Some Kind of Planet Live at The Focus Temple Brooklyn, NY 3/30/18

As the band finishes setting up, they walk back into the green room for a few minutes, creating tension as the lights dim inside the venue. The venue has only been open for two months but it already has a very positive reputation for hosting top quality shows for local bands. Tonight, that headlining band is Some Kind of Planet and 100 people have come out to the 250 capacity venue to see them. As the music playing over the PA fades out, the three piece walks out on stage. Frontman and guitarist, Noel Houston, turns on his amp shortly after tuning. He plays a couple open strings as he adjusts his amp to his liking. He walks up to the mic. "Hey, what's up? We're Some Kind of Planet." He says as he starts playing the chord progression to one of their new singles, Hard Not to Care. The song is slow, almost like a dirge. Their playing style revolves around subdued playing, Noel's voice stays somber and soft through the whole song. In some parts when the volume crescendos, they get more and more into it. Finally Noel hits the last chord of the song, letting it ring.

The crowd cheers as the band's finishing note fades out. "Thanks guys." Noel turns on a heavy delay pedal. "Can I get more guitar in my monitor?" He starts strumming as the sound guy turns up the guitar. "Cool that's good, thank you." He crouches down to grab a beer, taking a drink. "Give it up for the last two bands, they're awesome. We've played with both bands before. This next song is called Sun Organ." The band picks up the pace with a faster song, clocking in at about 170 bpm. The song is quite hypnotic, the bassline remains consistent throughout the song. The band is absolutely locked in with each other, they take queues from each other, and they bounce off energy from each other. The chorus consists of call and response vocals from the bassist, Garman Pitcher, and Noel. The song is an intense seven minute jam, Noel utilizing a wide variety of pedals to make his long guitar solo more intense. Finally, the song resolves into the ending, which is just Noel using heavy guitar feedback.

"Thank you." He says, breathing heavily as the crowd cheers. "We're going on tour in a few weeks. You should tell your friends." He starts to play a much slower riff, using a reverb and a tremolo pedal to create a very light headed, airy feeling to the song. Soon the bass joins in, playing a riff that acts as a pickup every two measures. Soon, the drums join in, hitting the cymbals loudly to give the song much more emotion. The song is much shorter than the other two, but they use the tension of that song to go straight into their forth song. A faster song with a driving guitar chord progression, followed by call and response vocals between Noel and Garman. The drummer, Marshall Turner, keeps the time with simultaneous ride cymbal and snare hits. The song builds up as much tension as possible so they can end it abruptly with a dampened cymbal hit.

The crowd cheers, many people in the audience sweating and breathing heavily from dancing to that song. "We've got one more for y'all, make sure you see us at Baby's All Right on the 12th for our tour kick off." He pauses, taking a swig of beer. "That's Garman on bass and Marshall on drums, everyone give it up for them." As he talks, they start playing their fifth song. The song is also quite limber and relaxed, Noel sings softly as his guitar plays dreamy chord progressions soaked in reverb. Noel puts his microphone to the amp, making it much loader as the band explodes in energy and volume. Noel turns on several of his pedals to create a wall of sound during his solo. The drums and bass drop out, leaving Noel who lets his guitar get caught in a feedback loop as he plays with a heavily delay, changing the speed quickly, letting the noise build up until the feedback fades out as the crowd cheers. The lights brighten as he stands up and the crowd keeps cheering. "Thanks, we're Some Kind of Planet. We have shirts, buttons, and stickers for sale. Come by the merch booth and say hi to us, you guys rule." They start tearing down as the PA starts playing music again.
