Rep.Rick Marshall:Hello I'm Rick Marshall known for my work in The Nimrod's previous documentary. This one is a more positive one showing the recording of the band's latest masterpiece "Chronicles of a Heretic" the band wanted to film their rise to heavier and more mature Prog Metal so here it is along with an interview.
The video starts with Jimmy and Davey sitting on a couch with some beers and Kit sitting in a chair next to the couch. You can hear music in the background which is a brutal extreme metal track called "Soiled" The members of the band start headbanging and as one note seems a little of Jimmy screams "FUCK!" the band then heads back into the studio a re-records for the 4th time. The song is 13:45 minutes long so the band is thoroughly irritated.
Jimmy:The album all started with Soiled.Davey and I went to the DB for a few drinks and we come back and Kit is going insane on his drums with a melody in the background that he made on keyboards to mimic guitar. It was pretty bad but clear enough to understand his idea, and so Davey and I picked up out instruments and banged out Soiled really quickly.
Kit:Basically when Jimmy and Dave went to the DB I decided to practice my double bass beats and then I added on a simple polyrhythm which became more and more complex, I came up with a melody in my head because I have minimal knowledge of guitar and piano so I used Jack's keyboard to plan out a simple melody.Davey and Jimmy walked in and I'm just re-playing it so they jumped into action. This song is probably the best I've ever written.
A video is then shown of Kit playing the drums to Soiled in the studio during recording. The song goes from insane blast beats to a nice tribal breakdown and then 300+ bpm double bass beats. At the end of the song Kit is sweating profusely and then hears "Ok, just 1 more time" in the background and throws his drumsticks at offscreen Jimmy so that "OW!" is heard. He then grabs another pair and begins to play again. The scene then goes back to the band members sitting but this time Jimmy and Davey have their instruments and a groove oriented riff from the song "The Spotless Lamb" is in the background while Davey and Jimmy play it.
Jimmy:The riffing in the song is REALLY tight. There's lots of barely noticeable changes in it too so we're playing like 3 to 4 nearly identical riffs that sound like one or maybe 2. Jimmy and Davey then play a particularly difficult riff with amazing precision
Davey:That's really hard to do with fingers, I have to shift positions a lot to really get in there on some grooves, to tell the truth Green Day's bassist Mike Dirnt had an influence on that because he really gets in the grooves in their older songs. But mainly I was influenced by Martin Mendez from Opeth during the sessions for this song.
Kit:The song has so many tempo changes that it's hard to keep up.Using a metronome would fuck me up so I had to really learn how to feel the music.Danny Carey really helped during this time, he's brilliant.Martin Lopez too.The double bass is so crazy and erratic like sex on crack ya know?Ya don't know?Well I do...... anyway it was almost impossible to make a polyrhythm like it but if I had simplified it I would've know it wasn't my best.
The scene changes to Jimmy and Davey in the studio playing a more progressive soft part from the song "Ugly Truth".Jimmy then rants to Davey in Finnish about how he should come in in the middle of an acoustic riff with his bass fill and not the beginning.Davey agrees then suggests an extra note in the following riff but Jimmy asks Kit who says no.Davey then shows Jimmy what he means and they both agree that it works. This was the iconic main riff of the song.
Jimmy:If we hadn't added those extra notes the song wouldn't have it's power.Te song goes together very well, we might make it a single.
Davey:I knew when I came up with the idea that it would be brilliant so I persisted that it be used and now we have an amazing song.It also has some crazy bass in it, I really shine on this record because I feel like I under played on the last 2 and the first 2 records we made I overplayed, we all did.
The band is shown playing together in the studio working on the song that becomes The Prophecy. The song is very technical and sounds like Opeth songs from Still Life.It has a bunch of melodies too and guitar harmonies. The drums are very versatile as well with lots of tom beats and latin percussion too, like in Sepultura. The band finishes the song with a flurry of tight riffs and a solo.
Jimmy:The Prophecy is a favorite of mine.I really like how it works. It hits you hard and it's our longest song too.We all pull out everything on it as well.
Davey:My bass solo here is my favorite, very soulful and technical, it's really nice.I also play acoustic guitar on it too which was fun.
Kit:This will be continued hope you liked it, with love, The nimrods |
