Boyz Will Be Boys

Boyz Will Be Boys is the debut studio album by the afro-american girl group, LUXX (can be pronounced as 'luks', 'luck' or 'luhh') released on March 10th, 2017, by Just Record Records with additional promotion and funding from Dahlhouse Entertainment, a management company currently redefining the powers of management. The group consists of 3 women, Instagram famous Melanie Burnes, backup vocalist Dawn Pope and model Zalika Williams. The trio met through Instagram, becoming good friends on social media after bonding over their love for hair and music. Living on different corners of the country, in 2016 the 3 girls planned a trip together that would change their lives forever. Melanie Burnes posted a 15 second video of themselves harmonizing during this trip and the small clip caught the attention of the talent manager Anniken Dahl-Smith who had previously worked with Dawn Pope. It took some convincing but LUXX had officially began pursuing a music career in August of 2016. It was around this time that they created a SoundCloud account, posting renditions of their favorite songs every few months. In January of 2017, LUXX posted their first original song on SoundCloud, "Blue Boy", and launched a gofundme for their music, confirming that they've been busy working on a debut album with record producers FancyN and DrewWB. On February 5th of 2017, their debut single, "Daddy's Boy" was released by Just Record Records and Dahlhouse Entertainment. The song debuted at #6 on the charts and peaked at #1, critics lauding the song for it's personal themes and strong vocals, while praising it's b-side, "Invincible Boy", even more. This single choice was made only after deciding at the last minute to not release "Nappy Boy", a Contemporary R&B song they assumed would have more success. LUXX's team planned on releasing more singles but after the unexpected #1, the album was released within the following weeks. Critics criticized the decision to rush LUXX's music, saying their management's choice to "strike it while it's hot", a 'tasteless tactic' for what they believe is, "beautiful music that deserves way more attention".

Inspiration behind the album comes straight from the famous 1990's film, Boyz n the Hood, a movie praised for addressing problems that effect the black community greatly. LUXX takes this concept and morphs it into a modern day love story, accidentally on purpose highlighting how when in comparison to a movie made over 20 years ago, the way their community is treated and a lot of the problems they have faced have not improved all that much. The album goes as far to contain samples from the actual film, posing as either intros or outros to many of the tracks featured on the debut album.

The songs all feature writing credits from the girls of LUXX, the tracks all coming straight from their hearts. The theme of the fictional film ties perfectly within the themes of their lives, one of the most interesting feats of the album. Additional writing credits come from famous writers such as Airemese "Coke" Smith, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, and Drew Westbrook, the latter 2 also producing the record alongside the contemporary production duo, Flame 1&2. Together they've put together a 10-track records that vary from Neo Soul to R&B Soul to Alternative R&B and, of course, Contemporary R&B. There are 3 additional songs included on the deluxe edition and Best Buy edition that will not be available time set later in the year.

1. Suspicious Boy
Length: 4:25
Genre: Contemporary R&B, Soul
Written by: Dawn "Poppy" Pope, Melanie Burnes, Airemese "Coke" Smith, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino
Produced by: FancyN, DrewWB

Suspicious Boy is the first track on Boyz Will Be Boys, opening with a contemporary R&B beat consisting of an organ, a pan flute, and a thumping bass, a few tambourines making an appearance during the pre-hook and hook. Though in writing it sounds like a weird combination, the production of FancyN and DrewWB creates a calm, laidback instrumental for the flirty rap-sung track. Written by Dawn "Poppy" Pope, Melanie Burnes, Airemese "Coke" Smith, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, the song is all about falling in love with a black boy who is not only so cute that they claim he, "looks like trouble" but also seems to be trouble. The track is as almost serious as it is flirty, the love song really touching on how hard it is to be a black man in America when it seems most places you go, someone's always suspecting them, mostly because of the color of their skin and the stereotypes that comes along with it. A sample from Boyz in the Hood is used towards the end of the song, ripped directly froma scene in the film where the character Tre Stylez has a bad run-in with a police officer.

