MrsSmith: Continuing my rant from yesterday, creative control is such a powerful asset. For anyone looking to get signed by a label, NEVER sign without creative control, it's such a dangerous leap of faith. You never know if you've gotten yourself involved with a shite label. Creative control or the lack thereof is such a loose concept and is often abused. It's hard to build a promising career that YOU will be happy with when your label suddenly wants to 360 your image and practically hands you your next album. Just the thought of someone making a suggestion they know you can't say no to just feels downright uncomfortable.

MrsSmith: @TraciMusic Right idea, wrong perception. A record label is a business, not the artistry preservatory people make it out to be. The sole purpose of a label is to distribute and fund. An artists job is to make the music, our job is to release and promote it, and it's all up to the artists and their fans to sell the music. this creates a healthy flow that will not only keep said artist on the roster and with a rational budget but it will also fund a multi million dollar album campaign for 1% of the label: the money makers. It's a system naturally built over the heads of up and comers and the less mainstream artists and they're usually the one's who get the butt end of the deal because certain labels think they can skip out on funding and promoting their smaller artists and smaller artists thinks that is natural and don't realize they could have a hell of a law suit on them. But that's dealing more with marketing control which is very rarely given anyhow. Creative control should be something every artist should have because though it comes in useful for when you're generating the usual cash cow who you need to keep looking and singing a certain way, it's virtually useless. Regardless of your contact, your record label will have final say in everything you release because it is still a mutual agreement. Taking away someone's creative control only gives a label the power to nit and pick through the details and yet it implies so much more. That's how we end up with 30 different rip offs of one artist, labels continuously try to recreate what's popular by using artists who have no say in their music whatsoever. And that's perfectly fine, it's smart. But like you said, these artists might as well be slaves. They're neglected and tossed to the side the minute there's no use for them, therefore always always always ask for creative control if you're serious about your career because it almost always is taken advantage of.
