Rum & Coke Hotels Better In Tongues Airemese Smith 7:01 Studio60/Tric-Jam Records 2014
Single : Hotels Artist : Rum & Coke Release Date : November 10, 2014 Genre : PBR&B Length : 6:25 Label : Studio60, Tric-Jam Records Written by : Airemese Smith, Nina Tarantino Produced by : FancyN
Hotels is a song by Hip Hop duo Rum & Coke, released on November 10th, 2014 as the lead single off of their fourth studio album, Better In Tongues. It's been described by the duo as "Sentenced4Life part 2", the single released months before this. The song was written by the 2 members Airemese Smith and Nina Tarantino and produced by the rapper of the group, under the producing name FancyN, formerly known as NinaT. The Spitset rapper explained the change of name in an exclusive interview.
"I was born Niña, with an [enye; ñ]... a fancy n [Laughs]. It's a common name in English too, I guess, but y'all don't say it right. Y'all don't say anything right. Basically it's [Neen-ya], not whatever y'all call me. But when I moved to Canada, I didn't want to be 'that girl' so basically I've spent half my life shaming my heritage and ignoring the fancy n in my name. This is me asking the Taíno god's for forgiveness."
The song was at first to be premiered acoustically on PIRCTUREPERFECT'S Rager's Place by the lead singer of the group, Coke, but was "rejected" when she began to freestyle a whole new track instead. That track has not yet been titled as far as anyone knows but has been rumored to be recorded for the album post-performance. Despite that the song went viral, the duo did not forget about Hotels. They went back into the studio for final edits and waited until the right moment to release the single. However, after Rum's girlfriend entered on a reality show and cheated on her with 2 other women on national television, the song was then revised, edited even more and pushed back continuously. The rapper has addressed it many times on Twitter, hinting at this song and even another one called Fragile.
Quote:PREMIUM: @PoiseAThreat I've been trying to avoid the hell out of it. I don't know how Taylor Swift does it.
PREMIUM : Don't worry Twitter, I haven't ignored your trolling. There's going to be a whoooole single and everything. All I ask is that the YouTube comments are legendary.
There was even a teaser for the song Fragile as it was initially meant to be their next single. "Both of the songs were, more or less, all about Rum so I had absolutely no say in it," A laughable Coke says. "It was just really what she felt would fit best. I do think though, we collectively agreed on closing out the album with Fragile. It's such a strong song with strong lyrics and a big--yet gentle-- middle finger to you know who." She explains with class. "Hotels came out the winner as the lead single because... well, you'll have to buy it to find out." Rum began to added on. "I figured that there were already more than a few songs on the album about her but I don't want anyone thinking that that's all the album is, a big ol' slap on the wrist for Mariko. I'll be fucking damned. My verse in this song mentions her a little.. and that's it. It's the lead single because it's everything we want to say in this album, not everything I want to say to her."
The song starts off with a simple R&B soft-hitting beat accompanied by an PBR&B layout in teh background. The song is very mellow and "laidback" as Coke sings the song in a beautiful, effortless voice sparkled with calm riffs and runs. "It's almost as if Rum & Coke's tranquilly losing the love of their life to a ho...tel. That's what makes this song so great." Says Consequence of Sound. At the same time, the minimalism that the track provides, vocally and musically, have been commented on negatively by Exclaim!, describing Coke as "half-awake". But all-in-all, if there's one thing the critics agree on is the exceptional verse from Rum, which also happens to reveal all of the songs included on Better In Tongues. The highlight of this whole song would have to be the second part, referred to as Replace. It fades in just when you think the song is over and gives a Hip Hop feel that has been easily been compared to the likes of the Hip Hop DJ/Rapper duo, Atmosphere. Slowly the song that has been called "a mainchick assurance" over Twitter slowly morphs into a twisted murderous anthem of sorts. When asked if that too had references toward Mariko, Rum laughed it off. "Everything but the 2nd verse was recorded in February. If I had plans to kill her, I wouldn't put it in a song. I'm not every other rapper--I'd never snitch on myself. Why do you guys think so low of me?!"
If I just let it be Simply did everything That got her over me Would you finally see? What would you do? What would you think? Would.. You come back to where you belong? I.. Remember when all of me was your own When my heart was your home
Can't pretend like you don't care You know that just wouldn't be fair These hotels haven't been there These hotels just don't compare I know you find somewhere else to lay When you're away
But at the end of the day You'll spend every cent to stay... And not in these hotels I'm where you reside Not a place you visit from time... Like these hotels
Guess I was the one Chasing Phases over that One Night Guess you really left Graffiti and I'm Sentenced4Life I guess you're my 23 and this is my War Cry You'll always be my Poster Girl and it blows my mind I hope these Fille de Joies don't keep you up All Night Long In a world full of Hotels, I hope you find a home I think I'm Better Off looking for my own In time, these Bandages will peel off on their own I could've been Your Baby in more than just Fun & Games As Fragile as we are, I could still take your name Because Guns & Roses, I don't believe this was in vain Might be passing by, but you still came
So come for me, come-come for me I don't need a true story, just roll your tongue for me I know you can lie to me... But can you lie for me? It's all Better In Tongues? Get Vulnerable for me Though it all took place Right Before My Eyes Even Gravity knows where your true heart lies 'Cause lies ain't all you give Might not know where you was but we both know where you live
At the end of the day You'll spend every cent to stay... And not in these hotels I'm where you reside Not a place you visit from time... Like these hotels
I'm not one for reruns But y'all wont have all the fun You can run But you can't hide from all that you've done And you shot through my heart, right? Right. If I pulled this trigger, we'd be even, right? Right.