We planned on buying snacks but they followed us through the whole store
Just for that, I swiped a snickers, best believe I'll be back for more
You like to rant on brown liquor, everything small seems so bigger
Cry bout how it's you against the world, then link up with all of your niggas

Your squad seems so shady and my girls quick with the shade
We get lit in the bando, that's where matches are made
I feel you looking up my body, I'ma flirt the whole way
Lips looking like a full meal, I plan to dine out today!

Came in looking like a blessing, feeling like a sin
And damn, I just wanna know you all
Where did you come from? What is your purpose?
Let me see your hands, one at a time
Came in looking like a blessing, feeling like a sin
And damn, I just wanna know you all
Where did you come from? What is your purpose?
Why do I feel like letting someone's son ruin my whole life?

Suspicious boy!
You juss look like trouble, you juss look like trouble
You just look like trouble, you just look like trouble

Suspicious boy!
You juss look like trouble, you juss look like trouble
You juss look like trouble, you juss look like trouble

Suspicious boy!

I hold your hand, you always get so jammed when they pull you over
Target on your back and not just because you have a Florida tag in southern Georgia
I record just in case, your voice suddenly loses its base
Why do they get us all tight just to tell us 'have a good day'?

Mind's screaming, "fuck 12!" while simultaneously forcing a smile on our face
We get to dragging that pig, but only after he's walked away
It is what it is, you still got the free crib?
Up to no good, tryna forget the world we live in

[context: Tre Styles just got pulled over by a cop. We all know where this is headed!]

Tre Styles: I didn't do nothing.

Officer Coffey: You think you tough? [pulls gun on Tre] Scared now, ain't you? I like that. That's why I took this job. I hate little motherfuckers like you. Little niggers, you ain't shit! I could blow your head off with this Smith & Wesson and you couldn't do shit. Think you tough? What set you from? Look like one of them Crenshaw mafia motherfuckers.

2. Nosy Boy ft. Deneil
Length: 4:24
Genre: Contemporary R&B
Written by: Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, Deneil Khan, Zulika Williams
Produced by: FancyN

Nosy Boy is the second track on Boyz Will Be Boys, featuring a guest vocal from the London rapper Deneil Khan. The song is written by Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, Zulika Williams and Deneil Khan, Zuli taking the lead for once and singing in patios. Songs like this were important for the group, a chance for Zuli to get more lines on the album as her patios is hard to write into every song, leading her to get far less airtime in the group. The lyrics themselves are about wanting to know everything about someone you love, one of those curiosities being if they love you back. She falls for with a man from London, something Zuli claims she has done over and over again, London being a second home for her and Deneil plays as the man she falls in love with, giving an amazing verse that many consider to be the best part of the song. Even still, Zuli brings another solid Contemporary R&B song to LUXX's debut, a wobbly beat with pacing percussion created by FancyN that softly follows both of the recording artists' voices, creating a huge contrast as both Zuli and Deneil share a huskier tone.

So when mi say love what you say back?
Mi know mi fi know but mi gotta ask
Everybody seen the stories go real bad
Love come and go, cut you off, leave you real sad, real sad
None ah that!
Now that Zuli and her girls guh fi blow up
Everybody looking fah ah come up
Mama say, “if you mash ants you find em guts
Don’t gi dem what dey want, just line dem up”
But it should nah be so hard to learn fi you motive
I'm free for the night, what's the motive?
At first love went unnoticed
You got that magic, someting laka potion

Slow motion, yeah, I’m pon a grind
(on my grind)
Nyum good, work hard, I just want to live right (live right)
Money pon dis rolex, don’t waste my time
Or get back inna de line, backa de line

Boy, you got fi mi heart, don’t bruk it (Don't break it, break it)
Charge fi mi life, mi took it (That's taken, taken)
Wa fi spend de night, let’s book it (A cheap vacation)
Get me an intimate space and ask wey

So when mi say love what you say back?
'Ow you feel, really feel? Mi just gotta ask
Never gave fi mi all but mi cyan do dat
Love come and go, we cyan stop dat, stop dat

