Rain is the long-awaited comeback single from the elusive Malaysian-American indie singer Yasmine Kiambang. The track was written by Kiambang herself, with the help of Airemese Smith an Drew Westbrook. The production was handled by various producers, including Flame 1&2, FancyNm DrewWB, and inZane. Released on August 25th, 2016, the track was made available to download on the same day and was sent to impact radio just a week later. Musically, the song is a lighthearted House track with a huge Afrobeats influence. It serves as a completely new sound for the singer who had previously only touched indie pop/rock/folk. In Rain she takes the indie folk sound her fans have always loved and turns it into something catchy that pop radio might actually play. She doesn't seem to lose her message through this transition either, passionately singing to the raindrops landing on her window sill about how much they remind her of people, including herself, to a paced beat full of synths, drum and chants. "This was one of the first songs I wrote when I returned from Malaysia, it was when I first started missing it," Yasmine reveals when explaining the inspiration behind the song. "It just started raining and it reminded me of how it always rains in Kuala Lumpur. The storm took me back to why I was there in the first place, trying to recoup myself and figure out what I want in life, and so just picked up a pen and started writing. I just imagined how rain would feel if rain were a person, then I remembered that rain isn't one singular thing, it's made up of a billion different little droplets that pick themselves right up off the ground and does it all over again before the week is out. We're just like that! We're always doing things to grab attention and be remembered at some level of importance and it puts us in an awkward place." While she tries to keep the theme as broad as possible, it's clear that the lyrics are meant to relate to musical artists much more.
Yasmine
I know the feeling Throwing ourselves at the pavement Hoping someone will hear There’s too much precipitation So much vibration That we’re no longer singing our own songs Scattered rhythm for the same psalm Trying so hard to make it on our own It all ends up the same
When it rains, it pours And we’re left crying out We’ll be but puddles on a floor Consumers stepping in and out We dry up and pray, we make it the next rainy day When it rains, it always pours Left wanting so much more Dance if you relate
I know the feeling We’re all just tryna escape, tryna make a way This compressed form is just a chain When unleashed, we vow to make a wave But no one’s unified, few make it as a unit We all wanna make an impact, no one knows how to do it Few think of us as a saving grace, others want us far away But we’re stuck
When it rains, it pours And we’re left crying out We’ll be but puddles on a floor Consumers stepping in and out We dry up and pray, we make it the next rainy day When it rains, it always pours Left wanting so much more Dance if you relate We’re left crying out Dance if you relate They’re stepping in and out We dry up and pray, we make it the next rainy day When it rains, it always pours Left wanting so much more Dance if you relate And rain rain rain And make it rain And make it rain rain rain, and make it rain And make it rain rain rain, and make it rain And make it rain rain rain, and make it rain And make it..
Land on my window sill I’ll lift you with care You’ll trickle down my hand Connecting with my thoughts Reminding me what I am Breaking trail, splitting personalities Those traces that you leave Are proof that you exist Even if only for a minute In a second, none of this will matter It’s just matter And in this stage of life, we’re just..
Rain rain rain Rain rain rain Rain rain rain Rain rain rain
When it rains, it pours (Rain rain rain) And we’re left crying out We’ll be but puddles on a floor (Rain rain rain) Consumers stepping in and out We’ll dry up and pray we make it the next rainy day When it rains, it fucking pours I see so much more Dance if you relate (Rain rain rain) We’re left crying out Dance if you relate (Rain rain rain) They’re stepping in and out We dry up and pray, we make it the next rainy day When it rains, it always pours Left wanting so much more Dance if you relate
