Trying to compose a piece of music is hard when you have no sense of rhythm.

So far, I know it's in Db Minor, and structurally, I know it's in three main sections, and I know that there's supposed to be vocals in there at some point, buried in the mix because of my laughably shoddy voice. Great lyrics such as "Walls are breathing a gas that makes me sleep".

EDIT:

Okay, now I've got all the chords of the key, just a matter of putting them in the right order. Kind of like the III to VI to V to VI to i. But it's hard to really settle on one thing over another. Kind of limited by my shoddy guitar skills as to what power chords fit into the chord sequence too, currently only open, and barre 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, and 12th frets, which kind of ruins the doom feel. I might have to drop from the harmonic to the natural minor key for that middle section, because that would allow the barre 3rd with the B instead of the C.

Boy, this music theory is a headache.

Trust me If I lived close to you I would take you out and we will probably end up somewhere in the floor singing "She Wolf", I'm a pretty cool guy to hang out with. I know how to have a good time ;) But sadly I live in the other side of the world. :(

It can be, for sure! It will come though. Everything starts to fit in place after a while, and then you only improve as a musician.

Problem is, it doesn't matter what order I put the chords in, it always sounds hamfisted when I do it. If it were someone else, it'd be okay, but if I do it I can't stand back and say "hey, that's good" because it just sounds like a rubbish amateurish mess. Like, I can't write a melody because it always comes out sounding cheesy or dull, and yet I listen to a simple melody in a real song and in simple terms, there's nothing so wrong about my melody, it's just that it sounds wrong to me.

I think I'm going to have to study a bit more of the Brian Eno school of composition, because he's likewise a non-musician, and yet capable of some incredible simple music. And it's not like other bands where it's all over the place, with Eno you can hear each and every simple part on its own.

In a way simple music is harder to write than more complex pieces. It's sort of like finding it hard to express a point but only using a few words.

When I write, I often scrap and rewrite multiple times before I find something I'm happy with. As you say, some times it ends up sounding cheesy or in my case very predictable. I've never even got to a recording stage with the stuff I write solo! I like quite thick textures, though, so I tend to over complicate. My point is, don't worry if you're not finding it easy right away, because these things will improve with practice. Unless you're Lewis, in which case you can fire out songs (actually, that's not strictly true, he often tells me about weak/strong points of the songs he's writing. I like to think he's bouncing ideas off me :P)!

Elliot is my second pair of ears when writing :3 He gets everything from lyrical jargon, to patterns, to themes, to chord progressions, to some sort of Minor 2nd emphasised harmony in the Middle 8 whereby I start an E on an Eb chord, and so on.

Me and Jonny went trudging through the far reaches of Leamington today, and ended up in a barren field in the bright sunshine to do a few lookbook shots. Suffer for fashion, eh?

Damn, I need a camera worth having and an invite code. With my uberwardrobe and fashion sense, I could rock lookbook's socks. ;] (The only problem is that my clothes and sense of style may be good, but I'm a fashionista, not a model - my face isn't pretty enough and I'm not tall enough to be a model.)

That never happens when you live in a two-story loft in LA. I swear to god, they're mostly as big as a big house.

Anyway, I hate my braces. Can't wait to get 'em off in December.
Too much leather chair is unsightly and greatly increases your risk of leather-smell.
