Single: Now You See Me Artist: Coke Label: Studio60 Records, Dahlhouse Entertainment Release Date: May 21st, 2017 Genre: PBR&B, Alt-Dance Written by: Airemese Smith Produced by: DrewWB Length: 4:36Now You See Me is a song recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Coke from her sophomore studio album, GOLD. The song serves as the lead single from the album, seeking to impact radio on May 21st, 2017 by Studio60 Records with additional promotion by Dahlhouse Entertainment. Written solely by Airemese Smith, the production is handled by DrewWB. Released May 20th, 2017 for digital download, Now You See Me is a midtempo track that fuses neo-soul, indie pop and electro-R&B together to make a PBR&B track. Providing a much lighter PBR&B sound than what listeners might be used to from Coke's efforts in the PBR&B duo, Rum & Coke, the singer once again setting herself apart and giving her solo music it's own identity. Lyrically, Coke writes about depression and sharing the spotlight with her flaws despite her efforts to hide them. Written, recorded and produced in early April of 2017, Now You See Me is one of the later tracks recorded for GOLD. Initially, the project was only intended to serve as the re-release of the singer's debut album Dans Ta Tête but as the project further developed and the lyrics dug deeper, Coke decided they deserved to be on their own full length record. Now You See Me was written well after this decision. It was meant to be the lead single from the start, Coke wanting a track that was broader and less emotional than the others to promote heavily. The song is composed by Coke, the first versions of the track being recorded as an acapella. Drew Westbrook ended up being who Coke chose to handle the track's production, completely building the instrumental around her vocals. She was pleased with his work so much that she assigned the New York born producer as the executive producer of GOLD. In an April interview with Cara Zayn, Coke confirmed that she would be releasing new music soon and in May, Coke filmed a video for the single and released a behind the scenes video that included teasers and further information about the single. Now You See Me is an midtempo PBR&B track that incorporates elements of Alt-Dance and has a length of four minutes and thirty six seconds. Though it's not exactly uptempo, it has the kind of beat that makes it perfect to dance to. With a motor driven synth that hums through the track, it has an riveting instrumental full of claps, snaps, an electronic hi-tat, ricocheting 808 and even a soft xylophone. The song is one of Coke's more laid-back tracks, her vocal delivery depending a lot more on her dreamy layered falsettos.
Coke It's getting hard to smile, don't look at me now Keeps me up at night, always got me down So much going on in my life but I feel empty, how? I just can't keep up, my head's spinning 'round
Dont you just feel like you wanna die? Push yourself away to get a look on the inside Watching faces blur, praying time passes by Spent hours in the mirror, now I'm hiding from the light
How come no one ever says, "be the woman you have to be"? I clip my own wings, wouldn't know what to do with free Trying to turn my hate for everything into positive energy Nothing ever seems to work... fuck! Now you see me
You take a chance every time you take a glance Wrestling with the spotlight is my favorite dance Hold your applause I suggest you don't, regress your wants, change your stance I fear I'm a lost cause but what's the plan, Stan? Should I try again?
Don't you just feel like there's a better way to live? If we're all just gonna be reborn, what gives? Witness the roof turn into a plank, wondering, "what if?" Spent hours in the mirror, saw the truth and hid
How come no one ever says, "be the woman you have to be"? I clip my own wings, wouldn't know what to do with free Trying to turn my hate for everything into positive energy Nothing ever seems to work... fuck! Now you see me
Nothing ever seems to work, I just get back to work It only ever seems to hurt but I just put in more work Would change the man in the mirror but fuck, that's way too much work Stand by my flaws, strut to the applause, long as they stare in awe, I'ma work Work, work, work, work Work, work, work, work
How come no one ever says, "be the woman you have to be"? I clip my own wings, wouldn't know what to do with free Trying to turn my hate for everything into positive energy Nothing ever seems to work... fuck! Now you see me