Mmmm
London boys, them a problem
You sound ah bit like me, let's talk some
They only know what mi say when mi get mad
But you speak de language, mi like that
I'm nuh cyar about de motive
I'm a free up my nights, what's the motive?
Just nuh wa fi end up broken
You’ll catch some black magic, no shit

Slow motion, a constant grind
(on my grind)
Nyum good, work hard, I just hope I'm living right (living right)
Don’t waste my time

Or get back inna de line, back ah de line

Boy, you got fi mi heart, don’t bruk it (Don't break it, break it)
Charge fi mi life, mi took it (That's taken, taken)
Wa fi spend de night, let’s book it (A cheap vacation)
Get me an intimate space and ask wey

You say you speak my language but we both know it's better in tongues
Why skip to the beat drop when you got this killa rhythm goin' on?
Straight fucking ain't as fun as pulling those strings along
Sheer goddess in my presence so excuse a man for wanting to prolong
I got that secret potion, everlasting effects are guaranteed
The Simpsons type of soothsayer, predicting that future for you and me
Wanna get a little closer, show ya how we do way over in the East
Getting cocky with the playing, ya boy has more front than Brighton Pier
Think that Neily's complex? Gyal, I'm not the only riddle here
What about you? I know your name but I ain't ever heard the story
Tap on the mic, don't let them steal your shine, share your glory
Unleash that fire, don't care if you kill 'em all, gory
Shake my little world with all the things you've never told me
Do you dream of wild nights in LDN? Who do ya think of when ya lonely?
If you got demons and skeletons, fam it's not as if I'm even Holy
I'll tame all your big bad wolves, they'll learn to love me like Mowgli
You're a breath of fresh air in the times that we are living in
Such a strong, proud woman and there is just no stopping it
Arrived without a four min' warning and been straight up killing it
Seems we fit in place like Tetris, both always on that winning shit
Only been around for a hot second and already the most relevant
We destroy all those barriers, we revelling in our melanin
Missing words in our rhymes, still have a higher IQ than Mr President
We murdering them all, can hear the tears and the violin
Every boy is wishing it could be them and you
I know I've messed around but I ain't gon' be making room
Clever with my words but there is three that I just can't do
If I say it out loud...would you say that you do too?

Boy, you got fi mi heart, don’t bruk it (Don't break it, break it)
Charge fi mi life, mi took it (That's taken, taken)
Wa fi spend de night, let’s book it (A cheap vacation)
Get me an intimate space and ask wey

3. Fresh Boy
Length: 2:44
Genre: Alternative R&B
Written by: Dawn "Poppy" Pope, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino
Produced by: DrewWB, Flame 1&2

The third song on the album is Fresh Boy, a mindless track about going to a block party and seducing a bad boy. The title 'Fresh Boy' comes from the fact that this bad boy is fresh out of jail, which none of the girls (except Zuli) seem to care about. In fact, it seems like it's one of the reasons why she wants him so much, her being single making her yearn to be reckless with a reckless guy. One of the more lighthearted tracks on the album, it also contains a sample from the 1990's film, Boyz in the Hood. It was written by Dawn "Poppy" Pope and Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, it's Alternative R&B beat being produced by DrewWB and Flame 1&2.

Tre Styles: I get a discount on clothes, and shit. You like?

Doughboy: Nigga, you look like you selling rocks!

Chris: Yo, Tre' you be slinging that shit?

Tre Styles: No, I don't sell that shit!

Doughboy: You couldn't anyway! Pops will kick yo' ass! You know I'm out the pen. I'm gon' keep my ass out this time.

Tre Styles: That's what we're here to celebrate, right? Damn, brother how did you get so big?

Doughboy: Pumping iron, and eating. Ain't nothing else to do in the motherfucking pen. Three hots, and a cot, know what I'm saying? I was also reading, and writing my girl.

Monster: You read?

Doughboy: Yes, I can read, bitch! I ain't no criminal!

