“Down” is a song recorded by American singer, Tisha Jackson. The song serves as a promotional single from her untitled, upcoming ninth studio album. The song was released on March 17, 2016 on Jackson’s youtube channel and sent to Mainstream and Urban radio the same day. The song was written by Jackson, PartyNextDoor, and Boi-1-da. The song is Jackson’s first dancehall, reggae-pop song she’s ever recorded.
Background/Conception/Composition Production on Jackson’s untitled ninth studio album began on January 2, 2016 in New York City. Jackson selected several different producers she had yet to work with to produce songs along with her, Boi-1-da making the cut. As production for the album continued throughout February, Boi-1-da sent Jackson a demo of
“Down” and she fell in love with it from the start and jumped at the opportunity to record the song.
Jackson went over some of the lyrics of
“Down” and switched the hook around along with changing several lyrics. She also assisted the beat. On March 4, 2016, “Down” was officially recorded. By March 11, 2016 the track was mastered and sent to executives at Jackson’s record label, FREEDOM.
Jackson explained to execs that
“Down” was reflective of her upcoming studio album and that she wanted something rich in soul yet playful. Jackson also wanted to experiment with different sounds and musical territories she’s yet to explore. Execs at FREEDOM applauded Jackson for such a bold move musically and initially wanted Jackson to end promotion on her eighth studio album, “25” and release
“Down” as the first official single to her upcoming ninth studio album, but Jackson declined and decided to release the track as a promotional single to her ninth studio album because she is still recording it.
Song Description
“Down” is a Dancehall, reggae-pop song about a young woman’s love and admiration for her lover and their sex life. The track finds itself battling the themes of love and sex and which one the main theme of the track, but Jackson finds a way to intertwine the two themes and not focus on one more than the other.
Jackson enters the track with the chorus suggestively vulgar lyric,
“Bruk it down, down, down, down, down, down”
“Beat it up and go to town town town town town town town”
Bruk being a Patois term for male sperm.
However Jackson also talks fondly of her lover with lyrics like

“Down is a promotional single off my untitled ninth studio album. I really don’t want to rush the process with this album. I’ve been recording such prodigious music and I am not in a rush to end that process. With my last album it was recorded in two weeks and I loved the end product. However, God is speaking to my heart and I feel like I should not rush the process of my ninth studio album. However, Down is such a dope track and one of my favorites I’ve ever recorded, I had to release it. I couldn’t sit on this song any longer. I feel like I am sitting on a goldmine and I can’t hold it back from my fans any longer. This song is unlike anything I’ve ever written or recorded. I love dancehall music. I grew up in New York City and I grew up around dancehall, reggae, ska music because the west indian culture is so massive in Brooklyn, specifically the part of Brooklyn I grew up in. When I went to my first clubs as a teenager, this kind of music was being played. It is no doubt that reggae music has inspired Latin music with reggaeton and I wanted to show how reggae has inspired me as a musician with this song and as a performer. So I hope you all enjoy.
