Following his impressive debut album which earned him to be in favor with critics, Kato decided to get straight to work on his sophomore album. The album is mostly Pop and R&B with a few hints of electronic as well as dancehall. For The Record is seen as a more 'personal' album compared to his debut in that it is all about Kato's celebrity life and personal life being under scrutiny all the time as well as clearing up certain rumors. Although he doesn't directly address them, he hints at certain subjects with different songs like depression and alcoholism. Kato ventures into a more R&B sound for most of the album, with a taste of dancehall and Electronic music in different songs. The standard version features 13 tracks with the deluxe version featuring 3 more tracks, including the remix to "Don't Have To Say A Word" which features Nadia Berry. Most of the production was handled by Layla Raine and Sunny Monroe, and for the first time each song was co-written by Kato. The album features more darker themes than before with lyrical themes of depression and alcoholism to lighter themes such as love, sex, pain, and motivational tracks such as "David and Goliath." Kato takes on some rumors that have been said about him but at the same time doesn't touch on them too blatantly. His musical influences, such as Michael Jackson, are heard in various tracks like "Gentleman," "Wonder," and "Outro/Exhale." It is also one of the few albums this year to have an intro, interlude, and outro. While the album took 2 years to write and record, Kato initially put the album on hold from being released as he had doubts about it but after retouching and listening to it again, he stated that he's "confident it's his best and most personal album so far." Kato also decided to minimize the collaborations as he felt "it wouldn't have felt personal if I had a bunch of people jump on the tracks just for the name." The album contains three collaborations; Deneil Khan, Nadia Berry, Elle Mills (Formerly of The Dolls) and one with Sunny Monroe although she is unaccredited.
