90's Pop Sensation Georgia Hensley To Make Comeback? She burst onto the scene in July 1998 with her global chart topping hit and teenage anthem,
"Bring It On" at just the tender age of 15 and now it seems, sixteen years after her debut, the lovely Georgia Hensley is planning to make a return to the charts. Hensley posted a picture with British production duo, Make A Scene, onto her Instagram. Latest Twitter followers also include said producers and Deneil Khan. Georgia has also made numerous appearances at award ceremonies and parties over the last few weeks and hosted The Vault's "Ultimate Nineties Cheesy Pop Party" programme last week. On top of that, Hensley was recently pictured leaving Metropolis Studios in London - famed for being "the best recording studio in Europe" and also the place where Christopher Hudson fell down a flight of stairs, ouch! Georgia seems to have made more public appearances over the past three weeks than she has in the last ten years combined.
Hensley has her first TV exposure in 1996, featuring in a Cheerios advert which was heavily aired around the UK and Ireland. It wasn't until 1998 that the Essex girl became a household name after signing a record deal with EMI at the age of 15 and being solely known as "Georgia". Her debut single
"Bring It On" became one of the biggest tracks of the nineties, topping the British & Irish charts before achieving the same feat in the States a year later. The bratty teen anthem won a BRIT award for Best Single and Hensley also grabbed the Best Newcomer award. Follow-up single
"Romeo" also earned her another number one single. Georgia's debut album,
"Sweet Talking" reached #2 in the UK as well as a top ten placing in the US. Third and fourth singles,
"Be Mine" and
"Sweet Talk" both peaked at #3, respectively. At that point in her career, you couldn't open up a magazine without seeing her or turn on the radio without hearing the words,
"come and have a go if you think you're tough enough, bring it on, bring it, bring it on!" Hensley had the world at her feet.
(The downfall: Georgia's infamous top and performance in 2001 made it clear that she had had enough)So where did it all go wrong? After extensive touring, leaving home and dropping out of school, Georgia really began to feel the strain and pressures of fame. She was apparently "too fat" for the American market and although she had some success over there, her label and team felt that it was best to give her image a sexier revamp which Hensley wasn't too pleased about. During the recording of her second album, Georgia was dealing with exhaustion, homesickness and now an eating disorder thanks to the jibes at her weight. Nevertheless, Hensley returned in 2000 with a rockier, edgy sound in the form of the single
"Up All Night" complete a sexy video in which Hensley donned a black leather catsuit. Critics called her "British Britney" and while the new song topped the UK charts and went top 3 in America, Georgia wasn't celebrating. Fans became concerned when her weight drastically dropped and she was constantly photographed looking extremely tired and worn out. Her second album
"State of Mind" was released in September 2000 and became her first number one album in her homeland. Further singles released from the album were
"Never Gonna Get Enough" (UK #3) and
"State of Mind" (UK #5). The public were left bewildered when Hensley announced that she will not be touring the album and that the fourth single had been cancelled. It wasn't until her live performance at Party in the Park in March 2001 when things became clear to the public. During the performance, which is now infamous and her last performance to date, Hensley wore a top with the words "don't put your daughter on the stage", a clear jibe towards her pushy parents. After the show, Hensley was interviewed by Top of the Pops and when asked how she felt after the performance she replied; "Not going to lie, I feel absolutely dreadful. I haven't slept in days, I can't remember the last time I ate and I just feel like I'm being taken for a mug by everyone sitting nice and cosy backstage." She then finished off by saying,
"I'll get better soon though once I finally have some me time. That was it for me, that performance. I won't have to step on a stage and jump around like a clown ever again." It wasn't until 2003 when it was officially announced that Hensley was no longer with EMI but since her performance at Party in the Park in 2001, we haven't heard any new material from Georgia.
The singer has briefly popped in and out of the public eye since quitting the music scene live to the nation. She featured in numerous British television shows from 2005 - 2008, namely soap opera Eastenders where she played beautician Pamela Taylor for two years. Hensley then stepped away from acting too in order to focus on her relationship with Liam Jensen. Since then Hensley has given birth to a baby boy, Alistair, is currently engaged, invested in property and runs her own talent agency from her home in London. After fourteen years since her last release, is Georgia finally ready to wash out the bad taste of her time in the industry and step onto the stage once more?
