MrsSmith: @TraciMusic Well see you also proved my point there. Creative control gives you a creative freedom which is really all that you'll have to show for if you're not planning on dominating charts and are more focused on the music. In regards to what you're saying here though: the point in creative control is not that the label can still say no, it's that you have the power to also say no. For example, I've only brought this up because one of the acts that I manage have gotten into a sticky situation and one of the many wrongs was several of their projects being scrapped because their label ultimately wanted them to sex up their music. And when the label decided to stop being passive aggressive and outwardly "suggested" such a thing, the artists were now legally bound to carry out that "suggestion". If they had creative control, a label would never outwardly mention such a thing, sure they'd throw subtle hints like giving them certain songs and pair them up with certain collaborators, but the slightest pressure could easily trigger tension and that's the last thing labels need, yet another artist that doesn't trust them. But that's all i have for storytime without saying too much. In the end I completely get what you are saying. Of course I'm on the other side of the fence so I'll never fully know but I'm in the process of trying to help a group of artists out of a horrid contract before they fall any deeper into label fuckery. Truth is, this is a money driven business and no one is safe from getting screwed over because just like in Monopoly, for some reason the plan is for one of us to end up with everyone's money. Wouldn't call all the artists who get thrown in the middle of that gameboard slaves as much as I would pawns. Either way, making a few right decisions can act as it's own defense and give an artist a bit more leverage and worth.
MrsSmith: I do have to say how sad it is that this business is based around such elitism and an intense game of people skipping out on the bill. Not to mention the five finger discounts for demos, it's like we have to lock them in vaults these days. But that's just how things work here. You need to constantly be able to take charge of your own career whenever it is possible because you might very well be the only person here looking to further it for the better.

KiddCanAmaze: Hearing this talk about contact and up in coming artist gives me flashback to my first offer. Back when I first move here and really had no idea about contracts I was just trying to be independent and make some little money I did a song with Michelle Green and Matt Young. Honestly that was the best move I could have ever made in my life, being able to meet someone that been here and knew what to do and wasn't afraid to part their knowledge. That is one of the biggest things that happen to new faces. Old Vets worry that there are going to be replaced, and it is a normal reaction you been the face of a company getting top filling someone opens up for you and when you come on the crowd is already drain from the first act, and music is a fickle business. Believe it or not I got other offers from companies but they come with the money. You can be all creative if you want but what is important to companies is having something that sells quantity , it is on the artist to provide the quality to the project. The thing that stuck with through a lot of our conversation is pie. You want to get the most pie possible, and the bigger the pie the more it is getting cut. Being local gives you a small pie with less hands grabbing for it but it a small pie and you still have to live off it. Now national pies are big pies and they require a lot of time and work and money, but you can eat well and share more. As a Artist you want the most of your pie (Money or Control), as a Label you want pies (Or artist able to make good content for the public) You want to find talented people and be able to guide them so that they can be successful. Their some shade here and there some people that will cheat you out of something. You got to have a plan and stick to it, know what you bring to the table. You can only get something if you ask for it. I knew I wasn't going to be on a label for to long cause I wanted to be in this position. I wasn't going to change my sound too much after doing my mixtape cause that what I wanted people to hear from me. Matt and I were the perfect fit and that's what you want in a label someone that sees what you see and wants to see you make it, not just see a dollar sign as you walk in. |

Woah, I might hate my label but I'd never use anyone like that. There's so many people I've wanted to get involved with but simply couldn't. TraciMusic: I've never actually understood the point of signing petitions. Does it actually ever make a difference once the big wigs configure and have a set decision? Or does it make the people feel as if they are indeed apart of some fanatical "democracy". Every petition seems to be swept under the rug after some time and only used to raise the impression that a set amount of people are in support for a certain cause but I've never actually seen a petition be the driving force for a post executive decision. I could be wrong but just thought I'd bring it up. |
