Actually, a label contract dictates that it will agree to fund the budget for the album, but it's necessary that the artist has to pay it back in entirety over time. So you need to be careful with what your spending and have a good safety net for yourself.

Oh most definitively, that's why you have to take a long time to look at your contract. Luckily Phantom City gets a percentage of what you make, so if you don't sell they don't get nothing.

Also they are not an actual label, they help you get signed, but they mimic a label's guidelines.

So they're a promoter? Always good to get as much promotion as possible, in my experience.

No, I heard that part of their contract is if you don't sell anything you automatically get dropped. That's it.

It's not always about being signed some people just want to have an album, it's not that uncommon

No, the reason why they never got signed would of been because they probably weren't very good, being a bunch of teenagers who lacked marketable faces of The Jonas Brothers for example.

Besides, there's plenty examples of bands self-recording, getting signed and even being moderately successful. But anyway, really, only dickheads get into bands with the dream of getting signed and becoming famous. It should simply about playing music for the fun of it.
