Angie Martinez: What’s up New York! You’re tuned in to Power 105.1, It’s the Angie Martinez show! Now my guest today is always popping up on me. She never comes announced. Last time we had her here was two years ago, the day after her album dropped and she’s here to talk about her first single off her upcoming ninth studio album. New York please welcome, Miss Tisha Jackson!

Tisha Jackson:
Heyyyy, what’s up New York, Power 105.1?! What’s up Angie?!

Angie: What’s up?! How you been?

Tisha:
I’ve been good! Just making this music thang girl. Working on my new album which I am really excited about.

Angie: Can you tell us anything about the record? What does it sound like?

Tisha:
I can! Well, it’s VERY R&B. This is the most R&B I’ve recorded since Reveal, and that album came out about five years ago in 2011. And I really wanted to pick up where I left off with R&B. I’ve kind of ventured to other musical directions with albums that followed, specifically with the last record 25. That album was more of electro-pop, alternative R&B. However, this record is predominantly straight up R&B. It is heavily inspired by 70’s and 80’s sounds, very soulful, very disco.

Angie: I was gonna say, I feel like people categorize you as an R&B singer so much but your music recent is very pop! Like Turnt was nominated for Best R&B song at the Goldie’s and I was like that is a Hip-Hop record. I feel like you haven’t really focused on R&B in a while.

Tisha
: I haven’t. And I feel like that’s where color comes to play. It’s like because I am a black woman and I started off singing R&B in the beginning of my career, people just categorize my music like that. Like every record I release, it could be the most bubble gum pop song, it’s always number one on the R&B chart but I’m like that isn’t R&B. And you have people who will say Turnt with Dominic Brown and Kidd Amaze was R&B but we were pretty much rapping on that track. But it comes with the territory Angie.

Angie: Did you miss recording R&B music?

Tisha:
I did! I did a great deal! I mean don’t get me wrong, “Highway to Redemption, Reveal, and 25 had a fair amount of R&B material, but it wasn’t like how it was recording my first couple of albums where R&B was the main influence. And I got to the point where I got tired of a lot of R&B singers getting questioned in interviews about if they consider me R&B enough? Or do they think that my music is real R&B? It’s like why compare me to Cassie Valentine or Aubrey Mikkel. I love those girls but they don’t sing like me and I don’t sound like them. Its two different musical paths you know?

Angie: Do you feel like people put you in competition with Cassie Valentine a lot? I feel like they do more with her than Aubrey Mikkel.

Tisha:
Yeah I do. Her new record just came out, and I feel like they try and compare us a lot. But she sings differently than me, her writing style is different than mines, and she’s a different type of performer than I am. It’s like comparing for what? Because we are two black girls with an urban sound?

Angie: Okay, so last Thursday you released “Down” and the internet went into frenzy, we’ve been getting that request the most out of any song here. How does it feel?

Tisha:
It feels awesome. I am happy with the response because it’s a different territory for me musically and sonically.

Angie: YES! It’s a dancehall track! We’ve never heard you do the type of reggae thing and you are speaking paitois in the song! I didn’t even know you could speak paitois.

Tisha:
Listen, I am from Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and I grew up fifteen minutes away from Eastern Parkway which is Caribbean village. All my friends growing up were from the West Indies and that’s how they spoke, and we would go to clubs with our fake I.D.s and they would play nothing but ska, dancehall and reggae, so I grew up around it.

Angie: So “Down” is just a promotional single?

Tisha:
Yes it’s a promo single! I just wanted to give the fans a taste of the new album. However, I will promote it like a regular single, you know? We shot a video for it already. We filmed in Jamaica. It was my second time going and it was beautiful.

Angie: When can we expect the video?

Tisha:
The video will be dropping on Wednesday March 30th. It will premiere on MTV, BET, and VH1, and all their sister stations, and they will be playing it every hour on the hour for twenty four hours.

Angie: Now not getting off topic, but you have to see Tisha you guys! She is here in the studio dressed like she is heading to the Oscars. She has on a champagne colored ball gown drenched in crystals, a short white mink, and her fingers is drenched in diamonds.

Tisha:
Haha. Angie stop!

Angie: Do you buy your own jewelry or is it sent to you by designers.

Tisha:
These two on my right hand were sent to me by Jacob the Jeweler for my twenty sixth birthday actually.

Angie: It’s beautiful!

Tisha:
Thank you! And this one on my left ring man was actually given to me by my sweetie. Drew brought this for me.

Angie: He must’ve paid an arm and a leg for it, it’s huge!

Tisha:
He better had! This is my engagement ring.

Angie: [Laughs loudly] Quit lying!

Tisha:
I am not lying.

Angie: Wait, are you really serious?

Tisha:
Yes. I’m engaged!

Angie: Whatttt?!!!

Tisha:
Yepp!

Angie: How long?

Tisha:
He proposed the end of January.

