. That level punishment on a consistent basis without giving your body a chance to rest properly contrasts with MMA fighters who generally get a couple of months between fights, and aren't allowed near a ring if they have a concussion. That certainly isn't the case with wrestling where concussions are pretty much ignored. Hell, about 5 or 6 years ago the guy who is currently World Heavyweight Champion in the WWE, CM Punk. Let me just quote him: "Worst injury I've ever had...Cracked my skull, and I kept wrestling for another 8 to 10 minutes, something like that, and during that time somehow my spinal column filled with blood - don't ask me how - I just thought I had a really bad headache, maybe a concussion. Everyone else called an ambulance, I started throwing up, I couldn't get up, I couldn't open my eyes... took me to the hospital and the doctor told me I had a fractured skull. He actually told me, he's seen lesser fractures, he's seen people die from them. And he was more concerned about my spinal column filling with blood. Which, I don't... it's funny to me now, but I guess it's pretty serious, and I was messed up for quite a while, but I actually returned to the ring in two short months." Considering the doctors told him he'd be out for a year, that shows how...foolhardy he was. But certainly don't think you can dismiss wrestlers ability to deal with pain. Frankly, it verges into dangerous territory, I mean there's a reason so many of them end up hooked on painkillers, or even stronger narcotics that lead to a reduced lifespan.


MMA is protected because it's a legit sport. It's regulated, there's proper doping tests, fighters with injuries don't get rushed back prematurely because the state board that licenses the fight will never allow it, it's considerably safer. But really even comparing them is stupid. One is a legit sport, one is a pretty stupid form of entertainment that has it's roots in real sport but that was about 80 or 90 years ago. With wrestling you need to treat it like popcorn TV, disposable stuff. You won't buy it on DVD like you would with The Sopranos or The West Wing, it's more like a soap opera. With guys hitting other guys and throwing them through tables in a kind of Hollywood-lite manner. I think it's just great fun. If you don't, bully for you, don't watch it. But don't compare it with MMA. You can happily watch both, or neither, or just one, they are not really related at all.

I watch WWE and TNA every now and again. However, I think that it's crap compared to around 10-15 years ago when I first started watching it. ECW back in the day was awesome and nothing like the supposedly 'hardcore' version it is now. It's become a parody of former self. I also loved the 'Monday Night Wars' between WCW Nitro and WWF Raw. It was a period of some amazing story lines and wrestlers. The NWO in WCW back in 1997 was pretty cool and produced possibly the best feud and gimmick in wrestling between Hollywood Hogan and Sting as his crow character. Over in the WWF, I was hooked on the Undertaker/Kane feud which brought about some awesome moments like Taker being 'burned' in the Casket match at the 1998 Royal Rumble by Kane and then his amazing return 2 months later and match at Wrestlemania with Kane. I find myself watching great moments and matches from back in the day rather than todays rubbish. I can't stop watching the moment Mick Foley flew from the top of the Hell In A Cell only to get up again later, climb the cage again and then get put through it. Many call this the greatest match ever and I would be inclined to believe it. The fact that Foley who probably didn't have a clue where he was or what he was doing at the time managed to mount an offense and finish the match made the match even more unbelievable. My personal favourite matches including the afformentioned Hell in a Cell match at the 1998 King of the Ring include Sting vs Hollywood Hogan at WCW Starcade 1997, any one of the Hardys/Dudleys/Edge and Christian TLC matches and any old school ECW.

As for the reality of it all , just ask Mick Foley, Terry Funk or any wrestler what it feels like to sacrifice their bodies in the name of entertainment feels like. I'm sure they will say that the pain is real. Injuries happen all the time and some can be very serious career ending and down right painful injuries. The worst injury i've ever seen is Sid Vicious breaking his leg in a match against Scott Steiner in WCW. Search for it on Youtube if you want to. I'm not going to put the link up on here because it's not for the faint hearted and makes me physically sick everytime I see it!! I'm not sure whether he did return to wrestling after that injury but would put money him calling time on his career.

Today's wrestling is way too predictable as someone mentioned earlier. I also find myself saying the endings of a match before they've happened and I cannot stand John Cena. Triple H should just retire. However, he probably won't seeing as the boss is his Father In Law and he can do whatever the hell he wants. You do find some odd gems in todays wrestling though. Undertaker vs Shawn Micheals at Wrestlemania 25 was an awesome match from two of the greatest wrestlers of all time. I genuinely didn't know how it would end (Taker won making his streak 15-0 at Wrestlemania I think!!)and Taker almost broke his neck diving out of the ring. He collided with a camera man and landed directly on his head!! Anyways i'll stop babbling now.

Yeah, seriously with the pain thing.I the same WWE "Uncut or whatever it's called" Shawn Michaels even said about a week after his famous "Hell in a Cell" match against The Undertaker he woke up at home and felt like his back was being stabbed by tons of knives.He actually had to force himself to fall out of his bed and crawl to the phone to call his parents who then called the ambulance.The process of crawling to his phone took 30 minutes and getting out of bed took 10.

I used to watch wrestling back in the days of Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and heaps of other names that are beyond recall. That was when I was nine or ten and wrestling at that age is awesome. Nowadays I couldn't care less...I tried watching it recently but turned it off after ten minutes, it was, well, to me rather pathetic.

You need to look at wrestling in the same way you would a cartoon on TV I find. Don't take it seriously, ignore the casual sexism & racism that crops up from time to time, and you've got a perfectly pleasant mindless couple of hours on the telly.

Well I find it waaaay over the top these days...when I was watching it, two of the wrestlers, prior to the game were having a verbal sparring contest about one been a cheat, the other a big gay elf or whatever and then his mother comes along and all that blah blah and, yes I know its just for laughs but I wanted to reach through the screen and strangle them.