You know I love a block party
Playing everything from DJ Khal' to Bob Marley
It's hotter than wasabi
But I ain't sitting down til I'm sure you saw me
I just knew I'd be sweating out my twist out
I showed up to show out
I'm single now and you fresh out
So wassup?
(Wassup?) You down? (You down?)

Don't start none, won't be none
Fresh white tee, vintage Jay's on
Cruise in his walk, draft in his run
Scars spell out, 'this ain't what you want'

But I just gotta have him...
(You'll only 'ave yourself tah blame!)
Don't start none, won't be none
Everybody showed up to have fun
Cross that line and it's square one
Shouldn't chase that boy if you ain't Babylon

But I just gotta have him...

Flexing
I'm sending you a message
If you're liking my dances
Then baby, come and get it!
You got the sauce and I'm dripping
If you got the free crib then I'm dipping
No one will catch us slipping
This party I won't be missing
I just knew I'd be sweating out my twist out
I showed up to show out
I'm single now and you fresh out
So wassup?
(Wassup?) You down? (You down?)

Don't start none, won't be none

4. Ghetto Boy
Length: 3:14
Genre: Neo Soul
Written by: Melanie Burnes, Airemese "Coke" Smith
Produced by: DrewWB

A quiet song led by Mellie, Ghetto Boy is the fourth track on the album. Written by Melanie Burnes and Airemese "Coke" Smith, LUXX sings the melodic song about a boy from Compton who she dreams of being all hers, even knowing that he'll always be Compton's in the sense that she doesn't believe he'll never stop recklessly in his city for the greater good of their future as a couple. The song is almost like a chant, LUXX harmonizing to the beat of a soft drum and shy keys lingering in the back of the track, all courtesy of DrewWB.

So prideful, in your broken world
Unremorseful, in your broken ways
This cycle, it won't break your chains

LA Boyz, they're a problem
Run off with the sun just when you want them
LA Boyz, they're a problem
Live like ghosts, leave you haunted
LA Boyz, they're a problem
Just turn on the news

Compton was your first love, no one else has even placed
You know where you stand in this world, I still don't know where I place
But somehow someway, my heart will be your home
One day you'll grow old of the ghetto

(Him won't)

So youthful, it's the ultimate excuse
Untruthful, pretend like I don't know how this ends
So hopeful, even knowing you'll never grow old
You'll be forever young, truly

LA Boyz, they're a problem
Run off with the sun just when you want them
LA Boyz, they're a problem
Live like ghosts, leave you haunted
LA Boyz, they're a problem
Just turn on the news

Compton was your first love, no one else has even placed
You know where you stand in this world, I still don't know where I place
But somehow someway, my heart will be your home
One day you'll grow old of the ghetto

5. Invincible Boy
Length: 4:24
Genre: R&B Soul
Written by: Drew Westbrook, Airemese "Coke" Smith, Niña "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, Melanie Burnes
Produced by: DrewWB

Invincible Boy serves as the B-side to LUXX's debut single, Daddy's Boy. Written by Drew Westbrook, Airemese Smith, Niña Tarantino and Melanie Burnes, the song is written to a reckless boy who lives dangerously on the margin. In the R&B/soul song produced solely by Drew Westbrook, the girls sing through some of the different ideologies surrounding the afterlife, warning their lover to not be the one who gets stuck fact checking those beliefs. It contains a sample from the 1990's film, Boyz in the Hood, which plays right before the song begins, tying the themes of the movie and the music together.

Young Tre: You should have blew it off.
Furious Styles: Don't say that. Don't say that. Just would've contributed to the killing of another brother.

