Guiding Light is Some Kind of Planet's first single after taking hiatus. After touring the US in January last year, Some Kind of Planet decided to take a long break from music, rumors swirled about the next album. They reappeared into the spotlight briefly when they released a track for the "Evangelion Official Movie Soundtrack". The track was the first hint of their transition into post hardcore. When asked, frontman Noel Houston said, "We've been talking about this transition for about a year now, but we've been really hesitant with it because we've all been too invested in our own lives to make it work. We all agreed that we wanted our first track as a post hardcore band to be something special. Something that wouldn't disappoint our fans. With this track, Guiding Light, I think we've done just that. It's something we're all very proud of.

The song starts out with heavy feedback leading into a drum fill. All of the instrumentals come in as Noel begins singing the first verses. From the first set of verses, you can tell the song is about trying to walk out of a relation because of the other partner being insufferable. Noel expresses how he wants to disappear but his love for the other partner brings him back in a circle. After the second chorus, the bridge comes in with subtle feedback and spacey drums which lead into distorted vocals. He sings the chorus twice more before the song ends. The three minute and fifty seven second track is filled with heavy drums, screaming, and technical guitars. You can tell that the band has been perfecting this song for a while.
