Outspoken GirlSpice songstress Chantal Hayes is back once again, this time with her fourth single release from her debut album, titled Huntress. Chantal's success has taken many within the industry by surprise, mainly because no one expected her to reach the heights of bandmate Nadia Berry. However, with three consecutive number one singles under her belt, Chantal is certainly making a name for herself, and this time, it's not just from running her mouth, she's letting the music do the talking. While her debut album has received mixed reviews from critics, opinions ranging from "flawless, catchy pop" to "generic, dated and overproduced", it seems the majority will be pleased with Chantal's latest single, both a fan and critic favourite from the record, "One Way Ticket" is definitely a safe choice in an attempt to keep the singer's number one streak going.
Better yet, the song has been revamped for its single treatment, now featuring rising rapper Jaymay who provides a male perspective to the uptempo tune, which will likely help the track to reach a wider audience. While Chantal's parts deal with heartbreak and leaving behind a past full of memories & hopeful plans for a lonely road ahead, Jaymay's feature is almost like a brutally honest confession of his wrongdoings, owning up to his insecurities that contributed to the downfall of their relationship. Lyrically, it's another meaningful release following the previous Cara Zayn penned "I Have Been There", both songs perhaps linking to Chantal's previous relationship with Stinson, who have a 3 year old son together, Jackson.
Though of course, in typical Chantal fashion, she's not crying over the situation and taking it lying down as we hear later in the track "Yeah, I'll be taking flight tonight / I'm gonna run", in fact she sounds relieved to be out of the situation and refers to it all as a joke in the first verse. Perhaps not as sassy as her first two singles, but it certainly has some of the signature Chantal attitude embedded in the track. Sonically, we're taken away from the negativity of a failed relationship within the lyrics and instead, hear a joyous dance-pop track that highlights Chantal's sexy, husky vocals within the verses, before exploding into the track's euphoric chorus which showcases perhaps her best vocal delivery in her entire career.
"One Way Ticket" (featuring Jaymay)(Lyrics by Chantal Hayes and Jackson Miller)Sounds like:
You say I'm crazy, so what if I am?
But crazy in love, that's how we used to be
Don't you remember how we were?
Shining so bright, we coulda wrote our name in the stars
Now this love, this funny love of ours
Is the joke that keeps on givin'
So gimme back my heart, the day I gave it away
I was never the same, I was yours to play
And that's all you'd ever do, you'd pull the strings
And I'd move to your command
Now I'm not the puppet at your every demand
Had all the plans in the palm of our hands
Lively minds, desire in our veins
Whisky stomach and fire in our hearts
But you know what they say, know what they say
Trust no bitch
Expect the unexpected
Cause when you least expect it
I got a one way ticketFor o-o-o-one, I got a one way ticket, one way, one way
For o-o-o-one, I got a one way ticket, one way, one way
And it's all shredded
The future and where we were headed
Now just a blast from the past
Two fools thinkin' it was gonna last
Just foolishly in love
And even more foolish for thinkin' that's what it was
So gimme back my heart, the day I gave it away
I was never the same, I was yours to play
And that's all you'd ever do, you'd pull the strings
And I'd move to your command
Now I'm not the puppet at your every demand
(Jaymay)
I guess you'd say I'm possessive, maybe a little aggressive
How I'm always stressing, messing, pulling the strings on your arm
So perhaps this is my lesson
Just know I meant no harm
Perhaps I just fell a little too damn hard
And the thought of losing you was the worst fucking part
In my head this was the right thing
But now I see it clear
That the more I tried to keep you around
The more I forced you away from here
And I know now that I should have let you be
Because my fucked up insecurities
Sent you away from meHad all the plans in the palm of our hands
Lively minds, desire in our veins
Whisky stomach and fire in our hearts
But you know what they say
Trust no bitch
Expect the unexpected
Cause when you least expect it
I got a one way ticket for oneFor o-o-o-one, I got a one way ticket, one way, one way
For o-o-o-one, I got a one way ticket, one way, one way
No more waiting around, if it's fight or flight
You know where I'll be going with these ripped up plans for two
I got a one way ticket for one
Yeah, I'll be taking flight tonight
I'm gonna run (gonna run)
I'm gonna run (gonna run)
Had all the plans in the palm of our hands
Lively minds, desire in our veins
Whisky stomach and fire in our hearts
But you know what they say
Trust no bitch
Expect the unexpected
Cause when you least expect it
I got a one way ticket for oneFor o-o-o-one, I got a one way ticket, one way, one way
For o-o-o-one, I got a one way ticket, one way, one way
But you know what they say
Trust no bitch
Expect the unexpected
Cause when you least expect it
I got a one way ticket for one