Some say this life isn't the last stage
Some say we don't die, we just reincarnate
Heaven and Hell, left to roam the world freely
So many beliefs, it's hard to believe there's just one place
How I'd like to think
The world doesn't exist outside of me
That everyone's here to make a scene
And what I don't react to isn't credible

How I wish that would be
Living without an anchored soul
Maybe then you wouldn't hurt me so
Playing like you're invincible

Maybe the stars in the sky are where souls are left out to dry
Maybe space is the waiting room
Maybe we get to live again but not as man, this time just plants
Waiting to bloom in gloom

Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out

Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out

Some say this life is the end of the road
No promise land, nothing to soothe our heavied souls
How I'd like to think
The world doesn't exist outside of me
That everyone's here to make a scene
And what I don't react to isn't credible

How I wish that would be
Living without an anchored soul
Maybe then you wouldn't hurt me so
Playing like you're invincible

Maybe we all got hustled, it was all one big joke and we suppressed our souls, for absolutely nothing
Maybe we wasted our only chance at happiness by thinking there'd be, something greater waiting

Don't.. fuck.. around..
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out

Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out

Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out
Don't fuck around and find out

6. Skrong Boy
Length: 4:10
Genre: Neo Soul
Written by: Melanie Burnes, Airemese "Coke" Smith, Dawn "Poppy" Pope
Produced by: DrewWB

Skrong Boy is the sixth track on the Boyz Will Be Boys album, produced by DrewWB and written by Melanie Burnes, Airemese "Coke" Smith and Dawn "Poppy" Pope. In yet another song filled with beautiful harmonies, the girls sing a mellow song that encourages their lover to be reckless despite the danger. It's odd how they use such a placid sound for a song of bravery but in the midst of the minimal drum-set, dreamy violins, relaxed cello and light keys, it somehow works.

You ramp with fi you life

I nag you with, "why?"
Mi cry and mi cry
But really, I...

I'd rather die

I'd rather die
Than see
You fall
In line

Sometimes de strongest boyz make de weakest men
So fuck that, tan skrong boy!
Tan strong fah as long as you can..

(OOC: tan strong means stay strong okay back to the song!)

That's what I hate bout this most
It's the only way you'll survive
You fight for the right to live
Drained of all life by 35

You'll become just like the rest
Work away your life with a 9 to 5
Difference is, they got their spring days
You spent yours fighting for a spot in line

I'd rather die
Than see
You fall
In line

So fuck that, tan skrong boy!

7. Nappy Boy
Length: 3:55
Genre: Contemporary R&B
Written by: Dawn "Poppy" Pope, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, Melanie Burnes, Airemese "Coke" Smith, Drew Westbrook
Produced by: Flame 1&2, FancyN, DrewWB

The seventh track on Boyz Will Be Boys, Nappy Boy, was meant to be the lead single for the album before it was scrapped at the last minute and Daddy's Boy took it's place as LUXX's lead single. Written by Dawn "Poppy" Pope, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, Melanie Burnes, Airemese "Coke" Smith and Drew Westbrook, it's single potential is obvious here, the catchy lyrics metaphorically comparing the love between LUXX and their partner to hair, specifically the types that are commonly found among Black and African people. It doesn't help that the production just makes it sounds like a sure fire hit, the hard-hitting beat making it impossible not to dance to. The song doesn't just serve as a love song but also as an anthem of praise for Black hair, all 3 girls taking pride in their natural manes. A comical sample from Boyz in the Hood starts the song off, the girls jumping righting into the track afterwards with soulful vocals and killer harmonies.

Knucklehead #1: And another thing Ferris, When are you gonna get your hair cut? That shit is stripped. It looks like something from 1983, dude.

Ferris: Fuck you Nigga. Ain't nobody cutting my hair, man. I'm like Samson my strength is in my hair.

Knucklehead #1: [To Knucklehead 2] And you Nigga, what's up with that babe you been talking to?

Knucklehead #2: Tsk! Fuck that bitch.

Knucklehead #1: [Laughs]

Ferris: [To Knucklehead 2] Are you scared?

Knucklehead #1: Nah, he's not scared, he's just young.

Ferris: And dumb.

Don't cut your glory!

