What with the end of the year a bit over or under two months away and everyone looking back with a sense of bewilderment and dizzy exhaustion at the past decade, it's starting to get towards the time when people are beginning to take stock of everything that has happened and figure out just what the hell was good and what was bad; what was band wagon jumping and what was a subversive gem. Yep, it's time to take stock and figure out what have been the musical highlights of the 2000's (I hate the term Naughties).

The rise of manufactured pop and talent show fodder has been unstoppable, the mostly vapid pop pap a rising tide in the singles and albums charts. A few musical movements with outsider cred have grown and shrunk, been adopted by the mainstream and sanitised before mutating into new forms. Some things that have meant to change the world have massively under achieved, while others have been surprise successes. Old bands have carried on with varying degrees of success, while within ten eyars already the bands that were young and vibrant at the start of teh decade have already become regarded by some as contempoorary dinosaurs. It's been an exciting and vibrant time, as well as a era of signifiacant change in terms of how people consume and find their music.

Just recently, Uncut Magazine in the U.K. have published their 150th issue and come up with a list of the 150 best albums of the past decade in music. I'm yet to have a look at the whole list yet, but the Top 25 has been made available and I'm curious to see what people make of it. I look forward to hearing what people make of it and seeing how it compares to lists in other music papers.

#25 = Kid A by Radiohead
#24 = Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys
#23 = Out of Season by Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man
#22 = Think Tank by Blur
#21 = Ys by Joanna Newsom
#20 = Back to Black by Amy Winehouse
#19 = The Rising by Bruce Springsteen
#18 = Aerial by Kate Bush
#17 = Elephant by The White Stripes
#16 = Sound of Silver by LCD Sound System
#15 = In Rainbows by Radiohead
#14 = XTRMNTR by Primal Scream
#13 = Time (The Revelator) by Gillian Welch
#12 = Third by Portishead
#11 = Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips
#10 = Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
#9 = Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams
#8 = Modern Times by Bob Dylan

It's Not all that bad, although i think there's a lot of amazing albums missing from the list.
Glad Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker and Bruce Springsteen - The Rising are on the list.

Those are the only ones I've even heard.

And well, OK. I'm not massively keen on In Rainbows OR Kid A, Fleet Foxes are terribly dull, and well, White Blood Cells is nice enough, has a few good singles on it, but totally over-rated here. Actually as far as White Stripes albums go I'd say that IF you HAD to include one of their records in the list it should probably be either White Blood Cells or Get Behind Satan. But they'd both be down pretty low.

The only one of those records that would even get close to gracing my own top 25 would be Smile by Brian Wilson which is just a fucking beautiful pop record.

Of course the positive of the list is that it's meant to inspire us to come up with our own top 10 or top 25, whatever, from the past decade, not just come out with glib "BAH! SHIT!" I'm sure the readers of Uncut appreciate it, it's clearly aimed at British, indie fans, probably older indie fans as well, while being a bit less retro than Mojo.

So aye, rather than just moan, why not think about your own top 10? It'll take some time to do it justice it deserves of course. Bloody hard, I've heard a lot of good albums this decade. And I'm still trying to work on a top 100 of the 90s :-\

The last ten years were okay, I guess. Nothing beats the 80s. But anyway, my favorite records of the last decade were;

PAGAN ALTAR - The Lords Of Hypocrisy
PAGAN ALTAR - Mythical & Magical
CANDLEMASS - Candlemass
BROCAS HELM - Defender Of The Crown
SABBAT - Satanasword
KISS - Sonic Boom
PRAYING MANTIS - Nowhere To Hide
ARGHOSLENT - Hornets Of The Pogrom
THE LAMP OF THOTH - Portents, Omens & Doom
WARNING - Watching From A Distance
IRONSWORD - Return Of The Warrior

Something like this.

You've got a few good albums there, but I wouldn't consider any of them to be stand out records of the decade... by a long shot. I'm not even going to begin compiling a list until the decade has actually passed..

I'm not talking about best albums sales-wise, cuz then only like 3 albums would stay. I'm talking about talent and good sound. I dunno what you would add, but I think these are the most talented, good-sounding records released. Some artists are very talented like An Endless Sporadic or DragonForce, but their songs suck. Or there are bands that are good sounding, but very little effort and talent is in it, like the The Verve and most Coldplay songs.

That's more like your opinion rather than how the list should be. I doubt any of those would even make a top 50 list for the past decade. I don't believe anyone in their right mind would include a soundtrack or a compilation album on their list much less a soundtrack for a terrible film.

Well yeah, some of these albums are in my opinion great albums, but I disagree with your statement that none of these would great the top 50. Hot Fuss was a very well-received album from critics around the world. Death Magnetic was a much-awaited follow-up to St. Anger, so it was met with much delight. Hybrid Theory is the second-best selling album of the decade, second only to a Beatles compilation. Meteora is the 7th best-selling of the decade. A Rush of Blood To The Head is Coldplay's best selling album of all time. Even though Viva is catchin' up fast, AROBTTH will still be hard to beat. Only By the Night is a big breakthough for Kings of Leon, so it will obviously be an album with much interest. A Beautfiul Lie might be in question, but it has a chance of making it because of the talented actor/musician Jared Leto is the frontman, who at the time of the album's release, was at the top of his acting AND musical career. As for the rest, they still have a chance of making it on the chart, but they prolly won't make it in the top 50 as you said.

Woo, an Oasis fan :)

Also, Wintersleeps 'Wintersleep' should be in it, though no ones probably heard of that. Still, also Foo Fighters 'One By One' should be in it, Regina Spektors past three albums should be in it, The Maccabees 'Wall of Arms' and Coheed and Cambria's 'Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV', but that's just my opinion. Oh and Dizzee Rascal's Boy In Da Corner should be in it.

I can't stand Oasis, although i do like Noel Gallagher's acoustic performance The Dreams We Have As Children.

No it isn't. It's the same.

Also, all these lists are all well and good, but I disagree with all of them. My list of the top 25 of the decade, which is scarily enough just about to end would probably be filled with shit people have never heard of, which makes it pointless for anyone to read it.

One thing's for sure, Old Man Gloom's Seminar III takes the top spot.
