Ok so i've been writing some music for the past few months. As I said before I am planning to record some music for my demo. BUT, I didn't think to record music it wold be so freaking expensive. $755.00 dollars to record, I get up to 12 hours to record 3 songs. I wanted to do 5 but that will be to much work (it is impossible to record 5 songs in 12 hours). The only good thing is that they help me mix and master everything so I don't have to worry about that. Then $15 to submit my demo. oh and that's cheap, because the three songs I'm doing do not require much instruments. After meeting with my engineer last week me and him came up with the "budget". I will have to spend over $1,157.00 dollars to record the three songs I wanted. I said freak it I am not spending that much to record a demo.
Anyone else working on music. And if you are, have you worked on a demo, and how much did you spend on making one?

I've not made a demo tape of my own, but I've paid for an album recording. It cost me £530 (around $1,000ish) for recording and mastering of 15 songs. I got to feature on the album as a guest vocalist and "executive producer", and the cost of every CD purchased, until the full £530 is paid back, goes into my pocket. Sweet deal. (: |

A couple of summers ago a buddy and I made a two song demo for about 100 euros, at some cultural center where they also had a studio. The sound was pretty good, and the songs were kinda cool too. Too bad I can't find the master CDr anymore...
I also have a box of tapes with rehearsal recordings, rough versions of songs, and ideas for riffs and solos stashed somewhere in my folks' attic. All were recorded on my late grandfather's old Philips portable tapedeck. They sounded awesome, heavy as fuck!

If you can't find the recording, you know the studio is suppose to have a rough copy of it. (That's how songs get leaked)

Look for slightly lower quality studios like my band does :)
We're paying £108 for 6 hours to record a song next month (around $216) It's all depending on time, quality etc |

For a DEMO, you can do yourself quite cheap. I'll advise properly tomorrow, when I'm a tad more in the sober mindset to advise |

Depending where you are, you might be able to find a college that does recording courses, they're always looking for people to record for free. I mean, a recording is only going to be as good as what you put in, so unless you have a band, or some kind of producer who's writing the music, that's a lot of money to spend. |

For $2500 you should be able to find some cheap recording equipment that you could buy with the only downside being that you would have to do it yourself, but then you could keep the stuff and make more and more afterword there for being more bang for your buck. |

Self recording's always the way to go. Especially if you/your band has absolutely NO CHANCE of getting signed, like mine did. |

Cheaper than that. Realistically speaking, if it's just voice recording, an okay mic at $100, an interface at $100, pair of decent headphones for $50, cables, a mic stand, and a pop filter for another $50 or so. Problem then is having the expertise to get good results with the equipment. But again, unless you really have all the musicians and stuff, and know what you're doing, going into a studio you're not going to get much bang for your buck. |

Thank you so much for the tips guys!! I wanted to do that at first but I'm too scared to do it. I can get musicians to record with me, the problem is that, they are older family members who I really don't talk to. I don't know how that would work. Btu this is probably what I am going to end up doing. Thanks!

A close family friend of mine owns a studio so I can record for free.Right now my band is working on a demo and I myself am working on 2. My bands Prog Metal and my album is going to be prog metal but less Opeth and more Tool and lighter rock. Then the other one is like Soft rock/rap which is something I usually wouldn't do but the songs only sound right that way. |

Don't listen to me I'm just kinda moody today, I actually will be posting my stuff on myspace. Youtube is a fail unless you are famous or have like thousands of subscribers. Also I am not doing this for fame, I'm doing this to see how far I can go as a recording artist and for my demo because I also want to get signed to a small record label in Orlando called "Phantom City" that way I won't have to pay to record during my contract with them. That will be my chance to really record a full length album. I am also on my own, I don't have a band to back me up. So that's why I've been getting ready the past few months. But most definitely looking to get myself out there once I record something. You gotta start from the bottom. Also the good thing about me is that I can dance and that is a plus in the Pop industry. But I hate the stereotype that a dancer cannot sing. Edited by user 02 November 2009 08:26:10(UTC)