I'll always be me
There just no one else to my liking
You swear you want me to chase change
But the change you chase is someone else's beauty
That's just not how I'm living
Assimilation ain't the tea
I was born a problem and you're wary
You always seem to forget we're one in the same

Hold your head still
(hold still)
It only hurts when you pull away (don't pull away)
All that's seen isn't even real (it's not real)
Trying to make our love like theirs will only cause you more pain

Don't cut your glory, don't give up on us
What's so wrong with kinks? That's just our type of love
It's an unruly mess, yes, it's all over the place, but make no mistake
If the grass looks that green, it's gotta be fake
Don't hold your ear back, just listen to me
If something's so wrong with naps, why'd god give them to me?
It's an unruly mess, and yet, we still survived
If the grass looks that green, the bill's gotta be high

Quit being tender headed
If you're a man, act like it
Out there you're a force to be reckoned with
Not so invincible when your heart's on the line, are you?
I'll take control
(You wouldn't know what to do with that)
You get so caught up tryna be bad
I can make sure you bounce right back
But you have to stop playing grown and let our love grow

Boyz ah be boys
Swear no luhhh, is all noise
You'll run wey jussa limp right back
That heart of yours you just can't ignore
Woah woah woah!
Don't cut your glory!

If the grass looks that green,
I just know the bill's gotta be high
Don't fall for the hype...

8. Thicc Boy
Length: 3:44
Genre: Bounce, Contemporary R&B, Alternative R&B
Written by: Zulika Williams, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, Dawn "Poppy" Dawn, Drew Westbrook
Produced by: Flame 1&2, inZane

Thicc Boy is the eighth track on the album. Led by Zuli, it is written in patios by Zulika Williams, Nina "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino, Dawn "Poppy" Dawn and Drew Westbrook about challenging a prideful man. LUXX seems to completely switch gears after Nappy Boy, suddenly sounding louder, bolder with a rowdy instrument that sounds like something fresh out of a club mix. The bouncy beat is the work of Flame 1&2, which is accompanied by the voice of Rum lingering in the background, adlibbing to the beat to make it sound even more like something fresh out of the South, a sound group member Poppy is no stranger to.

9. Church Boy
Length: 3:44
Genre: Alternative R&B
Written by: Airemese "Coke" Smith, Dawn "Poppy" Dawn
Produced by: FancyN

Poppy leads the ninth track on Boyz Will Be Boys, slowing things all the way down with a nice song comparing love to church, written by Airemese "Coke" Smith and herself. Accompanying the lyrics, FancyN's Alternative R&B production consists of a calm percussion, heavy synths, a catchy piano riff and even violins that fade in and out of the track. This all comes together to create a peaceful song where LUXX takes a much more tentative approach to convincing the man she loves to love her back.

[context: Everybody's chilling on the porch (I think), minding their business and talking about nothing.]

Chris: I tell y'all where y'all need to go, where they got more women than anywhere. Violence, too.

Monster: Crenshaw, Sunday nights?

Chris: Nope.

Doughboy: Street racers on Florence?

Chris: Y'all way off. I give y'all a hint: everybody's been there.

Monster: Where?

Doughboy: Where, nigga? Spit it out.

Chris: The church.

Doughboy: Aw, shit. Nigga, please! Ain't nobody going to church to catch no bitches! I should roll your ass up off this porch with that stupid shit!!

You've been looking for a place where the love comes free..welp!
They tell you come as you are, but'll be damned if that's how you leave

High and low, far and wide, damn near everywhere
Searched all over, gave up and now you're here
Little do you know, in my arms, there aint much to fear

Love is like church
If you just look around, you'll see a bunch of people who just want to believe

The old assume they do
The young don't know they won't
They're choosey beggars and all they want

Is.. peace
Which they'll find in the loudest song, oddly
A soulful psalm that makes even you weak
And in that moment, you don't have to question anything
You just have to lift your hands

And.. sing

You've been looking for a place where you won't be judged..oh well!
Love is blind and dumb but somehow certain when you're just not enough

High and low, far and wide, damn near everywhere
Searched all over, gave up and now you're here
Lucky for you, in my arms, there aint much to fear

Love is like church
If you just look around, you'll see a bunch of people who just want to believe
The old assume they do
The young don't know they won't
They're choosey beggars and all they want

