Juneau presents teaser single Lost Cause
Chicago pop-punk heroes return with a more emo, edgy sound

UserPostedImage

After their debut album, you probably thought you had Juneau pinned down. A band doing pop-punk with a little different, modern and, yes, fresh twist. It was new, it was exciting and it was quite wonderful. Gone was the immaturity and the comical nature that often overshadowed the first wave of what could have been a wonderful and exciting genre, replaced with mature topics, nostalgia and a real sense of uplift that brought pop-punk surging back and introduced a whole new generation to something that brought millions of teens such delight in the early 2000s. But even with all that to their name, as well as a successful album, a chaotically amazing run on Warped Tour and a world tour supporting Hayden under their belts, did we really know the true Juneau? We might have thought so, but according to the guys themselves, all we knew was the tiniest slice of what they are, and boy have they proven it. It may only be a few short months since they announced that they were taking a break from a crazy ride of a first year as professionals, but the Chicago natives have returned to surprise us all with an unannounced teaser that they claim gives a little taster of how they might sound when they get around to dropping their second album.

While it's not an album track - Kellin is quite adamant that they haven't even thought about starting to record their follow up yet - Juneau announced that their new song, Lost Cause, is designed to give their fans a little taster of where their evolution will take them moving forward. And it's exciting! The upbeat tone of what we know to be Juneau might have been shelved for a while with the new single, but it's placed there in recognition of their desire to present a more mature, serious and intense flavour in their music that really brings the raw emotion and passion within them to the fore. There are still elements of pop-punk inherent in the track, sure, but this is an evolution, slow and steady movement away from what we thought we knew. However, Lost Cause gives the band a new air, with its emo lyrics and its intense aura that almost makes you feel the pain of the lyrics vividly. It's the end of every love story ever told, which is remarkably underrepresented in mordern music, and it's the perfect way to take Juneau to the next stage. Listen and dream about every love you've ever lost, the rollercoaster of emotion you experience and the thoughts that come with it.

Hear Juneau's new single Lost Cause after the jump, and read what Dallas and Kellin had to say about the all new Juneau, songwriting and moving forward with their career.

Kellin says: For me...this is kinda cute. It's one of those things where I think no one will have expected it, so it's a nice little surprise. We've been on a break from the band ever since we finished touring the first record at the end of 2014, but it didn't mean we weren't still doing the odd little thing. We might not have got together for practice or to discuss "the next move", but Dallas and I are still roommates and it means we get a lot of chances to work together. This one is literally like the "ten minute song". We just got together one night in the living room and put our heads together to rock out this one emo song. Our first album was really heavyon the whole "new age of pop-punk" vibe, but we think it's important to not get hung up forever on that one sound and get like typecast. As much as I love them, when you start doing that, you end up as Blink 182, where you try to do something serious and people just want you to get up on a stage and start shouting dick jokes at each other, you know? So, yeah, I thought personally it would be great to get a little taster out there early. It feels like we only stopped the cycle for Everywhere We've Ever Been yesterday, but it's been like 9 months since that record dropped, and maybe people want to hear something new from us? I mean, I don't know if they do, but I kinda hope that they do. This is not us starting on our new album as such, it's just like a little taster of what's to come. Something to whet your appetite. What is it the French call it? Something about amuse I think? Anyway, this is that, and I hope you enjoy it

Dallas says: I honestly find writing songs like this incredibly easy. As anyone who listened to our first record will be well aware of, we are the sort of band that like to write about things we know. We sung about childhood, teenage years and friendships and relationships. It was cool, and sure it's emotional but not as much as what you can expect from us moving forward. We're dynamic, and this is the next stage in the constant evolution of Juneau. Are we Pokemon? Yeah, we're Pokemon. Call us Juneauka now...anyway, this is more intense. We wanted our new sound to bring that intensity that you can only know from loving and losing. Something intrinsically more hurtful and emotional than remembering old friends and places you've been. And that's saying something, you know? This is the sort of music that, for me, people will immediately take a step back and away from, but I don't think it has to be. What we've got here is like not the whiny sort of teen angst emo that I think people here whenever you say that dreaded e word. This is a true to life representation of how someone reacts to love and loss, which I feel is an important thing for the music industry to have. More power to all the people out there talking about how strong they are and how they can forget the one they loved and move on easily, but I think kids need to have someone there saying "hey it's alright to feel shit, you've lost someone" and put an arm around them. It's hard in real life, and representing that in music is important to me. Writing lyrics like this easy to me, as I said as well. We've all loved and lost, and I think that honesty over those emotions clashing is such a beautiful. I think these sorts of songs, with little imagery and some sporadic elements...maybe chaotic in their structure, represent real life really well. If I do say so myself. So this is it. I hope people enjoy the ext edition of Juneau...

