TITLE: Playing With Glass ARTIST: Destinee&Adele WRITERS: Destinee Girard, Adele Gilet LENGTH: 3:57 GENRE: Emo, alternative rock, indie rock PRODUCER: Reza Vranitzky LABEL: Liberation/Nomad Records RELEASED: November 30th, 2014 From the Album: TBA Lately, it seems like all of the music stars of last year have been creeping back into the limelight, slowly, one by one. Ada released her first single in over a year, entitled "Older & Wiser," reminding us why we liked the folk movement so much. Vile Hour returned with an equally offensive track as all their previous tracks had been, reminding us why we had tolerated their contraversies before. And now it seems that Destinee&Adele are back in the running as well. Are they here to remind us why the public used the be so obsessed with the French emo duo? Let's find out.
There were many speculations as to why Destinee&Adele seemed to disappear completely. In the days before they went silent, they were just about to begin releasing their second studio album, Mourning Eyes. The public was very excited for this album, as they had been for the three singles that had come from it. Dressed & Buttoned Up had been D&A's first #1 single, and they were still celebrating. But on the day that the album was supposed to start streaming, the line went dead. Nobody saw or heard from Destinee or Adele until they appeared at the Chaos Awards the next year, annoucing that they had begun working on new material that would be out sometime later in the year. Well, later was correct. One month away from 2015, they show us exactly what they were talking about. So why did the girls disappear? Many people think that they just simply didn't like what music that they were creating then. They had released a cover of Pure Imagination from the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory just before they announced the album, but it absolutely tanked, barely making it onto the Top 20 before falling off the next week. Many people think that the duo was discouraged by this and decided to start focusing on new music rather than what they were going to release. Others chalked their haitus up to creative differences between the two girls. Late last year, Adele announced that she had moved out of the house that she and Destinee shared, and had moved into her own house. While this announcement was very upsetting to some D&A fans - who had taken her moving out as a sign that the duo was breaking up - Adele later said over Twitter that her moving had nothing to do with the state of the duo. Fans rejoiced.
It wasn't until Destinee was on the short-lived newest season of I'm a Rockstar, Get Me Outta Here! that it was revealed the true reason why the duo had suddenly put a halt on their music. During a conversation with Erich Hess on the show, Destinee Girard told him - and the cameras that were always watching - that they had stopped out of fear. While promoting the newest album, Adele and her boyfriend, French musician Florian LeFevre, began recieving death threats and scares. The person sending the notes escalated his violence over the course of a few months until he finally he broke into their house and held them hostage for a total of six hours. LeFevre suffered a head injury during the final attack, but Adele had no lasting injuries. The couple kept the attack quiet, fearing that announcing that it had happened would just encourage other stalkers and attacks towards themselves and other celebrities. After that horrific day, Destinee and Adele both decided that they would both prefer a break, and they did just that for a little over a year.
But now that year has passed, and Destinee&Adele seem eager to have their place in the spotlight again. Will Playing with Glass get them that spot back?
The duo seems to have gone back to their roots with this one, going back to the melancholy melodies and lyrics that gained them so much support in the beginning of their career. Like many of their songs before, this song is about a failed relationship, and how it is finally coming to an end. Destinee starts the song off immediately, being heard with the opening guitar melody as she tells the ex that they won't be getting their Psychedelic Furs records back, and that she can dance to them alone. This is a small insight into the relationship that the song is describing, letting the listeners know that there had been good times in this relationship - possibly when they were dancing to Psychedelic Fur records together. She continues to say that she knows that her ex isn't okay, but she isn't either, so she can't help him anymore. She sings that it's just her, her wine, and her cigarettes tonight, and warns her ex not to call her. The next verse is sang with Destinee and Adele together. Now, instead of talking directly to the ex, they're talking to everybody who might know their ex - friends, family, neighbors - asking them to tell him that they don't live at the same house anymore, and to chain up their doors if they see him coming. It's unknown what boyfriend this is about, or what the boyfriend has done to deserve such an unwelcoming response from the community, but we can assume that it was something awful - possibly physically abusive - if Destinee and Adele are asking everybody to chain up their doors if they see them. The duo also describe how their ex was driving them crazy with the all-night fights they would have, adding another reason for the listeners to think that this ex was possibly abusive to his girlfriend.
In the chorus comes in, starting with Destinee, who is reveling in the fact that the relationship is over, singing, "Thank god we are done." Adele chimes in, saying that holding her ex's hand is like playing with glass, but she's done living in the past. The glass metaphor is another one that could be used to defend the idea that this man was physically abusive to his ex-girlfriend. Destinee hits a very high note in the line directly after the chorus, singing, "Please just disppear," with such a desperation to her voice that the listener remembers why they used to cry to Destinee&Adele songs all the time a year ago.
The opening chorus starts again, but this time Adele is singing the words instead of Destinee. This is used to show that bad breakups aren't something that only happen to "certain people." They can happen to anybody because sometimes people just pick the wrong person. This time it's Adele who is alone with her wine and cigarettes tonight, listening to The Psychedelic Fur records. They sing the pre-chorus again, only this time asking for their friends and neighbors to chain up their mouths. Instead of singing, "Say I don't live here anymore," the duo sings, "Don't say I live here anymore," working off of the fact that they asked them to chain up their mouths this time. In the chorus, another line is added to Destinee's part, giving some finality to not only the relationship in the song, but also to the song as a whole. Destinee now sings: "But this makes more sense / And thank god we are done / Can't say it's been fun." It's a small, almost comical jab at her ex-boyfriend, that Destinee felt she needed to throw in. The song immediately begins fading out after the last line is sang, and then the song ends, leaving the listener wanting more of the French duo that they may or may not have forgotten all about over the past year.