Angie: Wait, hold up. You about to give me a heart attack. If we call Drew will he tell us the truth?

Tisha:
Girl, go to break, I’ll dial his number and you can ask him for yourself!

Angie: Okay! We’ll do just that. Up next is the new Tisha Jackson single, “Down”. We gotta go to break, and we’ll have Drew on the phone to set the record straight!

Angie: Okay! We are back from break!

[Tisha is heard cackling in the background]

Angie: Drew, are you on?!

Drew:
Angie! Good morning my sister, how are you?

Angie: I am well! How are you!

Drew:
All is good!

Angie: Now we have your girl in the studio.

Drew:
Yes.

Angie: She basically blinded me with this rock on her wedding finger. Are you her fiancée? Are you engaged?

Drew:
Yes, that’s Mrs. Westbrook you are talking to. Yes we are engaged.

Angie: Oh my God!!!

Tisha:
See, I told you. Thought I was coming up to your studio lying and all.

Angie: When is the wedding?

Drew: Soon. Very soon.

Tisha: He wants a big wedding. I’ll be happy to go to the justice of the peace today.

Angie: Do I have an invitation?

Drew:
Of course! We love you. My wife loves you.

Angie: Well there you have it. Drew Westbrook and Tisha Jackson are engaged. Thanks for the exclusive.

Tisha:
You know I only did this with you cause I trust you.

Angie: Well thank you! Drew it was good talking to you, I’ll hear from you soon.

Drew:
Love you Much Ang! Take care.

Angie: We’ll be right back with more of Tisha on The Angie Martinez show!

>>>>>Break<<<<<

Angie: So we just confirmed Tisha Jackson is engaged to be married, now back to the album! Do you have a title?

Tisha:
Yes but you ain’t getting that exclusive out of me today.

Angie: Damn its like that girl?

Tisha:
And that’s just the way it is! Haha. No I have the title; it’s a very personal title, for a very personal album and you all will know it soon.

Angie: Do you have a release date yet?

Tisha:
Some dates have been thrown.

Angie: Which quarter could we expect it to drop?

Tisha:
It will be out soon. I don’t want to rush this album. 25 was recorded in two weeks. I am just relishing in the process of creating my new album. However, I have enough material that if I were to release the album today I could. But I choose not to and I am enjoying working with a lot of new producers.

Angie: Can you name some of the producers you’ve worked with?

Tisha:
Yes! Well Boi-1-da of course! He produced Down alongside with PartyNextDoor. I’ve also been in studio with J.U.S.T.I.C.E LEAGUE, Timbaland, Darkchild, Mike Will Made it, Nina T is sending me some stuff, I’m working with Diane Warren and David Foster, and Babyface should be sending me some material soon as well, he and I have a date in the studio soon.

Angie: You have an all-star cast.

Tisha:
I do. I have very creative people that I trust in guiding me with the direction of this new album, and that’s just a few to name.

Angie: I’ve noticed that since 25 you have started working with more producers. You use to solely write and produce, or have one executive producer like GirlSpice produced some of your albums. What made you want to change directions and work with more people.

Tisha: I wanted to collaborate more. I noticed that I was strictly talking about myself with my music, and I felt that that could hinder me in the future with respect to my career because only so many people can relate to my words but if I have groups of writers and other people around it becomes more of a collaborative effort with the message of my music. Therefore I can reach more people and you just won’t hear my side or opinion of a story that I am telling.

Angie: Will GirlSpice or Nadia Berry be involved with this record, they have produced like 3 of your albums right?

Tisha: Yes, they’ve executive produced about two or three of my albums along with me but nah they won’t be involved with this one.

Angie: Do you plan to tour with the new album?

Tisha: Yes! You know I am. I just got off tour and I already want to go back. I love touring. I really do! It’s funny because when I was a teenager and I’d have to tour and even up to my early twenties I didn’t like it much. Like, I always love entertaining, interacting, and spending time with my fans, but I didn’t like the aspect of living out of a suitcase and always being on the run, but now I can’t get enough of it. It makes me so happy.

Angie: Well definitely download Tisha Jackson’s down, available on iTunes now. And go get her album when it comes out. Will you come back to the studio when it comes out and do a track by track?

Tisha: You know I will Ang. I love you babe.

Angie: Love you too Ti.

Tisha: And make sure to catch the premiere of my video “Down” on BET, MTV, VH1, and all of their sister stations tomorrow at 1 pm. It will be in rotation every hour on the hour for twenty four hours.

Angie: Thank you!

Tisha: Baby! I been in the game along time, I ain't gonna steer none of my children the wrong way. Singles artist don't make it no where and they aren't respected in this industry. When you sell ALBUMS, Like shift weight, units, copies like I do then talk to me. 25 at 8 million, who the fuck are you? Seriously.... I can't. Are you a blogger? Do you sing? You a fan, I know it baby.