Track: Daddy's Boy
Artist: LUXX
Genre: R&B Ballad
Label: Just Record Records
Written by: Dawn "Poppy" Pope, Niña "Rum/FancyN" Tarantino
Produced by: FancyN, DrewWB
Length: 5:53

Daddy's Boy is a song recorded by the African-American girl group, LUXX (can be pronounced as 'luks', 'luck' or 'luhh'), which consists of 3 black women, Mellie, Poppy, and Zuli. It serves as the A-side to their debut single which will be impacting radio on February 5th, 2017. Daddy's Boy is a track from their debut album, "Boyz Will Be Boys", which is expecting a first quarter release from Just Record Records. The R&B ballad was written by Dawn Pope and Nina Tarantino, and was produced by the latter with help from Drew Westbrook. On the surface, the song is written about a man who the girls claim is incapable to commit due to the abandonment he's suffered from his father. It's deeper meaning touches on issues within the black community, specifically single parent homes, a topic close to Dawn Pope who wrote the first verse about her father being murdered months before she was born. This ties within the underlying theme of LUXX's entire project, Boyz Will Be Boys, an album based on the infamous 1990's film, Boyz n the Hood, a movie praised for addressing problems that effect the black community greatly. LUXX takes this concept and morphs it into a modern day love story, accidently on purpose highlighting how when in comparison to a movie made over 20 years ago, the way their community is treated and a lot of the problems they have faced have not improved all that much.

Dead or alive?
Did a wanted poster catch up with him for the last time?
Do you even know who he is?
We grow up just fine
Sometimes mama couldn't pay the bills on time
But it is what it is
Sometimes I thank God he's dead
You had to live with abandonment
I lucked out and got to pretend
Even if he was never mom's
Even if I know that means he was never mine's
Who's gonna argue the dead wasn't a good man?

Round and round we go
Carousels left idle, but the cycle goes on
The last thing I want
Is to cry over a man, who woulda been a no show

But girls will be girls

Dead or afraid?
I could've sworn they were the same damn thang
Neither seem to let you live
Feels like I'm glued in place
Another bird singing in your pretty cage
Something's got to give
You're mad at my words cause you're really trying
I know it and I'm damn near crying
Who you wanna be never defeats who you are
Especially when it's all you know
Especially when you're all you've got
And especially when who you are fools you to think so

Round and round we go
Carousels left idle, but the cycle goes on
The last thing you want
Is to take after a man, you didn't even know
But Boyz will be boys

Cause they.. they don't know how to be anything else
They never learned how to be anything else, nothing else
Boyz will be boys because they can't be men
They just can't be men
And girls will be girls, they'll love em to the end of this world
Cherish their broken pearls, but never break them out that shell

Round and round we go
Carousels left idle, but the cycle goes on
The last thing I need
Is for you to let your fear of abandonment, abandon me

But Boyz ah be boys

Erich: there is loads of truth here. Mainly in the fact churches are crawling with women. And BBQ ribs. What more could you want?
I think it's that whole "Adams rib thing". Ribs and women just go hand in hand.

Karoliena: yes,as a rule most women have ribs.

Deneil: This album is well bangin', innit? Glad to have been part of it. Love working with true artists with a unique sound and vision. Makes collaborating and sharing ideas much more interesting and we really got to create something special without having to stay within certain goal posts. When you aren't chasing radio hits, the things you can create can be magical, fam. Grateful that you let me be part of this project.

OOC: Meant to comment on this a while ago but things piled up and it slipped my mind. I promise I read it all when it was first posted. This isn't just a throwaway comment lol. I really enjoy this group. Very different take on girl groups and they really stand out on here not only for their music but their personalities and unique style. The patois is a nice touch too even if I do feel like a moron just learning to read when I try to decipher some of it LOL. I think that this is a great body of work but the standout tracks for me are "Nosy Boy" (thanks for letting me be part of it!), Suspicious Boy and Daddy's Boy! :)
