TITLE: Tashi ARTIST: Natasha Iver WRITERS: Natasha Iver, Reza Vranitzky, Michael R. Young, Edie Washington LENGTH: 3:37 GENRE: Dance-pop, electropop, pop PRODUCER: Reza Vranitzky LABEL: Songs to Love and Die By RELEASED: December 20th, 2014 From the Album: TBA Most people remember in late May when Las Vegas-native Natasha Iver hit the big time in internet fame when she released her song "My Boyfriend Will Hate This Song (Dirty Metal Music Fan)" through her website, and gained a huge mass following literally overnight. The song hit the Top 10, and Natasha was signed to indie label Songs to Love and Die By a couple weeks later. The twenty-two year old - who used to blog about how annoying her parents and boyfriends were on the very website she became famous through - was now a pop star, and was getting ready to record her first album. So with such a sudden change in position, many people had to be treating Natasha differently now, right? Maybe not friends and family, but what about acquaintances? Or even strangers? What about... ex-boyfriends? In Natasha Iver's new song, 'Tashi,' she discusses the way that she exes treat her now that she's had a hit song.
The song starts with Natasha singing "la la la's," her voice sounding almost child-like - but definitely carefree. When the first verse starts, Natasha launches right into attacking her exes. It's not clear if she's talking to one specific ex in each verse, or if so many of them treated her the same way that she's just addressing all of them at once, but it seems more likely that she's addressing all of them at once. She reminds them that when they were together before, they treated her like nothing. To some of them, she was even the side chick, which made them treat her even worse. She continues to say that none of them ever gave her a chance when it came to her music career, saying that her music was too boring for them. In the pre-chorus, she reveals that now that she's famous, the guys that she couldn't ever get to call her are trying to reach her all the time now. She references "My Boyfriend Will Hate This Song (Dirty Metal Music Fan" in the next time, singing, "That 'Dirty Metal' song made you guys sing along," which is her poking fun at the fact that they always told her her music is bad, but now they're listening to her all the time - alone, she adds. And they she musically laughs at them for being alone.
In the chorus, Natasha sets up the scene of all of her past boyfriends, new boyfriends, and the boyfriends that forgot all about are her suddenly noticing her again, and wanting to get her attention. They ask each other, "Hey, isn't that Tashi?," using her nickname to try to make them seem more approachable and friendly. But Natasha remembers how they all treated her before, and isn't going to give them the time of day this time. When the chorus is over, Natasha begins singing her carefree "la la la's" again, and now we know why they're so carefree: Because she literally couldn't give a fuck less about the guys who treated her badly before, because now she's on top and they're still at the bottom.
In the second verse, she asked her exes what they thought about when they saw that Natasha had been signed on to Songs to Love and Die By (Natasha mentions the label owner Amy Meyer by name in the song, referring to her as a "babe"). Natasha goes on to ask her exes if they thought and regretted all the times that they blew her off, or if they just went and bragged to their friends that they had seen her naked before. Knowing her exes, most people would be willing to say that they probably did the latter, but it's Natasha's hope that they maybe did the former as well. She sings the chorus again, which turns into the bridge, where she tells her exes not to bother trying to call her because she doesn't care about them anymore, and if they really want to see her face again, then they can just look her up on the internet. She proclaims that she's finally won, and now the battle is over. Natasha's reward for victory? Getting to hear her exes yell her name all night, and then never having to see them again. The song ends with her repeating the chorus a couple more times, adding in some very passionate, happy victory riffs before it comes to a complete stop, with Natasha's voice being the last things that's heard.