These hotels that be in your bed Could send a bullet flying for your head That's why you should be home instead...

Sean lays in bed next to his hotel. Her face isn't shown but her back.. Her back was so sleek. It was decorated by a messy array of her hair but you could still see carvings of tally marks, similar to that of "Sentenced4Life's" single cover. She seems to be sound asleep but Sean was wide awake, staring up at his ceiling. The room was so silent that at a time like this, in a kind bed with another girl next to him, all he could was think about was his home. He didn't like that. He began to force to fall asleep and he slowly fell into a slumber as the video faded to black. The credits began to show. First up 'Hotels'. Followed by 'Rum & Coke as the accommodations', and 'Big Sean as the guest'.
"Hotels" begins to fade in as Sean dreamt of Rum, the girl who was weighing on his conscious. At first, she was looking up, just like he was, but then slowly drifted her gaze and looked straight at him. He woke up in a cold sweat, catching his breath, looking over at the girl sleeping next to him. At least she was asleep. She turned around to him in the bed with sleepy eyes, revealing herself as Coke. They fluttered just a little but she fell right back into a slumber, not noticing how spooked Sean was. Sean sighed, and kept his eyes open, staring back at the ceiling once again and just at that moment, the music of the video stops and his phone rings. But it had a ringtone he had never heard before.
"Just a war cry.." Rum sings in a low pitched, raspy voice. He perks up and looks at his phone. It was Rum calling but he shook off the strange song. It was all in his head. "Hotels" began to play again, starting at the second verse as he slowly slipped out of the bed and put on his clothes, picking up his phone and quietly sneaking out of the room. He didn't want to wake Coke up because he didn't want to have to answer to her. He hated lying. Heh. He hated lying so he avoided confrontation in every way possible. He began to read the text message as he headed to his car.
"At the end of the day", it said. He looked at it puzzled for a moment but put it in his pocket and unlocked his Benz. He walked right up to his car and jumped in but just as he put the keys into the ignition, he noticed Coke in the seat behind him. He didn't jump, he didn't react. The look on her face made it clear what was about to happen. He sighed. "Where you going?" Coke asked with a grim yet innocent look on her face. It was probably the look that made it so threatening.
Sean sat in the chair, tied up with rope and painted in blood. His mouth was covered with tape and his eyes looked weary but they were fixed on Coke, who was sitting on the bed, staring at him. She was in all white and so was the rest of the room. For a minute they just stared at each other, intensely, almost as if in a blinking contest. So she blinked and broke into a giggle. She slowly slid off of the bed, and sat on him, looking him in the eye. But he looked away. She fiercely yanked his neck and positioned center stage, choking him in the process. She got up and ripped the sheets off of the bed and stood on top of it. Maneuvering them around her body, almost as if she was dancing for him.
Looking at her, Sean realized how much she looked like Rum, the girl he was cheating on. It made him think about her. His eyes began to water as he actually started to put thought into this whole situation. Coke noticed this too and slumped down in front of him, pouting. She looked at him and wiped his tear away for him.
"This wasn't as fun as I thought it would be.." She began to say. "I'm going to untie you." Sean lit up at the words. This girl was really crazy but even more stupid.
"But if you try and do something, you wont make it out of the parking lot. I know promises mean nothing to you, but I promise that. OK?" Sean nodded along, anxiously waiting for her to untie him.
Coke hesitates for a minute but then takes out a knife and slowly begins to cut each rope, one by one. Funny, just how much rope she knotted to keep him tied down but how ready she was to let him go. Once she was done, Coke and Sean looked at each other, almost as if taking a war-weary breath before going right back in. It was only a moment before Sean stood up and ran, violently pushing her out of the way which caused her to go flying, hit her head on the coffee table and ultimately land on the knife she used to release him. She lied on the floor, woozily groaning as he headed straight for the shotgun in the corner of the room. He looked at her rolling around on the floor as she gave him one last smile before pulling the trigger and running out of the hotel with the shotgun in hand. He pushed down many other people in the hallways as he made his way out.
"You wont make it out of the parking lot." Coke's voice began to haunt him but he brushed it off. She was just blushing, there was no plan B, she had just made a really dumb decision. He finally made his way outside and reached the parking lot, just as a black car almost ran him down. He wasn't fast enough to outrun it and it seemed that it was purposely trying to run him over, so he stood his ground and aimed his shotgun at it.
"GET OUT OF THE CAR. NOW." He yelled as it began to slow down. So she did.
At first, a man in all black get out of the car and goes to the other side and opens it for Rum. You can see a look of relief on Sean's face. He drops his weapon and rushes over to her, hugging her, kissing her and cupping her face in his hands. He holds onto her so hard that she stumbles a little but she doesn't hold him back. Her only response is coldly said in Spanish. "Mover. Vas a recibir sangre por todo mi cuerpo." He looks at her puzzled, trying to figure out what she's saying, right as a man appears behind him and puts a gun at his temple.Edited by user 03 December 2014 11:01:24(UTC)
