"Valeur" is the fourth single released by Pop group The Jollies on September 21st 2020, taken off their debut album 'Squad Goals' under the Five Pesky Kids record label. The song was produced by ex Titan Den Walnut and Claire Becker and co-written by the whole group and Claire Becker.
The song was one of the tracks recorded in the beginning of 2020, after the group decided to continue and carry on without Cj Frankson and it was mainly written by the four Rose, Zafari, David and Natasha. The theme of the song is clear and easy to get being another empowering song, this time with a more 'in your face' type of attitude. Zafari and David in fact gave the biggest contribute to the song with their most outspoken and loud personalities.
The main aim of the lyrics is to give power to people and their individual value, through the good and the bad. As stated in the song, everyone is different for a good reason and the world is perfect and balanced because everyone gives something different, which is also the main message the group always wanted to give ever since their beginning.
The most interesting part of the song is the musical and technical part though. The instrumentation sounds interesting with trumpets shining among the vocals and a whole dancey beat keeping the rhythm of the song strong and alive, almost sounding like an 80s' type of song, very close to the Disco music. The guys still remain in the pure Pop area despite the influences and try to give the most catchy, uplifting sound.
David opens the song with a breathy, deep voice, you can tell he keeps a certain rhythm and vibe to it, which is almost the trademark of his vocals with personality as he plays on a three-way notes melody with his vocal. He only introduces the song and the beat which is the main protagonist this time, well led by all five.
Rose manages to serve as usual a pleasing tone for the first part of the song, she sure knows how to keep a listener interested. Natasha follows her in it able to manage tension in her different higher notes. Zafari and Fabriano here sing the same lines, with the only difference that Fabriano is deeper and lower so he takes the middle 8 part to give that tiny break off the powerful beat of this dancey song.
On the chorus part, the group sounds very cohesive with the notes and harmonies, with the usual differences in tones and scales but mostly on the same note patterns giving more importance to the melody of the trumpets in the background, which gives the most in the instrumental break after the first and second chorus.
The single version differs from the album track for the harmonies that Zafari and Fabriano make to each other's verses, for the strong empowering ad-libs sung by Natasha with her powerful voice at the end and a longer intro build-up melody and longer outro ending with one more repeated chorus.
The song was also performed at the 7th edition of the Fan Choice Awards on August 30th. The group performed in front of billions of watchers and started their performance with their message as David wears the 'Loud and Proud' quote on the back of his jacket with a rainbow peace flag, not only showing support and giving a tribute to the LGBT community where he's highly involved, but also to spread light on equality and throw another brick in the wall at racism and any type of discrimination, which is the constant social fight that the group does for the community with their music. Natasha in fact also appeared wearing men clothes on both the red carpet and during the performance, which is a feminist message meaning that women and men are equal.
The video of the song released on TheJOLLiESvevo, youtube channel of the group, a week before the release of the single, shows the fun and colorful side of the group. It starts with a trumpetist in the shadow playing a sad tune alone in the darkness, which is a hint of the dark times that the world has been living in 2020. When he starts playing, suddenly light comes out, the song plays and the five Jollies appear wearing superhero suits in a Power Rangers style and sing along to the song while the video shows different sides of the world in the dark falling into the light as the song goes on.
The five divide to travel to different cities and they all appear in famous cities like New York, Paris, London, Rome, Dubai and many others. When they appear with the music, you can see people coming out of hidden dark places, looking from windows or from TVs looking scared and uncertain, but the beat and the melody gives them hope, just like the music would do when you feel hopeless.
The more the song continues, the more fireworks appear, trumpetists with trumpets made of a bright light play in the street. People seem to still keep distance from each other, but the light and the music seems to bring them together even if apart.
Everyone dances while group and individual shots of the five super heroes Jollies are shown every now and then in front of a blue sky, symbol of morning and the day after the dark night. The video eventually ends with a huge firework in the sky, everyone looking and in the same sky a quote appears...
"Are you showing your valeur? Light always comes after dark"
