DIRTY MONEY is the newest single release by rap artist, Jamel Carter, also known as Jay-C. The record was released on February 24th as the first solo release Jay-C has released since his last solo single "Faint" that was released shortly after Jay-C was released from prison. For those who don't know, Jay-C and six other alas were arrested in a drug bust, causing Jay-C to be indicted and sentenced to time in prison. After his release on June 30th, 2015, Jay-C took time out to get his life back in order after being away for such a long time. Prior to his indictment, back in 2009, after sending his demo to numerous record labels in hopes of finding a label where he could release music. Stephanie Fierce scouted the rapper after hearing him work and contacted him about signing a deal with him. In 2010, he was officially signed to Stephanie's now defunct label "Hot Eye Records", fast-forward seven years later, and after Prison, Jay-C has been in full work mode, working on numerous collaborations.
Within the last year Jay-C has worked with Tisha Jackson, Cristina Lake, Kara Romero, Riot! In The Boulevard and has been said to be on more upcoming songs. This only has been wetting the appetite of longtime Jay-C fans, and people eager to see what Jay-C would be doing next after being away for such a long time with no new music out. Thankfully, since coming back home, Jay-C has been making his presence known with the collaborations. Little did people know, Jay-C has been in the studio not only for other artists, but for his own upcoming material that is set to be released as a body of work in 2017. Furthermore, on February 24th, Jay-C made his first chat show appearance in years when he appeared on Late Night with Cara Zayn.
During the interview Jay-C got very candid about making adjustments to life after prison and not rushing back to record right away:
"You gotta understand somethin' when you gone for 5 years....when you get out you got a lot of catchin up to do. I lost contact with a lot of people, family wise. There's a lot of catchin up I'm doin even till dis day. The hardest part Cara was the adjustment. When I left, there was still keyboard phones, blackberries and shit! When I got out, there was basically no such thing as that. Social media took off too. There's a lot I had to and continue to adjust to. Mentally and Physically. So imma be honest, music is always gonna be something I focus on, but coming out of prison....there was other shit I had to focus on in my personal life so I wasn't able to jump right in the studio and release an album months later. I had to get my mind right first. Being somewhere for 5 years..yeah, it was miserable but you adapt and you become used to it. When you come out, it's like, you feel like an alien. I had family that I never even met....little cousins who grew up and ain't remember me. It's real shit. Even getting back into rap and catchin my flow again, there's no studio's in jail. So yeah, you get me? Imma be real though, I'm back now. Doin these collabs got me back in my mojo...I'm feelin myself again. So shit finna be real...5 years...I got shit to say." Jay-C also spoke about his upcoming music when Cara asked him about when would new music finally be coming:
"It's comin...I been in the studio so much lately. I got a record that's gonna drop at any moment. I'm not playin, I'm ready. And its fire. There some collaborations coming too. So 2017 finna be lit year for me." What fans didn't know, was that Jay-C was ready to drop a new record just hours after appearing on the show, obviously captivating off the mass exposure that the chat show gives.
The record itself is a candid, gangsta rap song that shows Jay-C in top form as he lets loose with fiery rap verses about money, and how it controls us. Throughout the record Jay-C explains that money is the root of all evil, yet we constantly keep pushing to make money because it's essentially the way to our livelihood, and because of that constant urge to "stack money", Jay-C calls it 'Dirty Money'. In the record he uses examples of stabbing a brother in the back for money, and controversially strapping a bomb to that plane for money. Jay-C makes use of punchlines to show addiction to money. In many ways the song and song title also can be linked to his 5 year imprisonment, where he was arrested for drug dealing, theft and weapons possessions and it's already known that the term "dirty money" means money that is illegally gained, illegally transferred or illegally utilized, especially money gained through forgery, bribery, and theft". Throughout the records full time limit, the New York rapper also makes his presence known, rapping out boastful lyrics in the misc of his conscious lyrics, making it known that although he was gone for five years, he proclaims that he's back to running the game and even shouts out Isabel, calling himself the male Isabel of rap, as all eyes are about to be on him, a clever ode to the pop singing superstars fifth studio album. Production wise, the record is a floor stomping, percussion snapping rap banger that is both captivating as it is catchy. The record doesn't scream pop cross over, but has a true Hip-Hop fire to it that makes it have all the makings of being a floor-filling club banger. Jay-C sounds focus and serious over the record, you can genuinely hear the resilience and robustness in the tone of his rapping flow throughout the records entirety. It's clear that Jay-C is back in full swing for 2017.
