Background and Composition
It has been almost three years since the release of Tisha Jackson’s critically acclaimed album FOR DREW. With a release date of 2017 the album still sits in the Top 20 of the Chart Heat Album Chart as we enter 2020. Jackson, now a resident of Miami, Florida has been relatively quiet for the past three years since the release of FOR DREW. Although the album has sold 5 million copies worldwide the album received no promo outside of Jackson’s headline of the Superbowl and a highly publicized Oprah Winfrey interview on 60 Minutes. Many of Jackson’s fans protested the album receiving no promotion and petitions were signed for Jackson to go out and promote the record, but to no avail. Now three years later long gone are the days where Jackson’s tabloid headlines were just as popular as her music, she has signed a new deal with SONY MUSIC GROUP under her own imprint, Hit Factory Productions, and is rumored to have a new album due anytime now. Jackson has been low key about her new music, which have led many fans to wonder when will her next album be released? Well Christmas may have come a little late this year for her fans but it's right on time with the release of Jackson’s new single, “New Wave Length”. “ New Wave Length” strays away from the R&B heavy FOR DREW. Jackson, known as a pop artist is recognized for infusing many different genres into a body of work. The wait is over. The Princess of Pop is back.
“New Wave Length” was recorded in November of 2019 in Miami, Florida at famous South Beach Studios. Jackson who went through a very public breakup in 2017 didn’t want to record anything “sad” or “reminiscent” of her past relationship with Drew Westrook. She dedicated an entire album to him and told producer Max Martin, “I don’t want to do anything that is like the last album. I am a new person now. My life has changed drastically in the past two years and I want my music to represent that. I want to do something that is a declaration of me being back, but not as in a comeback, and me beginning a new chapter, but nothing overly dramatic. I just wanna have fun.” Jackson who had written the song in April played along with beats with Martin. Originally the song has more of a reggae feel and Jackson opted to infuse more electronic tones in the record.
“New Wave Length” begins as a ballad with Jackson singing very slowly in the beginning about having a “brand new vibe” and “era”. Jackson’s soprano enters in subtly and the beat is very slow, still dancy, but not giving the pace of the song away. Jackson’s vocals continue to slow down and then BOOM. The beat drops! As the beat drops to a fast paced piano strings synthesized drums. Jackson exits the intro and then heads to the hook of the song. The beat strings of piano continue as do the drums as Jackson enters the pre-chorus well into the chorus. Jackson uses her vocals to mimic the beat. Everything is a constant build up. Jackson’s soprano is easy and smooth and she saves her belting for her adlibs. Every hook, every chorus, and every verse ends with heavy belting on her adlibs. Jackson and Martin give a nod to UK Garage house music with the beat while staying true to dance music. The song is in 4 time and is originally in the key of A minor, with a tempo of 122 beats per minute. The refrain is based on an Am–G–F–Am–G–F–C–Dm–Am–C chord progression, while the verses follow an A(add2)–F(add2)–G(add2) sequence. Grande's vocal range spans from G3 to G5. Jackson gave a listening of the song to Rolling Stone magazine and they called it “A vocal progression for Jackson that sets her apart from many of her peers that is a song of triumph. This song is the essence of a phoenix rising.” The wait is over. The Princess of Pop is back.