Sounds like:

You used to make me feel like someone
Who could never know what it meant to be alone
Or how a life could exist without love
And now I'm here writing these sad fucking songs
All about you

When something's broken down
As many times as we have
You can't piece it back together
If it'll never be the same again

We can't go back to that game
Because looking back is never the same
You never meant to fuck me over
But I'll let you know it hurts the same
I know your feet will never rest
Back where my heart falls again
I wish I had the guts to say it straight

You'll be thinking of me in your dreams
At least that's the way it plays out
It plays out in my fantasy
Do you even remember how we used to be
Do you take a second look
A second look back over your shoulder?

When something's broken down
As many times as we have
You can't piece it back together
If it'll never be the same again

You never cried as much as I did
If I could find the scars on your body
I would find they're not as long as mine
If I could see the track marks from your tears
I know they'd never run this deep

You used to make me feel like I could fly
The man gravity forgot because of love
And now here I stand with a will to die
I can't even piece together what went wrong
All I know is you'd never hurt enough
Enough to write this song

When something's broken down
As many times as we have
You can't piece it back together
If it'll never be the same again

I try to think of the light in the tunnel
Like how even though you never move forward
You'll still trip yourself on the same mistakes
I hope you're still looking out from your front porch
Old and all alone and realising what went wrong
Even if you do, I'll be a long way away

When something's broken down
As many times as we have
You can't piece it back together
If it'll never be the same again

When something's broken down
As many times as we have
You can't glue it back together
Cos it'll never be the same again

Honor: I'd say this song sounds angry but that would be an understatement, haha. I like it, and plotting the next move is always difficult but I think you guys will succeed in whatever you do.

Ooc: Like I told you, I really like this :) Excellent job but that's never a surprise.

Kellin: Anger? I think we were aiming for sadness. I think both are the same probably when it comes to love though, haha. Yeah, we just never want people to think they've got us figured out, to be honest. It's always fun to change and make something new and fresh. We're always ambitious :)

OOC: Thank you :)

James: Such a passionate record here with lots of maturity and a clear indication that this band is not afraid to try new things! It's good to see you guys around still, after delivering such a strong debut record and staying active since then too. This is a cleverly written song that is quite frankly surprising and unexpected. I'm already excited for the new album guys! Bring it on!

OOC: Nice work :) and great lyrics !!

Julia: I think rock music needs more of these attempts, I mean we know that emo or pop punk has been kind of forgotten for quite a while now, but seeing people pushing their sounds to nostalgic days of rock and roll is refreshing. Good job boys.

Kellin: haha its an unfortunate side effect of being a workaholic that these guys were not able to get any time off after the end of the first album cycle. I just kept pestering them to get back into the studio and try to get something brand new out there. Glad you like the song too, it's important to us that we can stay true to us but also grow and evolve as a band so we're incredibly happy that people are taking the time to appreciate that and enjoying the song! Thanks again!

Faith: Lyrics in this song that made me feel something: "And now I'm here writing these sad fucking songs / All about you." Internally sobbing. "You never meant to fuck me over / But I'll let you know it hurts the same." Biting my knees. "All I know if you'd never hurt enough / Enough to write this song." Gasping out loud. These, and other reactions, were all ones that I had while listening to this song. And although it may not seem so, all of them were positive reactions. Great job, guys. You really brought the feelings out this time.

Jordan: Me too! I don't get involved too much with the songwriting process, but the fact these guys are writing stuff about me in my teenage years kinda freaks me out. But in a good way. Get me my My Chemical Romance journal, please :( Glad you liked the track! You have Dallas to thank for those lyrics as well, I'll pass on your kind words ;) Oh you do, really? Which one? :O

Kellin: I like to think pop-punk has only been forgotten until our album came out last year ;) I agree, though, there's nothing wrong with nostalgia. People tend to try to rubbish nostalgia as being for "throwback" bands, but I think you can have a nod to the past while still being refreshing and modern. It still works. And thank you!

OOC: Haha thanks! I tend to struggle for ages to get choruses, so I'm glad you like them :D

Dallas: Thank you! I had to reach right down deep into my heartbreaks of old to remember so much pain for these. The fact it brings out actual reactions in people is amazing and makes it all so totally worth it. Thank you so much. When lyrics are so personal and they connect with someone in the way you've described it, it really is the best feeling in the world. Thank you! You are my new favourite person!

Koda: Hands down best band around right now! I'm a huge fan of music based around lovesick and heartbreak and all that emo sh*t haha and you guys have captured a very common and universal feeling with this track which is why I think it'll skyrocket beyond the pop-punk or emo genres and find a place amongst the bigger mainstream music world. I think you're a band that won't accept having barriers put in their way in terms of evolution and artistry and this is why I think you guys are the single most exciting act in the industry as a whole. Amazing new track dudes and I seriously cannot wait for the next record, bring it on!

OOC: Another amazing piece of work man! Lyrically you're always on that next level and it's really reaaally annoying! haha But seriously great stuff, I can definitely see the influence of 'Real Friends' on the song, awesome job! :)

This song is beautiful, the lyrics are amazing, the production fits perfectly. Very well done for a song made in 10 minutes. Keep blowing us away Juneau. It's your calling haha.
